Retired senior civil servant Selwyn Smith has been retained by the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) as a consultant with responsibility for the day-today management of the office. The appointment of Smith, a former permanent secretary in the Ministry of the Civil Service, will be on a short-term basis.
It is an interim measure until the BCA finalises the appointment of its first ever chief executive officer.
In a letter to BCA members, new president Stephen Alleyne said the appointment of Smith did not replace any of the current staff, but sought to strengthen present operations.
'Mr. Smith is an experienced manager with a record of achievement in both the private and public sectors,' Alleyne told members in his letter dated August 25.
'He planned and co-ordinated our Clubs Forum in April of this year and the board welcomes his deepening involvement in our plans.
'The consultancy will help us streamline the operations of the association, allow us to develop a work plan based on the Shorey Report and the Clubs Forum as well as begin implementation of some of our priority projects.'
Alleyne said the board had finalised the terms, conditions and mandate for the appointment of the chief executive officer to run the association on a full-time basis.
'The board will advertise shortly for applicants for this position which we expect to play a vital role in the reorganisation of our administrative operations and hope to have the post filled as soon as possible.'
Alleyne informed members that in pursuance of the decision made at the recent annual general meeting, the board had appointed a lottery committee to investigate and make recommendations on the matter of the establishment of a lottery to bring revenue to the association.
'The mandate of the committee is to review all matters relevant to the creation of a lottery for the benefit of the association and to make appropriate recommendations to the board which will in turn revert to the general body for final approval,' Alleyne said.
The committee is chaired by Algy Symmonds and includes Grantley Cumberbatch, Stephen Farmer, Elvin Sealy and Vernon Williams.
