Pakistan v South Africa in UAE 2010 October 8, 2010

Misbah-ul-Haq appointed Test captain

213

Misbah-ul-Haq has been appointed Pakistan's captain for the two-Test series against South Africa in Abu Dhabi in November. He becomes the fourth man, after Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi and Salman Butt, to lead Pakistan in Tests in 2010 alone, and the decision completes a remarkable and typically Pakistani comeback; earlier this year, after the Australia tour, he had been dropped from all formats of the game. In July, he was contemplating retirement.

Instead, he will now lead a 15-man squad which includes Mohammad Sami, opener Taufeeq Umar, Danish Kaneria - each of them recalled - and a first time Test call-up for Asad Shafiq, who impressed in his debut ODI series against England recently.

There are signs that the decision hasn't pleased everyone involved with selection of the squad. When asked about the reasons behind the appointment, Mohsin Khan, chief selector, told ESPNcricinfo only that "the selection committee has nothing to do with the appointment of the captain." He refused to comment about the squad.

For now, however, the main focus will be on the 36-year-old Misbah who has, over the years, never quite managed to nail down a long-term position in any Pakistan side.

Since making his Test debut in 2001, he has played only 19 Tests and the majority of those came after 2007, when he returned to the international stage after a four-year gap. Over the next year or so, Misbah enjoyed his most productive period, scoring two Test hundreds on a successful tour of India. But a run of just three half-centuries in his last 15 Test innings - despite decent returns in the limited-overs formats - resulted in his exclusion in favour of younger options.

Though the decision is surprising, as one selector told ESPNcricinfo, it has been compelled on a board short of serious options. Shahid Afridi, who was retained as ODI and T20 captain, retired from Test cricket after a one-Test return as captain in England. Salman Butt, who succeeded him and impressed, is currently suspended for his alleged role in the spot-fixing scandal that rocked the summer tour. Ijaz Butt's feud with the man who has twice walked away from the captaincy, Younis Khan, continues to rule out the latter's involvement. Yousuf was the only other credible option within the side, but after leading Pakistan to seven international losses in Australia, has not been considered again.

"Who else is there right now?" the selector said. "We'll have to wait and see how it goes of course but Misbah has plenty of domestic experience as a captain to back him up at least."

Misbah has led Pakistan once, in an Asia Cup ODI win against India when he stood in for Shoaib Malik. He was impressive both as captain and batsman in that match, during a period in which he was Malik's official deputy, and was considered by some in the team management as a potential captain. He has plenty of leadership experience domestically to draw on, having led his departmental side Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

The board also announced on Friday their decision to retain Afridi as the limited-overs captain of Pakistan. Though the ODI and Twenty20 squads had been announced for the series on Thursday, the board did not initially name a captain. This led to speculation that Afridi might not be retained, the board claiming that the appointments were done on a series-by-series basis.

An official told ESPNcricinfo, however, that the delay came about due to the chairman's concerns about Afridi's role. "Afridi didn't get a very good report on his leadership in England from the team management," the official said. "That, and then some of his public comments recently have not impressed the board. Ultimately though it has been decided to give him another opportunity."

The series with South Africa takes in two Twenty20s, five ODIs and two Tests.

Test squad: Imran Farhat, Taufeeq Umar, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah ul Haq (capt), Umar Akmal. Azhar Ali, Saeed Ajmal, Danish Kaneria, Abdur Rehman, Zulqarnain Haider, Umar Gul, Tanvir Ahmed, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Tanvir (subject to fitness).

Why is there no Mohd. Hafeez in the test squad? We all know he can't play T20. The PCB select him for the formats he is not capable of playing and do not select him for the format he is suitable for. This is a big joke. Also no Wahab Riaz in the ODI squad. Why Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar still playing? Why is Azhar Ali only playing tests? PCB do not think and neither do they take their jobs seriously. Any way why everyone is wanting Younis as captain. That Younis that has been sitting on the bench for Surrey? Misbah was best choice. Well done one good decision!!!

The only viable choice was Kamran; he was therefore sacked from the team. Being appointed captain of Pakistan seems a bit like a knock on the door at 2am by the Gestapo or KGB. The great thing about Misbah is that he is even more anonymous than Salman Butt-largely already forgotten- and should blend into the shadows nicely at a moment's notice. i wonder if Younis Khan is in hiding somewhere. Try the Arctic, Younis. They won't get that far.

oh come on folks, what else were you expecting ? Have Umar Akmal as the captain ? At least Misbah "looks" like a captain... Although I must say they should have given Zulqarnain a shot at captaincy, he atleast has the cricketing spirit and it wouldn't be surprising too, given Pakistan cricket's idiosyncrasies ! But I am sure "seniors" of the pak team would not have been too happy about it. Yousuf would probably cry all day if he were asked to play under a younger player !

lets be very fair in analyzing the situation here.

    misbah is made captain because;

PCB has rift with Younis(matter should be resolved), Yousuf is not at all a good captain, shoaib malik is out of form and had issues with players, shahid afridi got retired from tests, butt is going through the allegations of betting, shoaib akhtar is not mature enough to be a captain. who else is remaining???

you guys want omer akmal or fawad alam to be named captain of tests?? we have no choice. experience has no alternate. misbah is fit, mentally tough and have a clean record.

Yes, ejaz butt should be replaced, but not replaced with people in waiting list like arif abbasi, touqir zia etc as they received same kind of criticism in the past. Media needs a Villon always, PCB chairman always becomes a Villon if team does not play well, i mean the time media gives to Ejaz butt is almost the same as of prime minister. media lobbies for players as well as management.

I am glad Taufeeq Umar has been recalled. Imran Farhat, Imran Nazir, Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed have been given so many chances, they have been persisted with time and again. Taufeeq Umar never got a recall. I am glad he did. He still has a test average of close to 40 which most of the Pakistani top line doesn't.

Our bowling is week. I do not see an attacking test bowler in the line up apart from Sami. Lets hope for the best.

Then poor losers like yasir hameed and asim kamal just arent selected cuz they have no backing, purchee power regins supreme, thts why we have to tolerate players like mohd hafeez (who i think shahid afridi is impressed thts why hes in the team)

  • SABD on October 9, 2010, 11:20 GMT

Wow...the trend continues. During the next ODI series that Pakistan plays Afridi will suddenly discover that his ODI avg of 23 is too low and therefore he should retire from ODIs tool! Misbah will then captain for the rest of the series. At the end of the series, Misbah will be dropped due to 'poor form' and 'inability to guide the side to victories'. After a few more such episodes of the PCB Comedy Show we may see Mohammed Aamir leading Pakistan in the World Cup...lol.

For the first time in the history of international cricket, a player not only gets recalled but is made captian of the team! The PCB has really made a mockery of pakistan cricket now. Ridiculous

  • gamespplplay on October 9, 2010, 7:17 GMT

Misbah might turn out to be a good choice. He has the grit and character and seems unruffled on field. Either way it is desperately vital that Pakistan (Intl) cricket get back in good shape and put these spotted miseries behind them. Pakistan has always had a great and competitive team and are great to watch. I think Afridi should play test cricket - he has a lot to offer as a player.

  • Khan_Asad on October 9, 2010, 7:05 GMT

HAHAHAHAH, despite being a Pakistan fan, i could not have a straight face after reading this article. I suspect, after the series against SA, I would not be surprised if they make Danish Kaneria as the new captain =P

  • on October 9, 2010, 6:48 GMT

We have always criticised PCB, but for a moment lets look at the options available. The first choice captain is out due to corruption charges. Younis has walked away from captaincy and after disagreements with the board is not ready to talk with authorities. Shahid has himself ruled him out of tests. Yousaf had failed miserably and proved himself incapable of the job. Now do we want board to nominate Azhar ali or Umer Akmal as a captain? A captain does not just have to lead the team he has to talk to media and so many other stakeholders. He should have good communication skills and reasonable personality along with being a good player. Right now only Misbah has two of the three credentials. Others dont have just one of the three requisites which I mentioned. So despite the fact that he is not best choice, he is the only choice at the moment.

  • rajaindian on October 9, 2010, 6:28 GMT

hi this s the pathetic situation of pak............ being so many cricketers they r struggling to find a leader.............what does misbah has done for the team..........making him as a captain in his return to national side at 36.......... it shows the about pak cricket..............PAK CRICKET IS ALL OVER........if this a situation then everyone playing in domestic cricket will be given captain for every new series................

  • XooX on October 9, 2010, 6:23 GMT

Misbah should not be complacent..There is still a month to go for the series to begin. If he doesn't impress the selectors by then, he could be sacked and dropped..

  • on October 9, 2010, 6:22 GMT

Younis Khan is the only respected player in Pakistan. He should have got the captaincy.

  • on October 9, 2010, 6:17 GMT

Surely, Younis Khan is a class act having the similar weight of what Mohammad Yousuf has and ofcourse it does make huge difference in the balance of the side when these two Ys are in the team, in addition to Misbah who has talent but sufferering from lack of consistency. I think giving captaincy to Younus or Yousuf is out of debate as both will feel unconfortable in each other's leadership, on the other side I guess both of them in fact all should feel confortable in both leaders (Misbah & Afridi's) leadership in Test, ODIs & T20s respectively. But I still feel something missing in ODI & T20 team as well as Test team, such as in ODIs/T20s you should bring Imran Nazir in place of Imran Farhat and in Tests Asim Kamal should be in. Most important thing all should be united and all should deliver to get results in their favor. Best of Luck.

  • Ehaan on October 9, 2010, 6:11 GMT

@kingkarthik I agree with you on that but return of Misbah is shame on cricket. Now his name will be written with Pakistanis Captain most of them great cricters as Kardar, Hanif M. Mushtaq M. Imran K. Jawed M. Inzamam and I dont know where Misbah stands with them.....

  • Ehaan on October 9, 2010, 6:04 GMT

Read cricinfo prifile of Misbah: "An orthodox batsman with reasonable technique, Misbah-ul-Haq caught the eye with his unflappable temperament in the tri-nation one-day tournament in Nairobi in 2002, scoring two fifties in three innings, including one in the final against Australia. But before Pakistan could hail him as a possible middle-order mainstay, Misbah's form slumped - he didn't manage a single 20-plus score in three Tests against Australia and was duly dumped. Pakistan's abysmal World Cup campaign - and the wholesale changes to the team in its aftermath - gave Misbah another chance to redeem himself, but he did little of note in the limited opportunities he got." If I was PCB chairman I will put restriction on players like Misbah to enter in international cricket event, and why would I do that because player like him, are stopping the real talents to rise and shine. For God sackhe is over 36 and all of his career he made only two centuries not to mention that on dead rubber.

  • Ehaan on October 9, 2010, 5:56 GMT

@ hamzakhanniazi you really want Pakistan not to have any respect in the world,. South Africa's Captain is Greame Smith and how Misbah will look standing in front of him....a joke... an ironic... a pathetic comparison... ha ha

  • arkahn on October 9, 2010, 5:52 GMT

We being the circket lovers highly condemn the selection of Misbah as test captain. PCB may be considered his domestic performance rather than to his international performance. The test format is 5 days match it is not a short format match of T20 & ODI. During the five days test match a Captain must be aggressive in field and he must perform to lead the team from front. During the prevailing conditions Yunus Khan is the best choice as Test Captain. The PCB and its authorities are being requested in their own interest please resolve all matters with Yunus Khan and assign him captaincy job. PCB is being advised in their own interest to review their decision. Otherwise the PCB big boss Ejaz Butt and Mohsin Khan will be solely responsible for any debacle and baklash in U.A.E.

  • Ehaan on October 9, 2010, 5:41 GMT

To make Misbah as a pakistan side's captain is the worst decision in the cricket history. Whatever the outcome would be..it will be irrelevent, If pakistan win every single match of the series still Misbah is not a justification of that.

I don't understand why everyone is talking about Younis Khan as captain, as he himself leaves captaincy, he is always problemtic either for himself or for whole team, why u people want to give him another chance. Let him furnish his business of photography. I am not in favor of Mr. Butt but younis himslef has created this kind of situtation. And I think Misbah is a wise decision but he has to deliver now, Imran Farhat inclusion is controversial. and Sami should be a part of ODIs instead of Tests. Suspended trio is not cosidered at all, even if they will get clearence from ICC, not been able to take part in remaining games, this is ridiculous.

Now seriously, what are PCB thinking, they are making a joke of selecting A National Team which is going to play International Level sport. When will Pakistan get Rid of Bumbling Butt, just because he doesn't like Younis Khan,he has kept our such a good player out of the team.It means his likes and dislikes are more importaint than the country itself.Come on!!

  • nzcricket174 on October 9, 2010, 2:23 GMT

The only person who can lead this team is Younis Khan. I am saying this from a neutral perspective (as I am from NZ). What has he done wrong? I am sure the selectors would want him available for selection. If he had done something wrong, I'm sure the public would have been notified. Then again, it could just be showing the weakness and incapabilities of the PCB.

(look all the controversies.... there should be some truth to it not every blame is lie.)They play for themselves not for their country, they do noth have any character no personality, they do not give any respect to anyone specially there FANS.

Is it possible that Misbah could be the Non-Playing Captain? Why there is no news about Younus? Has he retired? If Misbah could be called back why not Younus? What has younus done to draw the wrath of Mr. Butt? Can any one throw some light?

  • on October 9, 2010, 0:47 GMT

misbah is good selection for the captaincy in tests. to me there are these problems with test selection: hammad azam, m. irfan & fawad alam should have been there instead of t. umar, s. tanvir & imran farhat (maybe). in these hot conditions they may have to go with 3 spin attack & for that they need sombody to share the new ball with the only pacer. besides they need a batting allrounder who can bowl m. pace for long term maybe hammad is that.... s. tanir is a good odi & t20 bowler but he is no so good a test player instead irfan could be a nice option in tests becoz of his height he should be given other chance becoz in the given 2 him he mostly bowld to strauss who is master in playing short of length balls........ fawad alam though not that good in technique has a temperment that suits test cricket he has tendancy to play long innings which is what other players in this team lack......omer akmal hould not be played in tests untill wc where he is an impt player....................

  • Ehaan on October 9, 2010, 0:42 GMT

This guy is biggest burden on cricket, there are lots of better cricketers are in pakistan and they have never given chance to get in the team , I am very sure he is very resourseful person in Pakistan getting in the team every single time he failed us. he has given so many oppurtunies to prove himself to be in the team but result is zero, he doesn't have varieties of shots as he should have. Most of the time Pakistani team needs most in the late middle order and he play in that order, Misbah cannot perform when team is under pressure, he has never close the game, may be he is good at domestic cricket let him play that. I am pakistani and suppert good cricket wherever it is, I always admire good cricketers beyond boundries and it is always hurt my feeling when cricket is play by politics. Please I request Pakistan Government Officials don't mix cricket with their own agendas, this is the only enjoyment poor pakistani people have don't take it away from them.

He had gr8 record in test as well and Younus Khan is best captain for Pakistan for test. We should include these two players in our test squad as well.

Many legends have been featured in the series, but it it seems rather hard to believe imran khan's contributions havent been honored in the series thus far. Hence i find myself sending this request to you, Osman, through this article that perhaps you convince the senior editors of the site to feature imran's achievements soon. ty

Imran Farhat selection and Mishbah Selection not a fair selection. Ijaz Butt should resign ....Mohsin Hasan Khan alos. resign as a Cheif Selector.

  • Zakai on October 8, 2010, 20:13 GMT

We dont understand Pakistan selection procedure. Who is cheif selector? We don't understand? Why PCB appointed Mohsin Hassan Khan, as a cheif selector? In England and Australia Series , Mohsin Hassand Khan Announced we will give chance to yongster, and continue with them...? Now, what happend in this series? We got 2 Old players, Misbah and Imran Farhat, Both comes through some one's other wise both players dont have a place to play in a team. Waqar Younus wants to grrom youngster. We, dont understand why they lefted Azhar Ali and Shazaib. Now, I suppose Fawad Alam, Asad Shafiq and Umar Akmal will take a presure, becouse they will think, one of us will not be in the playing 11 becouse Mishbah come. I think, we should give chance in middle order all 3 youngster along with Muhammad Yousuf, This is the best time for them to groom..but........Dont understand our PCb Chairman policy Ijaz But. I think, he should resign at this post...

  • usman_nile1994 on October 8, 2010, 19:24 GMT

It seems to be a weaker side.....without Aamer/Asif bowling also weaker

  • on October 8, 2010, 19:05 GMT

again i would say the same thing about the team...very similar to the test team sent to england...doubtful opening batsmen who are neither aggressive nor patient nor talented...the failures of imran farhat are almost legendry and bringing in taufik umar smells of the general phobia that the PPP government has.....a hodge podge middle order but more experienced..dont confuse the batsmen on how to bat ...if u are weak in one area dont play in that zone... play the ball not the betting or the bookie...play into the gaps..be aggressive on the on side...no need to give catching practic ...the bowlers talented but mediocre...the way intikhab has managed/coached requires confident batsmen who will go out and play for the team under the conditions...these are not such confident batsmen but the south african bowling might be better suited to them than the english even though the south africans have good bowlers too...and i think selling and buying wickets is counterproductive...play the game...

I totally agree with Zahid Aslam. Someone who doesn't even deserve to be in test squad, for some reason has been made captain. This is totally Pakistan for you. Sorry to see Farhat being selected again and again. The guy is a total failure and needs to be shown the doors long time ago. Also, the selection of Umar Akmal and Mohammed Yousuf is questionable after a miserable trip to England. Is the squad selected on performance or personal preferences. Again Faisal Iqbal, Anwer Ali, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Younis Khan are excluded from the squad for unknown reasons. I fear the worst for Pakistani cricket team for this series. I can only say please open your eyes selectors.

  • on October 8, 2010, 17:11 GMT

  • Toescrusher on October 8, 2010, 17:09 GMT

There is some positive in this selection it indicates present cricket bosses finally realizing too many changes were detrimental. Not only as cricket fan but as a nation we need to learn not to make too many changes strong team is a combination of more senior, mid level & very few juniors provided fair selection. With full support it takes about 6 years for a player to become match winner or hit the peak e.g. Saleem, Anwar…Once merit player is chosen board & fans must display patience unfortunately this is how Pakistan produces match winners. This selection concludes players shouldn't have discarded at the 1st place had the players had continuous support of board & critics they would've earned the match winners status by now. Misbah is a good choice for captain better than Yousuf anyway. Looks like we are learning - learning to respect & value potential match winners of all regions Media deserves credit for keeping PCB on check we must support media & make them match winners as well.

  • on October 8, 2010, 17:06 GMT

I am Indian, but I love to watch India and Aus play against Pak cos these 3 teams in my opinion are the most enjoyable teams to watch, teams with the most flair, aggression and passion. When conspiracy theorists blame everything on Indians for Pakistan cricket's ills, it hurts Indian and Pakistani cricket fans, who get deprived of watching exciting contests between a mercurial yet very talented Pakistan cricket team, a stable and talented Pak team is good for world cricket, but I'm sorry PCB is misleading and ruining the dream for Pak fans and cricket fans around the world. Younis Khan should be back to save Pak cricket.

  • short_cover on October 8, 2010, 17:02 GMT

I guess this is as good a team as we can have at this time. However, what boggles is the continued omission of Asim Kamal. The guy has one of the best averages in Test (37.8) where Imran Farhat is around 33 and Salmat But was only 30. I mean other than Yousuf/Younis, there is no other batsmen to even consider. He has memorable innings agaist S. Africa as well as India so may be he just doesn't have the 'push' to get in. Secondly, there is no other captain/test player in pakistan right now than Younis Khan. Just bcz this Butt guy doesn't like him, he keeps getting overlooked. This is absurdity at its peak. Younis is a direct kind of guy and he has given Butt his mind which is why he is out, and will probably stay out until Butt's there. I really dont care much what happens to ODI, let alone T20, but you cant take a Test lightly. Misbah probably should have been given chances earlier but Younis is the only captain for Pakistan right now.

  • abhinavpraneet on October 8, 2010, 16:51 GMT

well, on one hand, it is sad to see the state of pakistan cricket, on the other, one can't help but laugh at the selection and appointment of captains. It seems more than appointing a captain they are looking for the next whipping boy! the selection seems less on the merit of the candidate and more on the availability and automatic exclusion of some of the others in question!

what a mockery of responsibility! looks like pakistan cricket got the units of captaincy rotation all messed up, other countries change every 4-6 years, they changes every 4-6 months! guess they keep their shirts longer than they do their captains!

  • hank on October 8, 2010, 16:40 GMT

With all the young talent we have ,what difference does it make to send a washed out out of shape old players to become Captains of the team, Pakistan Cricket needs two year program with atlest seven to eight young players on the team for every game and series regardless of the results , let the players become friends , let them gel together , it seems we still have some old Players politics still on , for a long time , I have been use to seeing for the last two years of their majority of loosing performances that I am willing to see new young faces with new descend Management and pure effort in playing the sport and also play with pride ...whether they loose every game for next two years ,then atleast I will understand that they lost because of not enough experince then I will wait for the right team to show up one day and become our Country's Pride ...

  • hank on October 8, 2010, 16:32 GMT

Dear Osman Bhai , You have written another great column , but my question to you Sir is that with you writting for so long ,surely you must have some connection directly in the PCB management , where you can share our frustrations with them as well give them some good advise, what I mean is that here we go again after Wasim Bari stepping down from Chairman Position of PCB , we really have not had any solid management that can atleast hold it's decision for more than a series, there is always embarrassing moments in our Cricket that one wonders about their competency to handle their positions in the board, I would really like you to send this message to the right people and really Osman Bhai enough is enough....

  • on October 8, 2010, 15:22 GMT

At least Misbah doesn't have the curse of being labelled 'The Old Man' by commentators, as Yousuf has been. He's an active field member and can actually run around. which comes in useful when you want to talk to your players. He's also a successful domestic captain, and has been a vice-captain internationally, so no harm in seeming him as the captain here.

Afridi is doing what Imran once did. Asserting his authority on the team and to the world through the press. If that is what you call 'unimpressive public comments', then Ijaz Bhai, grow a pair. The board crucified Imran, but he stood up time and again, and now he is a level below diety in Pakistan. I can see Afridi reaching that if he keeps this up.

PCB have to realise that everyone doesn't have to like the captain. Their current solution is to make the entire team from one province, so that by having a Punjabi captain, there will be mutual assent. Wrong way to go...

  • chuck.of.all.trades on October 8, 2010, 14:33 GMT

Don't worry if your favourite Pakistan cricketer isn't selected. Chances are, he'll be made skipper for the next tour. Or a coach. Or be given a lifetime achievement award. Or be knighted. Or be made chairman of selectors.

  • on October 8, 2010, 14:33 GMT

The player who has no place in the team for last many months & at the verge of retirement has been appointed as captain. Haha ha The PCB belongs to Pakistan Govt. And the Pakistan Govt is also a bundle of jugglers, so we can't expect any different thinking. Zardari is the king of jungle, so as Mr. Butt. They have no sympathy with Pakistan & Pakistani nation. We may see more new captain for the comings series like, Imran farhat, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul etc.

  • on October 8, 2010, 14:30 GMT

What is wrong with the PCB, especially fat-ass Butt. Why he is letting personal conflicts get in way of selecting a team. No Younis Khan, no Malik. Pakistani player should start to take WI player route, dont sign central contract, and just go play T20.

  • guesswhat555 on October 8, 2010, 14:30 GMT

    What does PCB stands for?

    A. PCB = Pathetic Cricket Board B. PCB = Pakistan Crook Board C. PCB = Pakistan Crazy Board D. PCB = Poor Cricket Board E: All of the above

Pakistan cricket is full of surprises... Misbah back in the squad and became captain even though he retired from all forms of cricket few months back and even though he criticized selectors on media about selection...Whats the fault of Younis Khan???? PCB is full of mystery and will remain forever...

  • satanswish on October 8, 2010, 14:27 GMT

Can someone please confirm if Misbah is fifth captain for Pakistan (Tests) this year?

  • dmqi on October 8, 2010, 14:19 GMT

Better than the crooked Malik, crazy Afridi ,the ball biter, no leadership quality Yusuf. Yes, Pak did not have a choice as the biggest junk Ijaj Butt ( got slap in his face by the British) is in charge of PCB, kept Y Khan out, only person with ability to lead. I wonder if that country has any administration. Thanks God we got out of them in 1971.

Mohsin Khan openly said the selection committee does not have anything to do with the selection of the Captain. Then what the hell you are doing there? Get out and follow Iqbal Qasism. How the big fat Intikhab is back under this shameless administration? You the circus team go on a world tour with Ijaz Butt as your capatin. People might come to see you all not as cricketers but as stupid jokers. The media will come with 100 cameras focus on you, you will get publicity.

  • on October 8, 2010, 14:18 GMT

PCB's favorite quote for the past 2 months: "They (Butt, Asif & Amir) are innocent until proven guilty"......PCB's favorite quote for the past 2 years: "He is the captain until dropped or sacked or banned"......I am sure becoming a pakistan cricket captain is no longer a dream in that nation. Anyone from out of the blue can turn up and lead. Mr. Misbah has been picked in the side and made captain coz he has a lot of domestic captaincy experience!!! Surely, no bookie would be interested to bet on if this captaincy will last beyond this series. Wonder how much more drama is there in Pak cricket's script (in this year atleast).

  • on October 8, 2010, 13:46 GMT

At least one good news....if somebody can lead this team, then its shahid afridi...but still dissapointing younis khan ist not there, the next dissapointment ist, if you dont pick younis you MUST pick shoaib malik because of his experience....i hope they can get rid of ijaz butt before the world cup....he is the main treat to the team....good luck

  • on October 8, 2010, 13:44 GMT

This is sad. Somebody who doesn't even get selected in the 15-man squad anymore has been promoted to captain. It's clear that in Pakistan, the captain is not selected based on merit, but based on who is less contravercial. I think Misbah is not our 20th captain in the last 10 years?

  • mrcruizy on October 8, 2010, 13:31 GMT

the only person who i realy wanted in test squad was Zulqurnain Haidar... rest is just a joke..why on earth is misbah back in the squad..on one hand when it comes to Yunas khan they talk about FUTURE of pakistan and now on other hand they are appointing a person who is 2 years older than yunas..what logic is this? yunas played more amount of cricket than misbah this year as he played county cricket as well.. and why the hell is umar akmal still in the squad? they guy is still under performer..only one good debut tour and still in the squad where every one has been changed and rotated..this guy needs a break.. talent and young, true, but he does need a break other wise another player is on its way to the depth of no-coming-back of pakistan cricket..i doubt sami's selection. it clearly shows that this selection is forced on the selectors because a few months back there was the karachi-lahore players/qouta scene and just to avoid it this time, i strongly belelieve its forced on them. ALAS

It can't get worse then this, or is it? Misbah as captain, who is so selfish that whenever he is batting, he never thought that it is his responsibility to guide the innings, it is always tother's responsibility as far as he is concerned, and he is made captain......? But again, what difference does it make. Bottom line is, he is a useless captain of a useless team. who cares?

I fully agree with the selection, in the absence of Younis, Misbah is the best choice for test match. Very mature and has a good head over his shoulders. Much better than S. But or Malik. I appreciate selectors for this.

PCB is a joke. At one moment you are not sure of your place in the squad in any format of the game, you are then sacked and are considering retirement, but then you get made the captain of the national team. Wow. Only in Pakistan. Good to see Sami and Sohail Tanvir back though!

How will Ijaz Butt, the head psychiatrist and leading obsessive compulsivie ward off a disbelieving outside community? How will new inmate Misbah cope with this astonishing hospital regime. And in charge of patient discipline good old Inty. Wil hel be the one to get the lobotomy? Whako on diown Pakistan!!!

  • captanshah on October 8, 2010, 11:33 GMT

I am in doubt really that in our cricket board is there any single person with a head inside. Its look like a group of foolish peoples with no knowledge of the words Honor, Pride and dignity. They don't care whatever the outcomes of there foolsih decisions, rather they just seemed to be fond of making decisions without any sense. Misbah who was not in the team and even was thinking about retirement suddenly comes into the seen and becomes the Captain of a struglling team. Whenever a team or a nation gets under crises they look for a leader with some sort of influence, but what we always look at... Take my word let this management to work for a six more months and the pakistan team will be at the bottom of all the tables.

  • Sohaib25 on October 8, 2010, 11:25 GMT

This is yet another one BIG RIDICULOUS decision by PCB. Man who is 36 years old, who is not worthy of being part of playing 11 becomes captain. Shows the height of incompetency of PCB. feel for heartbroken youngesters out there who missed out this time. Anyways I dont expect much from this team. Wonder when PCB will start to plan the future rather than just planing for present.

I want to request Yunus Khan, that please dont waste time here and go to play anywhere else until this guy is removed by will of God. Pakistan cricket is being run by a fool. May Allah save cricket of Pakistan from him. We have never never respected our great players and treated like PCB owns them. Mr. Butt shame on you, shame on you.

  • TimmyF_23 on October 8, 2010, 11:06 GMT

Pakistan had a real opportunity to build for the future here. However the have missed a trick. What they should of done was look at a good young talented cricketer to take them through the next colourful chapter and beyond in Pakistan cricket. The best pick would have been Umar Akmal. I know he is really young but he has been around a while, and honestly his the best man for the job so age shouldnt matter. Although the PCB would of had to back him long term & not just throw him out when things go wrong. The added responsibility will also curb his erratic stroke play. He would of been attacking and exciting as a captain, much like his batting. Instead Pakistan have gone for a option that will not take them forward. Picking a player as captain that wasnt even in the test team is ridiculous. Pakistan have thrown away a real opportunity to be exciting and move forward out of this dark period, and talk would of been about cricket not scandels. Oh well their loss.

I dont have words to express my disappointment and frustration.

In my view Umar Akmal deserved to be Pakistan captain as he has the stamina to fight for Pakistan till the end and he plays not for himself but for Pakistan!!!!!

  • kingkarthik on October 8, 2010, 10:51 GMT

Ha ha, please ICC, we need Pakistan to play cricket. They find new ways of embarrassing themselves. It is hilarious. I mean, Misbah is an old, over the hill player. He was kicked out of the team because he could not perform, now he sneeks back into the team and the reward is to be captain. In fact he was cited as being a bad influence who poisoned the team I personally think that Younis Khan represented the last ray of hope for Paki to develop themselve and shed the history of being in the "backwaters" attitude and behaviour wise. Alas, powerful forces who have likewise ruined the country of Pakistan can't stand to see liberal and modern personalities such as Younis. They want to be in the stone age. I guess that Paki board should get ready to hand the captaincy to someone else as Misbah will a disaster... i wonder if it is an attempt to finish Misbah once and for all. A poisoned chalise? Paki fans up for a conspiracy theory? After your'll do like to say everything is a conspiracy :)
