Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders will kick off IPL 2013 by hosting Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens on April 3. The 76-game league will have the same format as it did in the 2012 season, with each of the nine teams playing the others home and away, before the playoffs.

The top four teams at the end of the round-robin stage on May 19 will qualify for the playoffs. The Qualifier 1 will be played in Chennai between the top two teams in the league and the winner of that match will secure a place in the final, in Kolkata on May 26. The loser of the Qualifier 1 will play the winner of the Eliminator, contested between the third and fourth teams in Chennai, in Qualifier 2, and the winner of that match in Kolkata will make the final.

Hyderabad Sunrisers, the new IPL franchise owned by Sun TV network, will play their first game on April 5, at home against Pune Warriors.

IPL 2013 will be played at 11 venues - the nine home venues plus Dharamsala and Ranchi. Kings XI Punjab will play their last two home games in Dharamsala, while Knight Riders will travel to Ranchi for their last two home games.

@abhiyog: Nothing against test cricket..its all abt change...adapt or get the hell out of the way !!!. Sure test cricket has its exciting moments too, but thats too far in between and certainly not on pitches tailor made for batting....right now T20 is the crowd puller and as far as i can see it will rule for the next few years until some other format comes up...sure test cricket is taking a hit..people probably said the same thing about 60 overs ODI when it was introduced...now its the turn of T20's. Cant wait for the IPL to start !!!

@abhiyog: Well the answer to your question is very simple. Just take a look at yourself. What are you doing commenting on an IPL article when you despise it so much ? Hope you have your answer. Peace.

@here2rock: Whether you are an Indian or not, you cannot deny the fact the IPL is a success story !!! It's the mother of T20 leagues and a vision for modern day cricket. Test cricket is a zombie, a living dead entity which will likely fail to see the dawn of a new day in a few years. T20 is the cricket for EVERYONE. As Indians, we should be proud of it. Those who sing prayers for the safety of test cricket should be ashamed of themselves because there are other forces at play here that would eventually kill the oldest format of the game. Factors like the ICC themselves with their ridiculous FTP, the BCCI's stance on DRS, Indian pitches etc. So the IPL really shouldn't be a cause for worry. It's simply doing what it does best - entertaining billions of fans in India and the world for 2 months with some pure T20 goodness.

Even after winning the IPL why is KKR depriving Kolkata of two home matches and going to Ranchi ??? This is bizarre......

Posted by A.J.KnightRider on (December 21, 2012, 17:21 GMT)

@ here2rock, according to rules the city of the IPL winner gets to host the final of next season. CSK won in 2010 and 2011 so 2011 and 2012 finals were in Chennai. So when KKR won in 2012, it was obvious that Kolkata would host the 2013 final. There's no politics in this....
