Nepal Men's Cricket Team History
Cricket was first introduced to Nepal in the early 20th century by the ruling Rana clan. In 1946, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN); it became an Associate member of the ICC in 1996. The board was suspended by the ICC in 2016 on grounds of government interference, and the suspension was lifted only three years later.
While Nepal were competitive in the Under-19 level from the 2000s onwards, at the senior level, their first big break came when they qualified for the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2014. In their first World Cup game (which was their first T20I), they beat Hong Kong by 80 runs. They also beat Afghanistan at the tournament. Since then, Nepal have been a rising force in Associate cricket. They also gained ODI status for the first time in 2018.
They had a golden run in 2023 when they secured their position at the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier after finishing third on the CWC League 2 table and also qualified for their first Asia Cup by winning the ACC Men's Premier Cup. They then wrapped up the year by making it to the T20 World Cup 2024 for the first time in a decade.
