Rahmat Wali, who was part of Afghanistan's national team between 2001 and 2006, has been killed in a raid by international troops on his home in the eastern province of Khost.
Nowroz Mangal, the current Afghanistan captain, confirmed Wali's death to AFP. "Foreign troops attacked Rahmat Wali's home last night [August 26]. They locked him up in a room and used poison gas and then a hand grenade. He was found dead today [on August 27]," Mangal said. "He had no links to Taliban or any other opposition. He was a great player. His death is a big loss for Afghans and the sports community."
The US-led coalition and the separate NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, which together have about 70,000 troops in Afghanistan, didn't confirm their involvement in the alleged incident, but Arsala Jamal, the provincial governor for Khost, said Wali had been killed by foreign troops. Jamal, though, refused to provide any further details to AFP.
