The Australians were taken with the lavish new Beausejour stadium in St Lucia, but perhaps not as impressed as the St Lucians must have been with Australia's 22-year-old batting prodigy Michael Clarke. In his first full international outing of the tour, Clarke, a former Australian Under- 19 captain, stroked a composed unbeaten 75 from 100 balls to lift his team to a daunting 258. And then, each time West Indies looked on track, Clarke hung on to crucial outfield catches. The third and last dismissed Samuels, and signalled a limp end to any serious run-chase. Despite Clarke's success, he was, said Ponting, far from commanding a permanent place in the Australian one-day side.
