Super Kings' path to the playoffs

Chennai Super Kings have made it to the playoffs, with a little help from their friends
202

Chennai Super Kings have made it to the playoffs, with a little help from their friends. Since their 16th and final league game on Thursday, a defeat to Kings XI Punjab, Super Kings’ fate depended on three other results. Here’s what happened to allow Super Kings to make it with 17 points:

Deccan Chargers v Rajasthan Royals, Hyderabad - Chargers won by five wickets
Royals, with 14 points, needed to win both their remaining games to qualify, but limped out of the tournament following a meek batting performance. Super Kings had their first lifeline.

Kings XI Punjab v Delhi Daredevils, Dharamsala – Daredevils won by six wickets
Kings XI had 16 points going into their final league game. A win would have taken them past Super Kings. Kings XI couldn’t post a challenging score against the table-toppers and stumbled out. Super Kings had two out of three.

Deccan Chargers v Royal Challengers Bangalore, Hyderabad – Chargers won by nine runs
Super Kings’ campaign looked all but over when Royal Challengers were set to chase a middling 133. Royal Challengers’ batsmen, however, imploded against the fiery Dale Steyn, and Super Kings were through in fourth place, edging out Royal Challengers on net run-rate.

Yes CSK did not play to their potential in some of their matches thats y they in 4th position. else they should have been in top 2.. fate is csk have to play one more match to play final because of that... I can say to other team fans.. Please Dont get afraid of CSK, and comment dhoni is lucky or, without talent with just luck one can not stay long.. and CSK points with net run rate is the proof of the same... so , all the best CSK to rock again.........

I seriously dont understand why everyone are saying tht CSK made it with their Luck. Think this way, all the other team also had 16 matches to play and make to play offs. Every other team had their fate in their own hands to do well and get past CSK. When they couldnt cross the finish line, why should you write off CSK with their Luck? They played 16 games, won 8 of it and had 1 match with no result. RCB had the same stats. But its the runs that were conceded by the team and runs scored by the team made the difference. So please dont talk about Luck and respect that CSK moved to play offs as they were better against either the other teams or played better than other teams during the league.

  • IplIsIndian on May 21, 2012, 17:16 GMT

Yes. CSK is in play-offs as other teams failed to match their points and net run rate. CSK did not stop RR, RCB or KXIP from winning their matches. Infact, these three teams knew what they had to achieve to get into the play-offs. Can't say CSK is lucky. You can say that CSK was lucky only if the place in play-off was determined by draw of lots or toss of a coin. CSK climbed to 4th spot when it mattered and stayed there. None of the team was able to get better than CSK was, it's not their fault. CSK are big match players and they will win 3 matches in a row and become 3rd time champions. CSK bashers, go and get a life. Champions are always envied upon by rivals. CSK will always be always CSK, other teams can only aspire to be CSK but they can't.

  • Debansu on May 21, 2012, 16:34 GMT

CSK was lucky and how is that justified... CSK was infact at a greater disadvantage because they finished their set of matches when other competing teams had 2 matches left. Agreed CSK played badly but others played worse as they could not win when they knew all they needed was to win their matches. Don't forget Chennai was the only team with 17 points other teams (leaving top 3 ofcourse) couldn't manage that

I am a big fan of cks offcouse due to their consistency in last 4 ipl seasons. 2 times winner, 1 time runner up, 1 time semifinalist, also 1 time champions league t20 winner, and this year it is not a fluke , everyone says csk got through 3 lifeline, it is its luck, i dont think so becoz csk has earned that 17 points and no other team other than DD, KKR and MI has earned that points, so csk deserved to be in playoffs, if cks had its 16th mathch the last match of the league and if it had won that not body would have dared to comment on that. csk deserves to be in playoff and hope it wins the title again for their fans.

  • anu on May 21, 2012, 15:49 GMT

why does everybody keep saying chennai dont deserve a place in the playoffs and it was luck that favoured them. It's definitely not their fault to finish their matches before others did.the top 4 go to the playoffs .csk finished fourth and they r through that's as simple as it is.wat if csk vs punjab was the last league match.it would have been meaningless.try to appreciate a team's effort

  • Avvi on May 21, 2012, 15:07 GMT

CSK deserves to be in the playoffs due to their better run rate and other teams were unable to make it and i am quite confident that there will be a Hat-rick for CSK. So Go.... CSK.... Go

  • Murugan on May 21, 2012, 14:46 GMT

Dear Friends Those who are giving the negative comments about CSK should go back to the previous IPL records. They were 4 times semi finalists, 3 times finalist and 2 times Winners. Every team have there good and bad times. It is common for everyone. So please just target CSK on negative remarks. In such a case where these KKT & MI were placed in the initial editions of IPL? It is a game who plays well to lift the trophy, which I like CSK to lift it again to white wash the faces those always suppress CSK. Come on CSK

  • Inbaraj on May 21, 2012, 14:46 GMT

I don't understand people always say chennai's win is only luck. Chennai, punjab, rajastan all lost in their must win matches.. If chennai's match held on last then what will you guys say.. You 've to accept that other teams 've not scored enough in table.. Don't say every other team has lost the match and points because of dhoni's luck.. then we can add players luck in their statistics..

  • partha on May 21, 2012, 14:39 GMT

  • julius on May 21, 2012, 14:38 GMT

Read all the above comments! Well said everone. Though CSK and RCB have secured the same points, it's all to do with the NRR.Why to say LUCK? CSK's NRR isn't higher than RCB? Answer my question pls.common CSK! go ahead!WE ARE THE 3rd TIME WINNER!

  • R.Kannan on May 21, 2012, 14:23 GMT

It has been disappointing to see CSK struggle to qualify. Too many close matches primarily created by slow batting in middle overs. Dhoni needs to score quickly of the first 10 -15 deliveries faced. He also needs to push Jadeja down the order. He may be an ok fielder and a good bowling option but is not good enough to score quickly. Morkel & Aniruddh / Badri need to bat higher than jadeja.

  • Bharath Kumar on May 21, 2012, 14:17 GMT

CSK is the only team to have more destructive batsman

    1.Michael Hussey 2.Murali Vijay 3.Suresh Raina 4.Mahindra Singh Dhoni 5.Dwayne Bravo 6.Albie Morkel 7.Anirudha Srikkanth 8.Ravindra Jadeja 9.Ravichandran Ashwin 10.Ben Hilfenhaus 11.Shadab Jakati

The above squad is going to be applied in playoff.

Batting: You got 7 destructive batsman which starts from Michael Hussey to Anirudha Srikkanth.

Bowling: You got 3 bowlers for pace attack and 4 spin bowlers

Fielding: This squad has great fielders like Michael Hussey,Murali Vijay,Suresh Raina,Ravindra Jadeja,Albie Morkel,Dwayne Bravo.

If all these players play there part in next three games then no teams can win against csk.

  • Raja on May 21, 2012, 13:54 GMT

What Tejas mentioned is correct, CSK completed one chase in 15.3 overs that helped them to increase the NRR. In the post presentation also Raina said 'Fleming asked to finish the game in 15 overs'. That is planning, please wait and watch the other guys and Chennai players, you will get answers why they are in play-off always. Champions will lose but they never lost.I Love chennai team maturity and temperament.

Ravi shastri should immediately apologise on his remark 'backdoor entry' after chennai made it to play-offs with better run rate. A commentator should be neutral and this remark clearly shows his hate and dislike on MSD.

  • Prashant on May 21, 2012, 13:51 GMT

I don't understand why so many people have a problem with CSK going through. This was no 'back-door' entry. They made 17 points and had a better NRR. 5 other teams couldn't beat that. Simple. CSK didn't ask for lifelines. 3 other teams had good opportunities to go through but didn't. So obviously CSK is better than those bottom 5 teams so they made it through. I don't think they will win this year, although I want them to, but it's okay. If DD or KKR win, I will be happy. But you never know. CSK peaked at the right time in both IPL 3 and IPL 4. They might just have turned the corner now that they are through to the play-offs.

  • B S Kumar on May 21, 2012, 13:49 GMT

We thought from brains AND heart, and we're used to seeing MSD drive a bus through a two millimeter opportunity. This is the CSK team bus now. There won't be anybody more positive than CSK come the moment.

  • Jagadeesh on May 21, 2012, 13:39 GMT

As everyone says CSK is lucky. I dont accept it. If they would have finished their last league game at last then other teams would have depended on CSK results. Its foolishness to say lucky. RCB never played as a team. Without Gayle in last edition & Gayle , Devillers this edition. They would have been in last position without them. RR, CSK played as a team . They never depend on a individual performance. KKR without Gambir & Narine they were no where. It was unfortunate that RR & Punjab couldnt make it to top 4. They played well as a team.

  • CSK Fan on May 21, 2012, 13:36 GMT

CSK need not to win this time & prove that they are the best team in IPL history so far, already they proved it, CSK did it what they can do, but the others RR, KXIP&RCB they failed to show their potential, If you failed to pass an examination, how can you tell the other one passed by luck?. ha ha Its all Stomach fire of the other team supporters. Dont have mere commonsense Guys? how can you tell its luck for CSK, Who believes only luck in their life they will tell its luck, they cant even enter into the playoffs how they can win the cup thats why its finished for CSK's favour so dont be silly guys & don't be jealous, encourage the other 3 team to win the cup if you have real stomach fire.

  • Thomas Joseph on May 21, 2012, 13:35 GMT

It is true that CSK as a team was not functioning well this season. But they are a good team and mind that they are the defending champions. The cricket rules put them back to game. So why to diminish CSK ? I am a CSK fan....!!

  • Abdul on May 21, 2012, 13:32 GMT

Most peoples got scared of CSK Entry. Lets see the progress, whether its luck or fate.

  • Pratyush on May 21, 2012, 13:25 GMT

Honestly, CSK played way below par. The Scheduling did not help them either, hence I did not expect them to go through, but Royal Challengers have only themselves to blame.

There's nothing about luck at all here. CSK's sport was out there for 3 teams to take but none were good enough, plain and simple.

  • Sri on May 21, 2012, 12:59 GMT

Hey its not through luck it was on there performance. They managed to left nrr . But others failed to keep up. Guys who ever abort csk! Just wait watch it csk rox again.:-)

  • R. Santhanaraman on May 21, 2012, 12:57 GMT

Well, let us think that Chennai did not complete their engagements and were to play their last match after RCB and Kings XI completed theirs. Then no one would talk about the luck factor. It is just the way the matches were scheudled. However, one needs to agree that CSK did not play to their potential. But they are one of the stronger teams and deserved to be in top four considering the performance of other contenders.

Nobody did any favors for CSK. They had a better Nett Run Rate and won more games to qualify for the playoff. What back door entry, luck, favor??? Give the credit where it is due. CSK played better than RCB, KXIP & RR.

  • anbumani on May 21, 2012, 12:39 GMT

We should not say that luck for CSK. If Chennai Vs Punjab match would have scheduled last, we wouldn't have take about luck. On completion of entire round of league matches, chennai placed fourth and got place in playoff, that RCB/King XI/RR could not able to do. If Pune performed well, they could also make it in last four.

CSK got addicted to this habit which is a dangerous ploy - courtesy MSDhoni , yet the tournament is not over .. its now left with cricketers raising to the stage ( Esp Dhoni the man himself who led the team down in few hops now and Suresh Raina - who still has something in him to prove ) Vijay's form will be a tribute to the dual's here ....

    Fingers crossed.....

  • Jawahar on May 21, 2012, 11:22 GMT

I can understand the argument it is luck if one or more of the games were rained out. Clearly, no other team got to the same points CSK got or beat them in NRR. They deserve to be in the last 4. However, from now on, they need to perform well. Their batting has not clicked as a group. Traditionally, their batting has been their strength and Vijay, Raina & Dhoni will have to click from now on to win the tournament. CSK is too dependent upon foreign players Mike Hussey, Faf du Plessis, Albie Morkel & Dwayne Bravo. Good luck CSK fans.

Ravi Shastri said "CSK's qualification to the playoffs was a back door entry!". Sidhu said "Dhoni is Destiny's Child!". As commentators, don't they talk with some common sense? Do they see the points table? I can understand an RCB fan saying that CSK got through by luck, but how come the commentators, who are said to have excellent knowledge about the game of cricket, can declare so?? True, that Dhoni-led CSK did not perform to their full potential this season, but what about the other 3 - RCB, RR and KP? Have they did so? To be honest, CSK has given chance to those 3 underdogs to come up and try to secure a place for them, but all 3 have failed. They knew what they had to do to push CSK down and steal a place for themselves, but they could not do so, because they are not as good team as CSK! CSK are going to lift the trophy and we have to see the faces of Shastri and Sidhu then, poor commentators!

  • Varun Kaushik on May 21, 2012, 10:52 GMT

well, i feel it's not the time to criticize any team. RCB,CSK,KXIP and RR were competing for the 4th place. but at the end of the day it was CSK who succeeded in winning the spot. had RCB and KXIP won their last games, CSK would be out of the tournament. they had to keep their fingers crossed. nothing was there in their hands. it was these 2 teams who lost their matches and spilled the chances. but we'll surely be missing Gayle storm...

  • Jay on May 21, 2012, 10:49 GMT

CSK is good team. They had all round team effort. More from Bravo and Morkel. But they lost 2 Games against MUMBAI INDIANS and that is main thing. They have never performed well in Bengaluru Chinnaswamy Stadium and Mumbai have lost only 1 Game in Bengaluru Chinnaswamy Stadium so Far in all IPL's. So its going to be tough for CSK and tough competition for Mumbai Indians. It will be a very good contest especially when match is in Bengaluru. Luck = Preparation + Oppurtunity.

  • Ganesh.S on May 21, 2012, 10:48 GMT

CSK won three consecutive matches and then lost to KXIP. But the last match they got the equation down to 40 off 42 . The 2 overs changed the game when gilly fired. How can u call CSK entering the playoffs luck? It was their collective effort that brought them to the playoffs despite the loss to punjab. They got a better nrr than rcb and qualified. who told punjab and rajasthan not to qualify? CSK played below their potential but still got to the playoffs. If they play their potential , they are surely the champions of IPL 2012. So Roar CSK...........

  • Benedict Gnaniah on May 21, 2012, 10:41 GMT

I support CSK and I agree this is sheer luck and they don't deserve it one bit. Certainly RCB deserves to be in the playoffs. But lets look at it this way you have teams like DD, KKR and MI who have played good cricket and been consistent and now adding another good team like RCB would mean just a boring contest of proven strong teams. Instead a team like CSK which has constantly flirted with defeat and occasionally tasted victory may do the unpredictable throwing the entire contest off gear.

  • Dheepak on May 21, 2012, 10:34 GMT

@RCB Fan: Thats exactly what I am trying to say. RCB can change their name to GCB - GAYLE CHALLENGES for BANGLORE.. When he fires they win else they loose......

  • Ramesh on May 21, 2012, 10:30 GMT

I fail to understand why every one tell that CSK does not deserve a place in the play offs.. If we look at it all other teams have performed lesser than CSK and that is why they are in 4th. Please understand like CSK, KXIP, RR and RCB had equal chances which they could not grab. CSK had a better runrate (which comes out of class and not by luck) thereby qualified for playoffs. Probably all this hue and cry comes out because we all are expecting CSK to be table toppers where they could not come up..

  • Sandeep Shrimal on May 21, 2012, 10:24 GMT

Man, some people are born with destiny. MSD is surely one of them, CSK was out and buried after their last league match with 3 teams fighting for that 4th spot and the destiny played a huge part to see CSK in at the cost of 3 other teams. How they played, good or bad, won or lost, till the qualifying stage, has no meaning and significance. From here on, if they can win 3 matches, they will emerge as "Champions". Luck is with them( whether you believe it or not , it plays an important role. People just do not say for the heck of saying that "Cricket is by chance.), now the team has to pull in their strength and some players including MSD to pull their socks to make it happen. God, I remember Ajay Jadeja's comment before the match of CSK and RCB and he had commented that whoever wins that match would go through and would win the IPL. I was wondering over his comment after CSK lost their last match, but now he might have had spoken some " Golden words".

NRR is the best indicator for the teams' dominance over the opposition. Only 4 teams - DD, KKR, CSK and RR have Positive NRR's at the end of the league stage. MI have a Negative NRR, which means that when they lost, they lost heavily and when they won, the scraped through - a telling commentary on MI's much talked about might. They are lucky to be at the 3rd spot, despite a Negative NRR. And Shastry says CSK's is a backdoor entry! Very Funny!

  • Prabu on May 21, 2012, 10:07 GMT

The peoples who are telling CSK went to playoff due to luck are choking their mind and it shows their stupidity. Guys all the teams permitted to play 16 games to qualify for the play offs. not only their last 2 games. Before putting the comments know abt the teams and how they perform during the entire League. 1. CSK is tge Only Team who chased down more than 200 in league stage. 2. They never last a match as easily as compared to all other teams that are in the group 3. Take mumbai, they start the league with big expectation but their batting collaped more than 3 - 4 times under 6~7. 4. Kolkatta and Delhi are teams who are better performed than CSK. 5. RCB is v.v.poor interms of bowling and batting is worst without Gayle and DB.Where as CSK all the players are match winners and performing either side the game in most of the matches. 6. RR start the league with great confidence but last more games at the end 7. Infact RCB dont deserve to be in playoffs. most of their matchs are one sided matchs. 8. Kings 11 are the only team who may get into the playoffs but not. all others inclugind mumbai are not great as compared to chennai.

if u peoples need more proof do check cricinfo statistics. Its somebodies hardwork, dont treat it like this.

The most ardent and knowledgeable fan of CSK will readily admit that they have performed well below their potential in IPL 5. That said, CSK hasn't got into the playoff with just 12 points or after finishing 7th. They are 4th in the points table and the first 4 teams qualify. It is as simple as that! Now, if CSK can finish 4th with a below-par performance imagine what is in store for the other 3 teams with a resurgent unit in the playoff! For Dhoni & Co it is 5th straight semi/playoff. And it could also be 4th Final and 3rd (straight) Cup! Dale Steyn has 10 months to learn to 'Whistle-Podu'.

  • vincent on May 21, 2012, 9:55 GMT

@luckyupriya - :let me put in this way - its a real shame that all the three teams failed to push CSK down

  • factfactfact on May 21, 2012, 9:52 GMT

While CSK have been out of form for most of this season, the simple logic is that the other three teams couldn't achieve what CSK could... Doesn't that make them every bit as deserving? I mean, RCB is a show backed by Gayle and supported by ABD and Dilshan.. When they set a total of 205, CSK chased it down... I feel that CSK stands to gain in the playoffs as they have had gud experience by now and MSD, the genius that he is in situations such as these, may actually pull a stunner here.. Lets wait and see...

  • prabhu on May 21, 2012, 9:48 GMT

  • csk fan on May 21, 2012, 9:45 GMT

Hey guys, it is only the schedule that was kept like that and it is not the other teams who had helped CSK. If that is the case why RCB lost to the mighty Chargers, why RR lost to chargers.....chargers really played well in their last 2 matches which they should have done across the tournament.yes of course csk is not playing up to their standards in this season 5 ie lack of form from Raina,Vijay,Jadeja and Dhoni himself, it is just a matter of one match any one of these guys start clicking then no one can stop this team roaring.......all the best CSK.

  • Hasan on May 21, 2012, 9:40 GMT

What luck Man, why wont you start counting from the first match of IPL V, Csk lost and Mumbai made it to playoffs. If KingsII had won , they would have been in there, same with RR and RCB they lost and team with better point and Run-rate went thru. Mind it Csk won 8 and lost 7 equal to RCB and above RR , Kings II and others down the table. So give credit to them as well not only the Luck. Luck is when Dhoni will life on last ball of final and will take a winning run.

  • Jaggu on May 21, 2012, 9:39 GMT

Its not mean that CSK through by luck/life. CSK is petential and have enough points, net RR in table to place them as 4th in table. RCB didn't played well than CSK (less RR proved). RR and KX were not only lose their must win games. By simpler way, in exams, 5 centums and a failed mark doesn't allow you to get the grade. But it does for just pass in all 6. ;). CSK is just passed last bench guys. Bottom 4 are failed.

  • Tony on May 21, 2012, 9:39 GMT

It's pitiful and a load of gibberish to hear people saying CSK got lucky. The top 4 teams at the end of a 16 match league phase ends in the play off. CSK finished 4th and thus deservedly are through to the play-offs! It's ridiculous to hear things like they got lucky and don't deserve! Just ludicrous! True, they have not been at their best but they are the defending champions, the most successful team in ipl history. I mean 5 seasons and have made it to the playoff each season. That's an achievement in this format! I predict CSK will lift the trophy this time. It's all about momentum and CSK has never quite had it yet this season, and these three progressive games could go in Chennai's favour! x

For me all it shows is CSK, RCB and KP all r in poor form. RCB is lucky due to Gayle/AB or else they wud be competing with DC and PW. KP is not at all a good team. CSK were unlucky with close finishes.

What CSK did was apart from 1-2 matches they never lost badly.

MI is the luckiest this season where they have won games they deserved to lose by some lucky batting and bowling. They still dont deserve to be the 3rd team. No one talks abt them as they have Sachin. But to me a team is good or bad.. and MI was crap. Hope they run out of luck in the playoffs

All the 4 teams that were contending for the 4th place to take part in the playoffs have fought and gave their best in the last couple of matches. CSK and RCB were able reach 17 points while RR and KXIP finished a bit lesser. Out of these two (CSK & RCB), CSK managed to maintain a comparitively healthier run rate than RCB and hence they qualified. There is no luck or help there. None of them did favour to the other, everyone wanted to qualify and fought hard. RCB did not deserve a place in the playoffs thanks to their batting collapse against the fast and furious Steyn! CSK deserve to become champions 3rd time consecutively. They are the rulers of IPL!

  • Harrycrumb on May 21, 2012, 9:17 GMT

CSK was already in the 4th position at the end of their 16 matches....so it was upto the other teams - RR,KXIP,RCB to win their matches and get to that 4th position......So pls stop saying that CSK qualified thanks to RR, KXIP or RCB......

  • Sam on May 21, 2012, 9:11 GMT

I would not agree that CSK is into play-offs just because of the luck factor. It is just that they had finished all their 16 games much earlier than other teams. if any other team could have performed better than Chennai in the matches left, they could have been a part of play-offs. Nobody could do it and CSK becomes the eligible one. No wonder if they lift up the CUP this year as well. Because they always perform as a team and they don't depend on just one or two good players. If somebody slips out on a particular day, the other player scales up and perform and do what is required. Let us wait and watch!

Everyone talk about HOW Chennai was lucky, but i would say it fixture/time table is made so and so. what if the case was RCB finished their last league game and waited for CSK result as outcome? so nobody to be blamed, but RCB, they had their chance to qualify by beating and known the factor how to quality before this game started, but CSK already had the points/Net R.R what RCB don't. so CSK deserved this. according to my view luck factor is few. and mistakes made by RCB is 100%

  • Parik Madan on May 21, 2012, 8:52 GMT

Chennai Super Kings despite not playing to their potential in some of the matches, did enough to qwualify. Agreed, it was with help from Deccan Chargers, who took out the two biggest threats, Rajasthan Royals and RCB, but had Gayle not got out to Dale Steyn, whether we would be talking about all these.? I understand the pressure got to RCB, that is reason, Gayle hit only the second over for 24 runs so that othersa do not feel the pressure. But kudos Dale, in the third over itself pressure got the better of Gayle, who could muster 127 against Delhi could score exactly 100 less this time.

Hence it would be unfair not to count out the luck on CSK's side because Gayle , and after that Kohli. Kohli already got 16 runs off the 16th over. Thenm he hit the last ball also for a possible six, only to get out at the boundary. Saurabh also felt the pressure with RCB needing only 11 runs.

Hats off to RCB to givce the play off place to CSK.. :)

  • Prakhar on May 21, 2012, 8:50 GMT

  • Ganesh on May 21, 2012, 8:48 GMT

Mr Ravi shastri made a comment at the end of the match when RCB lost that CSK made a back door entry to the play offs. This is unfair and not in good taste for a sportsman commentator. I feel it is a derogatory statement to be condemned. Will CSK take up this seriously and inform Mr Ravi Shastri. All the nine teams played 16 games and finally based on the points the play off was decided.

  • G.Mohanraj on May 21, 2012, 8:42 GMT

As many of you said, CSK don't deserve to be in the Playoffs fine. Who else deserve the fourth spot? Check out the last 5 matches for all the teams they will say the same number 3 wins and 2 losses except for pune where all are losses. so for the last 5 matches all teams are same. It is the other 11 matches that decided the playoff berths. Mumbai clinched 3rd spot which is the only team in the playoffs with a negative NRR, do they deserve it? So keeping that in mind, it is evident that except for the top 2 teams and the bottom 2 teams other 5 have equal chances from which mumbai and chennai got through.

  • Maheen Mytheen Khan on May 21, 2012, 8:38 GMT

It is all about the fixtures.. if Bangalore, Rajasthan & Punjab have played all their league matches a head of CSK's final league matches, then there is will be no say as luck. also i guess the cause for CSK struggle should be overconfident of their batting depth. at this knock out stage we cannot experiment but inclusion of 4 foreign players in the playing eleven is crucial. Dwayne bravo & Albie morkel are all rounders and pinch hitters down the order, Faf du plessis is a best fielder & opening batsmen well suitable for t-20 format & fourth foreign player to be included should either be Ben hilfenhas or Nuwan kulsekara and finally my idea is to promote Ravindra jadeja a head of Suresh Raina

  • anan on May 21, 2012, 8:25 GMT

Hey if CSK didnt deserve it then the other teams who LOST and couldnt make it even to the level of CSK deserved it even less. I agree they were lucky.. but they werent always lucky, they got 17 points with a pretty good RR. if its easier for ppl to understand, out of the ones who didnt deserve it (CSK, RCB AND KINGS) CSk deserved it the most! End of story!

Come on fellow desis, which are the only teams among the top four that show over-reliance on Foreign players than Indian, whenever they have won? That should be our criteria for supporting teams. Mumbai - Malinga, Franklin, Smith and Pollard Delhi - Morne Morkel, Pieterson, Warner, Taylor Kolkata - Lee, Kallis, Shakib and Mc'Cullum Chennai - Albie Morkel, Hilfy, Hussey

Out of those only Delhi and Chennai seem to field and be confident about their Indian players and show good team gelling. As such, I see either of the two as the champions in T20 2012.

  • Deepak Menon on May 21, 2012, 8:20 GMT

Chennai set the tone. Other three teams charted out plans to reach the 4th slot outwitting Chennai! All three failed miserably in their game plans! CSK is definitely a better TEAM compared to RCB. except for the 700 plus runs and some brilliant shows by Devilliers, they do not have nothing much to show as a team.. But CSK won their matches by allround displays.. Watch out for Raina, Bravo, Jadeja, Dhoni, Hussey...

  • Nanda KUmar on May 21, 2012, 8:20 GMT

Some of the comments are truely amazing. Not sure how other teams have helped CSK. The fact is that CSK finished their mataches with 17 points. In fact they were actually in a little bit of a dis advantage since they did not know what other teams would do. Having said this, all teams played 16 matches , home and away with all the others. it was a simple case of them playing as many matches well so as to win and get as many points as possible. no body stopped any one else from doing it. if any thing, Bangalore and Rajastan had potentially an easy game against DC ( given DC's form this year0and yet they lost.. Were did Chennai come into this. If any thing the most crucial match that either team can look back and ponder what might have been is the washed out match between CSK and RCB. if the match had been played and one of the teams would have won they would have safely moved into the last 4. That was the only inponderable in the entire league..

  • Nanda on May 21, 2012, 8:14 GMT

I dont understand why people say that csk came to playoff because of the 3 results.it is just because it finished its league game before these teams. And more over its the only team in the play offs without a single bowler or batsman in the top 10 of the tournament which shows that its the ONLY TEAM PERFORMED team without depending on any single player. And its reason for the Net runrate also because it has not lost or won in a large margin, every game is a close match unlike other teams with a large fluctuation. And also Mumbai is the only team that won both its league games against csk, unlike the top 2 teams DELHI or KOLKATA.So to summarise """CSK IS THE TEAM WITH TEAM EFFORT""

I am MI fan. but csk also very good team.

  • Vikneshwar on May 21, 2012, 8:05 GMT

I don't like the term "luck" being quoted here.. 1) CSK is the only team to win both the table toppers(DD and KKR) of this ipl atleast once in this ipl.Thats not "luck". 2)Kings XI Punjab lost to Viru and Taylor less Delhi..DD had only t20 specialist Warner for that match. Where is "luck" here? Instead it was a bad luck for CSK bcos Viru did not play . But despite that Punjab lost .. It is Punjab's failure. 3) RR lost to DC in a must win match . you may say CSK also lost to Punjab in a must win match.Well thats must win match for both the sides.Atlast the team which played well won the match and it was Punjab. But thats not the case for RR. They played against DC(who is already knocked out and almost lost to everyone and just plays for pride) who was also the last ranked team...RR failed to win even DC.. They lost to MI also so badly yesterday..Where is CSK's luck here? Same goes with RCB too.. 4)One pragasbathi told CSK was lucky enough to get good net run rate...Good Net run rate

  • Vikram on May 21, 2012, 8:04 GMT

CSK definitely deserves to be in playoffs. Though they did not perform up to their potential at times, but still managed to secure 17 points which needed them to win that many games, and have good runrate as well. Teams like RCB, though having fire-power like Gayle, Devilliers, Dilshan, Kohli, all four known to be very good T20 players, failed to keep a good runrate, so they didn't deserved to reach playoffs.

I think top 4 teams of the tournament have reached the playoffs, and all 4 of them truly deserve to be there.

All the very best to all the teams.

  • JP on May 21, 2012, 8:04 GMT

  • Abc Xyz on May 21, 2012, 7:59 GMT

I just dont understand why people call this as CSK's luck and blah blah blah..If you analyse all the teams in the competition, accoring to me, only Delhi and Kolkata deserved to be in Play-Offs. Teams like Mumbai,Banglore and Hyderabad were heavily dependent on 1/2 players and wanted them to perform everytime. Luckily for Mumbai, Malinga performed well and Rohit Sharma was decent and they are through. For bangalore Gayle won them half of the games, De-vilears the rest, and when both failed in the last game, they lost. For Hyderabad, inspite of Steyn's deadly bowling and Shikkar Dhavan's consistant batting, they lost games due to their pathetic ( I can't find a worse word) club-level fielding. Pune had none...No team effort and no individual stars and predictably finish last.

On the other hand, if you observe, CSK, RR and KXIP played more lika team, with everyone contributing at some point or other. And among them, CSK were clearly the best. I can't say if CSK deserved to play in pla

  • LNL on May 21, 2012, 7:52 GMT

True, CSK did not play to their potential this season. But calling their 4th place as lucky is a bit too much. They had 17 points (and a positive NRR right from the beginning). If they were sitting on 15 points and still got through, then they would have been lucky. Only RCB matched their points but lost on NRR finally. KXIP and RR, though had chances to move to 18 points, did not cross 16 at he end. Where is the luck factor here? Out of the last 4 matches, CSK lost only to KXIP at Dharamsala where tosses won the matches but CSK won the 3 others including a thrashing of the table toppers and KKR. Imagine the following schedule: CSK was on 11 points after 12 games; CSK is asked to play their last 4 matches in the last one week; they win 3 and lose 1 as above and move to 17 points. Would you still call it luck? It is all a question of scheduling and ultimately who gets to how many points. Is it not true that the other 5 teams failed to get these 17 points despite CSK being off colours?

  • BK, UAE on May 21, 2012, 7:50 GMT

My full money is on CSK... Now that they are through to the final four, they are going to have a repeat of three wins in a row which they did before the loss to Kings XI... And they will take the cup three times in a row... GO CSK GO and get the cup... It is waiting for you to take it...

CSK dosen't deserve a place in the playoffs, they under performed through out the tournement , little bot of luck and somehow RCB lost their final league game against DC, and now CSK in the semi's they will go for kill against MI ( CSK lost their 2 league games against MI).

  • Thyagu on May 21, 2012, 7:27 GMT

Chennai has won 8 matches. It not because of any single performance, its the whole teams contribution. Most of the players were out of form during the start of the tournament, that was the reason for their inconsistent performance. If you just remove the performance of one or two players in the other teams who have qualified for the play-offs, they too are not fit to qualify. CSK always perform as a team. Awaiting a Hatrick from the CSK boys. Go and get it.

  • Bharghavi on May 21, 2012, 7:26 GMT

I'm a die-hard CSK fan! Yes we got absolutely lucky but that's doesn't mean we do not deserve to be there. We absolutely belong there. After all, CSK is the only team that's consistently made it to the play-off all 5 times. Too bad the other teams couldn't win what they had to. Like Siddhu said, Dhoni is destiny's child. Whatever happens, CSK is destined to win :) Go CSK!!!! You are THE BEST!!!! :)

Hi Friends CSK had lot of narrow losses and if you all can recollect the match against mumbai in which BRAVO bowling there was a wide which was not as per the commentators too if I am correct it is 18 / 19 over and the next ball they scored 2 runs and its that made CSK to loose the match , well lot of team had narrow last over wins so no doubt CSK are always good inform as well other teams, lets not try to devide the team and players who are to play as a whole bunch while representing the country INDIA from all the IPL teams.one last thing I really appreciate and say whole hearteadly is we have to solute all the foreign players who have put there efforts and contribution more than our INDIAN players its really a true one

  • Sy on May 21, 2012, 7:18 GMT

The way i see it is RCB, KXIP & RR were not "lucky" enough or good enough to get that 17/17+ pts with a good run rate.. CSK were the first to finish their games in the league stage.. So obviously had to wait for other teams results to know where they stand. @luckyupriya In team sports, the team winning is always based on their performance and other teams performance.. I don't see any shame here. If CSK really don't deserve to be in Play off they will not reach the finals..

  • saravanan on May 21, 2012, 7:17 GMT

I accept, chennai not given good performance. Even others team in form, they could not match with CSK in terms Point & RR. Then how we can say it is LUCK. RCB having minus RR with 17 points and how we can say better than CSK.

  • tejas on May 21, 2012, 7:14 GMT

dont forget the match between RCB vs. Daredevils. RCB had a good chance of improving their net run rate by winning big. Sehwag was out, so everything was going in RCB favor. But still couldnt win big to improve NRR and has to satisfy with 2 points. That's the first luck factor according to me for CSK.

  • Arun Prasad on May 21, 2012, 7:14 GMT

Its unfair to write super kings entered playoffs by back door or lifeline. It clearly shows that whatever csk have done throughout the league is enough to retain their place in the top 4. It means they have played better cricket then the below placed teams. Csk have given chances to 4 other teams (rcb, kxp, rr, mi) but they havent utilised that except mi. Even mi also be kocked out if we won against kxp, imagine if rr won hattrick mi would be knocked with 18 points by negative runrate. Its fair to tell Csk gave life line chances to kxp, rr, rcb and also mi. Since one week there is no team to get the csk's 4th place. Csk was not stealed points from others or got from the lottery draw, they have played better cricket than others throughout the tournament. Now its csk's turn to peak and knock the others... Come on lions. Knock them strongly and make hattrick. All the best super kings...

It was not that chennai went to play off as the other teams failed, chennai played well to get a Good net run rate better than RCB, so when the points tied, if you look at the matchs played againts RCB, chennai won 1 match and other washed away by rain so chennai is better then RCB here, in the RR case they got only 14 points they failed to win the crucial mathces it was not chennai’s favour its RR’s fault not to win, when they are 3 points lesser than chennai no point you can say that chennai qualified bcoz of RR loss, King11 lost their final match which would have made them to qualify to play offs, chennai were sitting in the points table @4 after finishing their league games for 3 days and other eligible teams RR,RCB and Kings11 cannot take over the position it was all the effort from chennai and the lady luck would favour only to people who put efforts, so only chennai got to play offs, Defeat was not declared when you fall down, it is declared when you refuse to get up, chenn

  • Srini on May 21, 2012, 7:02 GMT

CSK has a poor season but yet managed to put more points than KXP, RR and RCB, who supposedly have had good seasons. I wonder what makes people say these 3 teams deserve the SF spot ahead of CSK. I agree they haven't played upto their potential, but does not necessarily mean they were worse than the other challengers.

The simple fact is to win, get the 2 points and climb up the ladder. The teams below CSK simply failed to do that.

I also dont agree with people saying if CSK wins the title, they don't deserve it. KKR and DD, by virtue of their good play during league, only have to win 2 out of 3 games to become champs. If CSK has to win they have to beat the top 3 teams in consecutive games. Any team that does that deserves the title.

  • Johan on May 21, 2012, 7:02 GMT

Hopeless Dhoni and Hopeless CSK always dependent on favors from other. Can't do anything on their own. Do they even deserve to be in the playoffs? of course NOT! RCB was a better side any day. Hmmmm, i smell something fishy in RCB's middle order batsmen in this match. Why they played those unnecessary shots? Were they influenced by someone or did it on purpose? Who knows, but CSK entry from backdoor surely seems fishy to me.

  • raul mum on May 21, 2012, 7:01 GMT

Whatever happened!! Now the top four teams are DD(sehwag), KKR(gambhir), MUM(Sachin) and CSK(Dhoni). All these four guys were involved in australia (senior/rest/slowrunning). Sehwag isnot gonna let dhoni win!! CSK WONT BE ABLE TO BEAT MUM EITHER.

  • gmsj on May 21, 2012, 6:59 GMT

People say that CSK have the devil's luck. But looking at it objectively, CSK was on 17 points for past 4-5 days. It was left to the 3 teams - Punjab, Rajasthan & Bangalore to go past it. They didnt do this nor did CSK defeat them without playing! (other than ofcourse pray to God for transit to play-offs).

As Greg Norman said, the harder you practice the luckier you get!! This holds good for any professional sport.

  • Ceres on May 21, 2012, 6:56 GMT

The league matches are made to filter the best 4 teams out of 9. And I don't see that RCB or KXIP have played well enough to be in top 4. RR need to win both their last 2 games, but they lost both of them while RCB lost to a potentially inferior team Deccan. If we look at CSK's luck, it is not helping them much. Otherwise, the MI vs CSK match would have gone their way (14 runs of last 3 balls). But they defeated DD and RR in the past week. So, they well deserve to be in the playoffs. And they are going to beat Mumbai there. Just wait and watch!!!

  • BALA on May 21, 2012, 6:50 GMT

Imagine if csk Vs kxi scheduled as last league match and even if they lost that match then the luck factor, etc, etc would not have arisen. But, CSK did not perform to their potential and do not deserve to be in play-offs. Also most of the teams don't have balance line-up and only this lead CSK to play-offs. Let us wish good luck to all 4 teams in play-off. NOW CSK is the underdog !!! We witness in most situation only underdogs prevails !!!

  • Kumar on May 21, 2012, 6:49 GMT

A team that had the top scorer in the competition and who single handedly demolished opposition still fails to make the top four, does not deserve a place there. It effectively means that Royal Challengers, none other than Gayle offered any challenge to the opposition and that explains their position.

It is not luck for CSK, its performance is better relatively and they have the ability to bounce back.

  • Gsr on May 21, 2012, 6:48 GMT

The media continuously say that CSK has entered the play-offs through the back door. But its not true and many will disagree. The 3 teams played very badly on that given day. Chennai has already qualified for play-offs but the threesome failed to make it. If chennai were it this position they would made it easily as they are very strong at the end stages of the tournament.

This season they got some fear about to keep their champion name third time. They have to play their natural game in playoffs. If Vijay and Raina got their form back in playoffs sure no one can beat CSK.MSD is the best and luckiest caption in all over cricket. In playoff if you compare the other teams DD,KKR and MUM, CSK have to do little hardwork with only MUM. • Dawood on May 21, 2012, 6:26 GMT

Chennai may have come into the Play-Offs. But, they have come through Back Door. It's not a genuine and legal one. They have to be knocked out in the eliminator game. If a single team is winning the championship for three years continuously then why rest of the teams are playing?

  • anotherCSKfan on May 21, 2012, 6:25 GMT

Just in case, if RCB had won their last match would anyone say its just luck by which they qualified. CSK beat the table toppers-DD and KKR to secure their 17 points. Every team/player have to have some kind of luck/timing to prove their talent. From now on, even if CSK goes to the final, people would still say its all because of luck.

  • Balaji K on May 21, 2012, 0:51 GMT

Too much is being made out of these 3 results and help from other teams to Chennai. Yes, the results went in favour of CSK. But the way I see it, Chennai, Bangalore, Rajasthan and Punjab needed to win their last 2 matches to qualify. Chennai, Bangalore and Punjab won the first game but lost the second. Rajasthan lost both. Chennai and Bangalore finished with same points but Chennai were placed with a better NRR. Kudos to them. At least, Bangalore won the toss in their final match and decided their fate. Chennai had the misfortune of playing on a fresh, grassy, seaming pitch and also didn't have the advantage of winning the toss. If CSK were able to take advantage of the other results, it's because they placed themselves to exploit the situation. They haven't played to their potential in this edition but I guess they have done enough to qualify.

it is an opportunity for CSK to show their skills & talent in the PLAYOFFS, as they are best team but unfortunately this season completely OUT OF FORM as a Team, here and there only few players did well to get those 16 points and 01 addl point due to rain. Also, they lost to PUNJAB and MUMBAI two times in their league matches, which put them in big trouble. Now, it is their turn to give their best to MUMBAI. In Qualifier Match against KOLKATTA or DELHI and in the FINALS against KOLKATTA or DELHI. CSK MAKE IT IN 2012 TOO... BE A CHAMPION for consecutive THREE sessions.

Though I am a CSK fan, I should say that they are woefully out of form this season. Having said that, KingsXI, RR and RCB were not better than CSK. For RCB, it has been a 1-man show. It would be DD or MUM who will win the cup. KKR doesn't have big-match temparament and MUM has the ammunition to pack off CSK in the semis.

  • Ankit Srivastava on May 20, 2012, 18:22 GMT

While I am a big Dhoni fan, it would be a shame if CSK went through the finals. They played well below their potential throughout the tournament and needed 3 lifelines as detailed in this article to make it. They dont deserve being a finalist. Unlike last year where they started poorly but fought back determinedly in the second half, this year they were limp throughout both stages

CSK got 17 points on the board. KXIP and RCB needed to put 17 pts at least on the board as well as push up their run rate to match CSK's effort.

So this is nothing to do with luck, or "help from other teams". It is simply scheduling! RCB/KXIP didn't deserve to go through as they didn't finish 4th!

True, it was a lucky one for CSK. But they will now become a team who will roar in the play-offs. Luck factor is there, but luck is when preparation meets opportunity. They got an opportunity now and they have 3 days to prepare well! Go CSK Go!!

Now they have come I think they will make full use of it !!! We all know how dangerous CSK can be in the playoff stages. . . .

hey, no doubt that CSK is lucky to be there, but lets be honest that apart from 3 top teams, no team has really looked superb. It was Gayle & De Villiars force that drove RCB throughout and when they failed, RCB choked out!! CSK is a really good team, no doubt! but will they lift up their game this time and show the class they possess, is really a mistery. Looking forward for a cracking 4 games!! :)

Though I am a CSK fan, I should say that they are woefully out of form this season. Having said that, KingsXI, RR and RCB were not better than CSK. For RCB, it has been a 1-man show. It would be DD or MUM who will win the cup. KKR doesn't have big-match temparament and MUM has the ammunition to pack off CSK in the semis.

it is an opportunity for CSK to show their skills & talent in the PLAYOFFS, as they are best team but unfortunately this season completely OUT OF FORM as a Team, here and there only few players did well to get those 16 points and 01 addl point due to rain.

CSK deserved to be there. Now they play a different game when coming into Play-Off's. Its going to be tough to beat them. They know how to win matches during these time
