Dhoni suspended for one ODI due to slow over-rate

MS Dhoni has been suspended for one ODI and India fined for the team's second over-rate breach in ODIs in less than a year. India were found to be two overs short during their 110-run defeat against Australia in Brisbane, after time allowances were taken into consideration. Match referee Andy Pycroft also fined Dhoni 40% of his match fee and the team's other players were fined 20% each.

This was India's second over-rate breach this tour. Dhoni was suspended from the Adelaide Test earlier this year for a slow over-rate in the previous game in Perth, where India had gone in with four fast bowlers. Today, at the Gabba, the visitors played four seamers again. Ravindra Jadeja's left-arm spin was not employed in the game, prompted, as Dhoni said, by the presence of several left-handers in the Australian side, though it could have improved the over-rate if used.

The latest suspension is a consequence of two "minor" over-rate offences in ODIs within a year- the first one being during the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai. The grounds for the decision to take such an action against any guilty captain were laid at the ICC's annual conference in Hong Kong last year where harsher penalties were called for against teams failing to meet their over-rate targets.

"At its meeting in June 2011 in Hong Kong, the ICC Executive Board had discussed the issue of slow over-rates and accepted the recommendation of the ICC Cricket Committee that a captain of an international side should be suspended for one match if his side is guilty of two minor over-rate offences in the same format over a 12-month period," the ICC said.

A 'Minor Over-Rate Offence' is when a side is found to be upto two overs short in an ODI or a T20I and upto five overs short in a Test.

The on-field umpires Steve Davies and Billy Bowden, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth umpire Paul Reiffel laid the charge, to which Dhoni plead guilty and accepted the suspension. "Dhoni also acknowledged that he had been kept informed of the position regarding over-rates on a regular basis throughout the match and therefore accepted the decision," the ICC release stated.

Dhoni was suspended for slow over-rates more than years ago as well. He had to sit out of two ODIs during a home series against Sri Lanka, as a result of which Virender Sehwag had to take over. India will now take on Sri Lanka on February 21 without Dhoni, their most consistent batsman this series with scores of 44*, 58* and 56 in his last three appearances.

I have high regards for Dhoni as player, captain and for the nice person he seems to be. But I would disagree with many who think it's unfair. It's totally fair. Dhoni and Indian team should have known they are way below over rate and should have shown some urgency. Even the commentators were repeatedly talking about it. Indian team and BBCI could be rich but I am sorry to say they are not above rules. Before penalizing Dhoni the time wasted for no fault of India team was reviewed. I know it does not matter for Dhoni and Indian team memebers that their match fee was reduced but they should have known Dhoni was penalized for similar offece earlier also. I feel bad as Indian supporter for our captain & team for letting us down again. Anyway all the best to Dhoni & Indian team to pay harder and win the series for them and for lots of supporters like us. You can do it India!

Big deal banning him now. Why was this not done at the World Cup final 2011 ? The slow over rate and delay (Sri Lanka had 45 minutes more of bowling with a wet ball) cost Sri Lanka the match. When India batted, the number of overs should have been reduced to 47. India was given the full quota of overs and a the World Cup ! Dhoni should also have been banned for at least six matches for that offence.

IT IS VERY SHAME decision the ICC has taken. . . It is very embarrassment for the Indian team by the ICC that the ICC has suspended to his captain MS Dohni for the next ODI game in the CB series. Actually, they don't have the fair rules and regulations in their book; in addition to this truth, they should consider the fact that the opponent team had played the game with the left and right handed players on the field. So, the captain doesn't have an option to save the time; moreover, we can see and observe his difficulties on the TV screen which he was facing to set the field for the variation type of the batsmen in the ground. The touring squadron management should take the necessary steps for the future safeguard.

Maybe is there a slow over rate in the Match Against India vs Australia but think who wasted a time... First Batsman.. then Third Umpire pressing wrong button... to Mike Hussey... why not suspend him.. wasted 5min and players take a time for every single delivery...

@seaming wicket- Well teams prepare pitches which do not help spinners at all to combat India, so why is suddenly not fair the other way around? If India's fans attitudes are so much of a problem why are all the other cricket boards trying to arrange fixtures there?

@Mohaseen Khan - They take those things into consideration when calculating how many overs a team is behind. Remember that a quick usually takes longer to bowl an over so the more quicks you play the more you have to manage the over rate.

Good. Dhoni (due to 1 match ban) and Sachin (due to injury) are out of this match. We can safely rest either Rohit or Raina or evemn Jadeja for this match. Let us play Rahane and Manoj Tiwari. Gambhir, Sehwag, Kohli,Tiwari, Raina, Ashwin, Parthiv Patel, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, Vinay Kumar and Rahane should be the team. Let us see how this team will perform.

  • POSTED BY on | February 20, 2012, 10:17 GMT

my playing eleven for next match with sri lanka would be- sehwag, sachin, gambhir, kohli, raina/rohit, parthiv, jadeja(as he performs well as a spinner and a handy batsman), ashwin, zaheer, pathan and vinay.

Gabba match were clearly showed Dhoni's poor captaincy. His field placement, bowling changes were very ordinary under pressure even comparable to Pontings's captaincy. but his captaincy is OK when there is less or no pressure on Indians. his wicket keeping also was not up to international standard. but his batting is good under pressure and finishing is excellent under pressure..... i think what India needs at this stage is a good captain who can do captaincy well under tense situations..

  • POSTED BY on | February 20, 2012, 9:02 GMT

this is a very stupid rule by the ICC .... what is a captains fault here ..... the field umpire should be made responsible for over rates ....these umps make goof ups match after match and they aren't even reprimanded ..... is it the responsibility only of the players only that game should be played within the rules??

But do you knwo what - he is still the best player Australia has produced and he is younger to Tendulkar by about 20 months. He has played cricket for 16 years ( Tendulkar 22 yrs) and still he is dropped. The Australians are mean If Ponting was in India this would have never happened. LOOK AT TENDULKAR.

I don't understand why they are not picking Rahul Sharma..i think he did well in 20-20 game..Even Tiwari and Praveen kumar deserves the chance..Vinay Kumar & Umesh Yadav have had their chance and didn't impressed me much.. yesterdays match was painful to watch for few other reasons other than Indian losing. Vinay Kumar took 5 mins to bowl 3 deliveries. How on earth can we finish the quota if he bowls like this. Mike Hussy was taking too much time. He will have drinks and jsut when we thought it was over, then he will ask for a new bat. So the reserve guy has to run back again and get his bats, 5 mins gone. How can we finish the overs in time if he goes on like this. umpired were mere spectators, they didnt do anything to urge the batting team or bowling team. And to add, our captain didnt utilise the greatest alrounder who cant bat or bowl, can only field, My Jadeja. How are we supposed to finish the overs. Everybody has to be penalized not only the bowling team captain. Yesterday Mike Hussey easily wasted 10 mins in the middle...

4 medium pace bowlers of India where used. of course mike hussey and forest made sure there was lot of delay but i never saw Indian pace bowlers bowling allotted overs in time. Our medium pacers take as much time to deliver as shoaib akhthar or bret lee they are the main culprits. off course dhoni knows this. by half time India where 30 mins at least delay fans might think its Okay don't penalize captains.but definitely it should be penalized cos fans like us who watch this game all over world make sure we won't sleep and plan to watch accordingly its high time indian pace bowlers realize the rational behind bowling an over according to there run up not just by tag of being pace bowler. Remember most of other bowling including australia use 4 pace bowlers almost every match (watson / kallis) n still maintain decent over rate and there pace bowlers are genuine pace

Why fans are so blind about rules n regulations, its not just about fours n sixers, try to learn some basics. There's always allocated time for these short drinks, referee said India is slow by 2 overs. Do you fans think India took 35 mins to bowl just 2 overs? I would have been 7 overs delay if short drinks wasn't considered.

  • POSTED BY on | February 20, 2012, 5:31 GMT

Ofcourse I agree of some poor selections though.

Besides Srilanka are yet to win a game against India for as long as we can remember. There should not be any change for the next game except Sehwag's inclusion. Its a crucial game and no new player could come in and score immediately. Better to persist with the same team.

Something wrong with this picture. India played like they wanted to lose the last match and now Dhoni, the best finisher in the one-day format is out of the must win game. How can India lose the plot so badly? Makes me wonder if there is something else going on. The SL game can be over at the toss - if India bats first, there is a chance, but if not SL wins. I don't see anyone else in India's batting line up finishing a game.

I feel sorry for Indian fans and Indian cricket team. They had an endless series of disappointments after the world cup. Indian team is not as bad as their performance in recent past reflects. Their fans have very very high expectations from their team after world cup and players are under tremendous pressure and actually they crumbled under the pressure. When you are under pressure, nothing works, every thing goes wrong and that is what happening with team India. You bring in any player, throw out as many players as you want, change captains, its not gonna help unless this pressure from media (may God protect everybody from indian pakistani media) , from fans eases out a bit. My prediction is that this slump will continue untill team india reaches to 5th or 6th position in ranking, then their fans and media will sort of give up, players will feel less pressure and they will start performing to their true potential.

All Asian team FANS are NO different with their attitudes!!! ------------------------------------------- Its true to an extent. Some SL fans are arrogant. Some Pak fans are arrogant. But SL cricket is not defined by arrogance. India is. Arrogance of India is on a different level. Everybody knows this. Indias attitude problem in cricket has been noted by almost everyone who follows the game. Indian players and the BCCI leave comments which other teams and boards dont. Gambhir says India will prepare dustbowls in India to take revenge. Harbhajan says he does not care if India lose because they won the WC and thats all that matters. Sehwag says Bangladesh dont deserve to come to India. BCCI says winning in India is all that matters. Other cricket nations dont act like this.

@Malti65 : Just for your info mate, the captain can speak with umpire asking for clarification anytime.. If Punter got away by literally blasting an umpire for a DRS decision, Dhoni doesn't even deserve to get a call from officials.. That was just a small thing that happened on the field.. This incident is still better than what Lee did every ball to Dhoni by constantly irking him.. Not sure why India go with 4 pace bowlers.. Rahul was decent against Aussies and you never write off your first choice spinner(Ashwin) against one team.. Just he should have played with better frame of mind.. I expect Ashwin to replace Umesh/Vinay(If he is rested) next match..

Point 1: Australian Tracks -->Favorable to Fast Bowlers, Point 2: Heat. Point 3: On-field glitches. These 3 points coz, they contribute more than Dhoni as a capt. to flounder on overrates. Being in Australia do you expect ppl to play 2 or 3 spinners and that too on a seamer friendly track? and to use spinners just to speed up the overrate? Cmon are we playing a sport or are we making someone to do something for the sake of doing. Naturally when you use 4 seamers the run-ups are long and this is where heat factor comes in wherein u need more fluids to keep you going which leads to non-scheduled drinks break in the middle (which was utilised by Aussies as well). Why arent the umpires stopping this non-scheduled drinks break. Time taken for some no sense decisions have been checked? Not commenting to support dhoni, these fines & bans are given to asian countries never heard of english or aussie teams getting fined on slow overrates. hope we will see fair n square governance on this law.

@Leggie, MSD said the other day that umpires make mistakes and we should accept those.

  • POSTED BY on | February 20, 2012, 2:23 GMT

Had it NOT been for the bad decisions that went against Sri Lanka on two occasions SL would have been heading the table. Lets hope to see better umpiring in the matches to come & the better team declared worthy winners. Umpires also must get out of the habit of always going to the third umpire for the flimsiest of reasons. If the can't decide a Run Out when the batsman is yards OUT the deciding Umpire is NOT fit to continue in the role.

  • POSTED BY on | February 20, 2012, 2:09 GMT

Australian batsmen were wasting time by calling for water so often, so why is Dhoni penalized for that? The batsmen were asking for the screens to be moved so many times, that wasted time too. And the referees were not saying anything while the game was going on. It is a poor decision. And to you all giving up on Dhoni - this is a perfect example of why Indian teams do not stick together. Grow up folks.

Though it's harsh for any Indian fan but the sense of this probability has taken birth during the Aus batting when an over run down to around 8 minutes! Not only that instance only there was frequent drinks and field setting by the Indians. No doubt according to the law captain is one who held responsible for everything, though he has not bowl himself, but it's his duty to hasten up things. It seems that Indian players have no planning whatsoever for a particular match or opponent. I always think that they are like a serviceman who goes for his 'routine' work for 7-8 hours. Lack of planning clearly showed by the team when they finished off Zaheer's spell in 40 overs and medium pace of Vinay & Pathan is there to feast upon. Since watching Indian cricket I haven't understand why they are so eager to play with 7-8 batsmen when they can't take you to 300 or to chase. What's the use of big gun if you have to play 7 batsmen. Now there is less hope for India to reach the final.

Also i feel gambhir is a better captain than sehwag. so my team for tomo s match. (sachin rested cause of his injury) Sehwag, parthiv (wk), gambhir (Captain),kohli, manoj tiwari, raina, irfan, ashwin, rahul sharma, vinay, zaheer. think many ll agree this is our best team for tomo s match :)

Our bowlers never clicked as a team and especially the fast bowlers. I guess, each one of them thinks that others would bowl well, so it does not matter if I don't bowl that well. There were too many short pitched balls yesterday. Whenever there are four fast bowlers, Dhoni gets the stick. I think he did not bowl Jadeja to make sure that he can give chance to Manoj Tiwari at the expense of Jadeja. But now, there are too many options for Manoj to fit in.

note that India actually finished their overs 31 minutes after the scheduled finish time according to the ABC commentators and the channel 9 commentators. So there were pretty generous allowances made for time to have India only 2 overs behind time. As to whether it matters in one dayers it means that the schedule for everything is disrupted and there are legal matters to do with how late lights can be used

  • POSTED BY Mad_Hamish on | February 20, 2012, 1:01 GMT

It was strange because I remember the time when Raina was bowling to Wade and Raina was bowling his overs very quickly. It felt like Raina was getting through his overs at less than 3 minutes at some stage. If that is the case, imagine how slow the rest of the overs were! Having said that, I could understand how umpire pressing the wrong button would have annoyed him. Such a reaction is bound to happen by anybody. And didn't anyone find Chappelli and Mark Nicholas' belief that catch replays are useless VERY hypocritical since they are pro-UDRS which overall wastes far more time. They say for catches the umpires are in a better position and yes for lbws the umpires are not in a better position and technology is better (actually the umpires is straight on for the lbws and normally has to look at an angle for the catches so that was pretty stupid to say).

  • POSTED BY whyowhy on | February 20, 2012, 0:25 GMT

The umpire did not press the wrong button, the buttons were wired incorrectly and must have been done by an Indian electrician.............go on bash everyone in sight and ignore the cold (not cool) performance by the Indians, dissent by the young bucks (Kholi in particular) was more than evident and it is surprising that it was not noted by the umpires and match referee and punished......say what you want about the seniors but Tendulkar and Shewag are perfect gentleman whenever they represent India and even though their bats are not talking at present they should be asked to talk to these young bucks who are getting out of hand.

To those wailing about the unfairness of it all, read @Adee Amjad's post, he has it spot on. To those asking why the ICC cares about over rates in ODIs, I believe it's got something to do with TV broadcasting schedules. Now try to figure out for yourselves who would have an interest in stuff like that.

I would of liked the author to have put more detail into the "allowances" made at the Gabba. I say this because it was almost farcical how slow the sight screens moved & sometimes seemed to take a minute to be correctly positioned. Whilst I think India are notorious for slow over rates when they have 3 or more seamers in their side, I think the groundstaff at the Gabba played a large part on this instance!!

  • POSTED BY Nutcutlet on | February 19, 2012, 21:59 GMT

As usual, there are a number of posters who just don't get it. These rules are the same for all sides playing ODIs. Other captains nearly always seem to manage to fulfil the requirements of completing their team's overs in the stipulated time (always moderated in the light of stoppages that are not down to the fielding capt.). Dhoni is a bit of a ditherer in setting his field. Just watch him closely the next time he's directing his side, whenever that is. Is he a good captain of a side in decline? I think the jury's out on this one. Perhaps no one else could captain this Indian side that looks so care-worn and trampled on. To me he looks tired, just going through the motions. There is no fire there that's evident - or is that what is meant by 'cool'? Could 'cool' really be cold (& fed up)?

  • POSTED BY on | February 19, 2012, 21:35 GMT

Now Dhoni is out.We shuld wait and watch how team perform.I m sure it will be much more worse without him.I don't doubt Dhoni's captaincy but why he is persisting with Jadeja if Aswin has prove to be a better allrounder than him on large grounds like in Australia. And why not try youngster Manoj Tiwary in place of rohit who might might have good technique but not temperament. And as a fielder both are at par.

  • POSTED BY HaddockinOz on | February 19, 2012, 21:34 GMT

The constant moving of the SINGLE! sightscreen is a joke, why on earth do test grounds in Oz only have one screen at each end? Some overs take ages to bowl with several changes of the screen taking place, it's soooooo frustrating. Then there are all the unauthorised breaks, and over elaborate field changes by fussy skippers, the umpires should step in and stop all the time wasting.

It was a hot day at the Gabba. Dhoni's got a harsh one here, but having said that he didn't do justice to the team he selected. If the overrate was going out of control he should have bowled Jadeja instead of a fast bowler. Baffling selection to play Jadeja, not bowl him. Ashwin should play all matches in this series.

Blessing in disguise folks. He was not going to score a match winning knock anyway. Last 3 matches, India had messed up with chase, courtesy his ridiculously slow batting. That is not going to help India's cause unless you have 150 something to chase!

  • POSTED BY on | February 19, 2012, 17:04 GMT

The Loud mouth of Dhoni will atleast be silenced for 1 match. Thank God. Dhoni is actually dividing the team like Ganguly used to do. Dhoni wants to play dead woods like Rohit who hasnt scored 50 runs in 5 innings with command to play & rest seniors like Sachin. Dhoni is playing politics now. He comes late in the order just to promote his batting average, once in 5-6 chases he wins for the team & the media goes singing praises. Ofcourse, he is a good keeper batsman but he need not play politics. He has earned 2 suspensions in Australia because of playing 4 quicks & the results have been a sound hammering. He is not a good captain outside sub-continent most of his stale plans get exposed. But for Sachin's 110 not out & 90+ in 2 finals of the same CB series in 2008 he wouldnt have won a ODI premier tournament cup. Even then he was praising the youngsters but not the greatest cricketer in the planet (Sachin). Sachin is too dignified that is the problem, he should retort Dhoni & slap him

@raj_against_the_machine - The things the opposition did like changing bats and getting drinks are excluded when the umpires/match referee works out how much time is spent in the innings, so it is fair that Dhoni is suspended. Anyway Dhoni has always been slow with the over rate and deserves it, if you look at most matches India have fielded, they always finish about 10-15 mins after the sheduled time.

Tiwary won't get a chance. but even if he does, he will be out-of-form for sitting out too long just like Rohit. Still have below- par performer Raina and pointless Sachin. There is NOT 1 person in Indian team that is consistent but I still love you Team India. Now us Indian fans can easily say that SL's win in next match is already handed to them on a silver, golden, diamond platter. They are arrogant themselves but will call Indians the arrogant ones. 20 runs can be saved now without Dhoni. LOL. He says seniors cost India 20 runs when they are fielding, then why Rohit Sharma his favourite batsman (non performer) cant even score 20 runs in 5 innings? Dhoni wants himself to be the senior most in the team so that he can boss around. Dhoni is very wily & dangerous for India.

Remember Dhoni you may have started to earn more money from 2010 than Sachin but Sachin has earned the people's respect in India & everywhere which Dhoni can hardly reach 25% of him. Dhoni is a failure when playing test matches abroad his 4 centuries are all in Sub-continent. His keeping was badly criticised for 3 months tour of England & this cost India all the tests & ODIs in a win less tour. Now he scored 2 - 50s in ODIs he is tearing his mouth side ways & thumping his chest as if he is the only performer.

Why is this such a big deal if the team takes 15 extra minutes? Why not increase the time window for another half hour so that everyone could easily finish the overs in the given time? What's the point of keeping the captain and bowlers on their toes with such vengeance ? And how shameful does this sound "Match referee and umpires laid their charges", as if Dhoni is some sorta criminal ?? Absolutely shameful and ridiculous stuff.

this is not fair...Aus batsmen have taken many drinks breaks in between overs..india will be missing a good finisher in the next match.Raina and Rohit should take more responsibility and finish the game well.

  • POSTED BY Ameega on | February 19, 2012, 15:10 GMT

How do these people know Dhoni's over-rate is low? Any timing device on this planet is not 100% perfect, so should not be used. Instead it should be a call of on field umpires without assistance of any technology. However in special circumstances, like Kohli's dismissal last night, technology can be used to check whether there is any benefit of the doubt for Indian players.

  • POSTED BY raj_against_the_machine on | February 19, 2012, 15:05 GMT

Adding insult to injury. AUS didn't help matters any while they were batting; they took their sweet time late in their innings getting drinks and changing bats.

And who cares if it's slow, it's limited-overs so each side is still going to get their 50-overs. It's not like Test where a team might use this strategy to sand-bag the other team in order to give them less time to build up their run total, dragging the match towards sunset, etc.

Then if india loose any of their next matches after coming SL Aus match, and if SL win any of next matches,India will have to pack the bags for home.

This would give Dhoni a well deserved but ill timed rest.Aussies are all but in the finals and it is ,as usual, upto India and Ceylon to fight for the other spot.Tuesday's match should be a SF of sorts.I feel,Indians will beat a depleted Aus next Sunday at SCG to book a spot in Finals.Organizers can ill afford India and Australia not playing in the Finals and never found wanting in Co-operation,the Islanders would be only too glad to oblige this arrangement.

  • POSTED BY on | February 19, 2012, 14:31 GMT

I think this is harsh... It was an extremely hot and humid day and there were injuries for which a captain cannot be held accountable. Not to forget, Aussie batsmen were delaying a lot too having drinks every 45 mins or so. All these factors need to be considered by the ICC before suspending the captain for a match....

  • POSTED BY Jack_India on | February 19, 2012, 14:30 GMT

With four medium pacers, this was bound to happen. We need at least two slow bowlers with short run-ups.

My line-up for the next match- viru, sachin, gambhir, kohli, parthiv, raina, pathan, rahul sharma, zaheer, vinay and umesh!! There will be a pure balance in this line up!! But the only thing is concern is "where to bat parthiv???" there are gonna be 4openers in such case!!

  • POSTED BY playitstraight on | February 19, 2012, 14:09 GMT

Another Dismal performance by Indian Cricket Team led by ms dhoni the skipper. It only reflects the sorry state of the nation as well as the BCCI governing body who r ready to send team abroad with the same line ups.Strict action needs to be taken now as the SLOW OVER RATE CONTROVERSY has sparked the ICC PANEL again with MS DHONI in picture once again. If this goes as it is then team india will have to play in their own country and will be banned from playing outside. Abhinav Tyagi

As a result of India's slow over rate in world cup finals Sri Lanka had to bowl at midnight & match was not supposed to be continued till that long. So dew played a big part at midnight & Sri Lankan bowlers couldn't spin & york the ball because of that. That's the main reason why Sri Lanka couldn't win the finals even after putting a big score

More appropriate punishment. Australia only have to bowl 48 overs and India start at 1 wicket for no runs. Dhoni in the scorebook as bowled Ponting (opposition captain) 0. Hurts his average and incentivizes captains as they get recognition. Bowled Ricky!

  • POSTED BY zeden165 on | February 19, 2012, 13:44 GMT

Sri Lankans will be overjoyed, with Dhoni out of the way it would be an easy win for Sri Lanka and more misery on India, bring on India, SL is ready to beat them even if Dhoni's there.Come on Sri Lanka bring the CB Series home...Sri Lanka jayawewa!!! Victory is yours.

Looks like the loss is not sufficient!!!

  • POSTED BY on | February 19, 2012, 13:41 GMT

If dhoni keeps doing this it is't his fault. His team mates are not in the game and not using their heads in the game. Bowlers don't get to their run up mark quickly, fielder not following their captain and the match situation and that's y dhnoi takes time to do the traffic in the field. Dhoni isn't guiding a school XI team, all other players are matured enough to know all these things.

look at the Indian line up Gambir / Sehvag / Sachin / Raina - Has captained India Kholi - Captain of U-19 Indian team IPL team captain R.Sharma - was the vice captain in the past Jadeja - V.Captain of IPL team Z.Khan - was the vice captain I.pathan - IPL team captain

If these players cant back dhoni to keep up with the over rate who can ?

  • POSTED BY on | February 19, 2012, 13:24 GMT

suspending Dhoni when his hamstring troubles would have prevented him from playing in Tuesday's match against Sri Lanka was a pointless decision. Had Dhoni not made his hamstring troubles worse during his vain 56 run effort against Australia THEN the suspension order would mean something.

But this, slow over rate thing is getting too much for Dhoni. He can make record of sorts with this. But anyway this was comming in todays match. India were about 30 minutes late in compleating their innings.

  • POSTED BY TontonZolaMoukoko on | February 19, 2012, 13:10 GMT

While I agree with the test ban - a slower over rate can affect the completion of a match and can leave the crowd starved of action - I don't understand this one. With most high profile ODIs played under lights now, a slow over rate means that the game finishes a few minutes later and makes no affect on the actual result. Although with the amount of spin overs bowled by the Indians, they should never be in any over rate trouble really.

  • POSTED BY on | February 19, 2012, 13:08 GMT
