At St George's, Grenada, May 19, 2004. West Indies won by seven wickets. Toss: Bangladesh.
One-day international debut: Faisal Hossain.
Devon Smith, dropped and then injured since his last one-day international a year earlier, was
given a golden opportunity on his return: chasing 119 in 25 overs against the Bangladeshi attack
- and his unbeaten 39 guided West Indies home with five balls to spare. After rain again reduced
the match to a 25-over affair (weather interfering for the sixth time in the last ten one-day
internationals in the Caribbean), Habibul Bashar hit 42 to give Bangladesh hope of a competitive
total. But Dwayne Smith removed him and two others, and Bangladesh's 118 was well within
reach. Devon Smith, the first Grenadian to play for West Indies in his home country, rewarded
the diehard spectators who braved predictions of a complete washout. This was the first West
Indies whitewash in a home one-day series since South Africa's first visit to the Caribbean in
1991-92.
Man of the Match: D. S. Smith. Man of the Series: D. R. Smith.
