Junaid Khan out of Asia Cup

63

Junaid Khan, the Pakistan fast bowler, who sustained a knee injury during the recently-concluded England series, will not be available for the Asia Cup when the new selection committee chaired by Iqbal Qasim sits tomorrow to pick the squad. PCB sources have indicated that Junaid is likely to be out of action for three weeks.

ESPNcricinfo understands that Junaid picked up the injury during training ahead of the second Twenty20 in Dubai. MRI scans revealed a fracture of the patella. Junaid had played a total of three matches on the tour - one Test, one ODI and one Twenty20 - and accounted for just one wicket.

Junaid, 21, who graduated from the same Under-19 batch that Mohammad Amir came from, is also a left-arm fast bowler but his fledgling career has been hurt by injuries in the last few months. Incidentally Junaid was picked for the England series after he had freshly recovered from the abdominal tear he picked during the ODI series against Sri Lanka last year, which ruled him out for six weeks.

If Pak selectors will not get over Younis & Misball, they will continue to languish at the bottom of the table in the ODI format. Now the T20 format is also becoming very important. That is why all teams have started picking different players and different captains in different formats. Only Pak, India & WI teams have same captain in all formats. Since Dhoni is young and good batsman-keeper he is ok. But the others viz Pak & WI are languishing at the bottom of the table.

@ Amire Khan :- Shoeb Akhtar's retirement was hastened by Kamran Akmal and Waqar Younis. In the NZ game when Kami dropped Ross Taylor twice in two deliveries. Akhtar was furious. Any fast bowler will be. After all the fast bowlers put in so much effort in their deliveries. Unconfimed news is that he had a serious scuffle with Kami in the dressing room. Now here Waqar played the villain. He sided with Kamran and banned Akhter from playing the remaining matches. At that time Afridi did not understand how to react and kept quite instead of supporting Akhtar. Afridi further wanted to drop Kamran in the next match, but Waqar got in the way. Afridi still wanted to persist with this decision and wanted to give the gloves to Umar Akmal. But Umar feigned injury. And Afridi was left cornered. Then, in the next series of WI he decided that he will not tolerate the arrogant Waqar any more. And what followed was the spat between Afridi-Waqar. Waqar had to resign.

Far too many injuries at this stage of his career are not doing any good to his career. Like this his career may be over without really taking off. I think he is not looking after his fitness. He will repent later in his life when other younsters will seal the spot and he will be forgotten.

Junaid, I am sure is a good bowler but his performance was less than stellar in UAE. The list of fast bowlers to play for Pakistan since the 1980's is long and impressive. There were a number of fine fast bowlers who never got the opportunity to play because competition was so tough. Looking at the quality of our pacers as of late it appears that the factory is not longer able to produce the same quality of fast bowlers. This shows short sightedness on the part of PCB for not have groomed young players and not doing enough to help cricket at the grass root level. Australia, England and South Africa (not necessarily in that order) have fantastic fast bowling departments. Dare I say that India despite their poor showing in Australia have discovered some good quick bowlers to finally have some bragging rights. The debacle of Asif and Amir is not longer a valid excuse and it truly needs to be in the rearview mirror. Pakistan needs to move on and instead of living on our past laurels P

Nazir deserves the position in the squad. How come Misbah can play when he was/is responsible for losses. Nazir was runout in the finals against India while as Misbah was responsible foe the loss. Believers never fell in the same ditch twice. Does pak cricket depend on Misbah? It will be a crime to play Misbah in ODIs or T20 s. Wake up please? He is a looser and will be a looser. He is no better than ponting who was droped from odi squad. It is better to lose the match in 10 overs than loosing in the last over by playing the foolish shots and breaking the hearts of billions of fans. Select the squad per merit i,e players in form. Whats wrong in playing Mahmood and razzak. If kalis can play why cant they? Not a fair selection.

I was never in favor of hafeez opening batting, as he is not a class player. Bring back Shahzad along with Azhar Mahmood and Razzaq. Pak should focus on bringing back either tall Irfan Or riaz so it can boost there bowling attack too. Unluckily Gul is out of form and has always been expensive against India.

There is no dearth of talent in Pakistan, Alhamodolillah with youngsters like Mohammad Talha, Sadaf Hussain, Bilawal Bhatti and even veterans such as Mohammad Sami. Even batsmen like Afaq Raheem, Haris Sohail and Fawad Alam; all have 40+ averages at first class level, and are good options to build team around. Having a 40+ average at domestic level isn't a mean feat; a fact reflected by Younis Khan's stats with similar averages at both levels. M Sami is a wonderful talent, his strike rate in this year's pentangular cup was the lowest and he took 17 wickets in 2 matches. He is also very fit and has genuine pace which is always an asset. Unfortunately no other youngster has that kind of pace in Pakistan so he needs to be given regular chances at international level.

Pakistan should pick M.Talha as he performed well against England in one of the side games. They should also pick Sadaf Hussain in place of Cheema. This time around HAMMAD AZAM SHOULD BE A PERMANENT PART OF THE PLAYING 11 and HE SHOULD BOWL TOO, AS HE WAS BALLING AT 84 to 85 MPH IN THE SEMIFINAL OF BPL WHICH IS ENOUGH FOR AN ALLROUNDER.NO RANA NAVED AND NO SAMI .

ONLY JUNAID AND MALIK will be replaced. They won't change Farhat as that will discredit Ilyas. So guys no Ahmad Shehzad or Usman Sallahuddin. I just wonder if they can play Umar Akmal as wicketkeeper then why not Kamran Akmal, he is at least a better keeper among these two.

  • pkcricfan101 on March 3, 2012, 2:31 GMT

The new chief selector said that he is going to pick cricketer's according to merit...well 22 year old Sadaf Hussain has picked up 148 wickets in 29 First class matches including 4 ten-wicket hauls and 13 five-wicket hauls. What more merit do they require!!? He should be the replacement for Junaid. Also consider dropping hafeez down the order and bringing in ahmed shehzad at the top. Drop Farhat and Shoaib Malik they got enough chances.

  • Zahidsaltin on March 3, 2012, 0:49 GMT

I will go for a last chance to Mohammad Sami knowing that his performances in ODIs were never bad. My would like to see Sami, Talha and big Irfan playing a match each. Can some one work on Irfan to make him a good T20 bowler before worldcup. Those who are asking for Sadaf to be included should know that even Azhar Mahmood would get as many wickets as Sadaf does, if playing on Pindi wicket. Lets look at his states while playing at other veneus. His speed and his performances on wickets other than Pindi are disappointing. Sami & Talha are the fastest bowlers in Pakistan. Gul should be rested in this tour. My team is 1) Ahmad Shehzad 2) Hafiz 3) Kamran Akmal 4) Younis Khan 5) Misbah 6) Umar Akmal 7) Afridi 8) Abdul Razaq 9) Umar Gul 10) Ajmal 11) Talha reserves: Sami, Usman Salahuddin 3) Hammad Azzam 4) Asad Shafiq

  • TestDaBest on March 2, 2012, 22:41 GMT

Sports4Youth I agree with you and even though it looks all doom and gloom but we do have a lot of talent within the domestic teams e.g. khalil, talha, ali imran, imran khan, anwar ali etc. from youngsters and from the oldies especially for t20 cricket we can give chance to the likes of rana and azhar mehmood which will give us longer batting line because they are 100 times better than the useless cheema and wahab riaz.

I dont understand why pak fans on cricinfo keep promoting wahab riaz as he is inconsistent and erratic and pakistan attack cant afford that. He has done nothing significant other than 1 innings each in test and odi.

Also if anyone needs any support it should be sami as he is still quick he has the experience and can be a gr8 fielder as well as a decent tailender again better than many in the team.

  • Desihungama on March 2, 2012, 21:33 GMT

It doesn't matter whether you select Hammad Azam or Talha or any other fast bowlers. Misbah is not going to play them as we saw in matches where Hammad Azam did not bow a single over. He is so opposite to Imran Khan who time and again thrusted young guys to prove themselves whereas Misbah has absolutely no trust or confidence in any of these young player.s What a pity.

  • on March 2, 2012, 21:07 GMT

I think picking Mohammad Sami or Mohammad Khalil would be a step backwards. They should pick pick a younger paceman, who can serve Pakistan for a long time.

  • billbowden311 on March 2, 2012, 20:41 GMT

Shoot, Junaid Khan is a great bowler, but his career is being stuttered by injury, I hope he can recover quickly and start playing, we need a player like him! Pakistan need an all pace attack like Australia, Talha, Junaid, Gul and riaz, reserve cheema for ODI, he is much better in ODI (by the way this is test pace attack), please junaid don't be like ryan harris and waste your career on injury, PLEASE you are a promosing player thank you!

I am a west indian who thoroughly enjoyed the exploits of Mohamed Amir. I've looked at clips of this fast bowler and can come to only one conclusion, Mohamed Amir is the best 'active' fast bowler alive today. It is in the interest of the 'influential countries' to keep Mohamed Amir out of the Pakistan team. Just think with some more maturing what this bowler would have been capable of. We the cricketing fans should start a petition to the ICC for them to reassess the the five year ban on this cricketer. We acknowledge his misdeeds, but they should take into consideration his age, impressionability, ability to fully understand the consequences of his actions, his remorse and the fact that they will show themselves as being an entity of understanding.

  • Talhacroft on March 2, 2012, 16:32 GMT

Rana Naveed, Muhammad Sami or Suhail Tanveer should play as they have performed well in the BPL.

  • on March 2, 2012, 16:31 GMT

Please select new bowlers Like Muhammad Irfan, Anwar Ali or Mohammad Talha in place of Junaid khan and also gave them chance to play in the Asia cup games.

  • on March 2, 2012, 16:24 GMT

misbah is blamming the batting line if recent defeat infact he is more reponsible than every one else... he puts pressure on batsman by playing defensive and keep blocking deliveries at his end... we lost bcoz of his batting in wc semi final, wc t 20 2007, and recent t20 series against england.. he should be sacked first..

  • Love-Pak on March 2, 2012, 16:23 GMT

Muhammad Sami should be given another chance, he has been performing very well on domestic level and also in BPL he is the leading wicket taking bowler. Biased people like Waqr Youis has ruined up Sami's carrier in the past. On domestic level he has proven again and again that when captain put trust on him then he is a good attacking wicket taking bowler. After Shoaib Akhter retired , Sami at present is the fastest bowler in the Pakistan. He is also a handy tail end batsman. Misbah, Malik, Farhat,Azhar and Adnan should not be selected.Afridi should be the Captain.

    Asia Cup Team

    1-M. HAFEEZ 2--NASIR JAMSHAD 3-ASAD SHAFIQ (VICE CAPTAIN) 4-YOUNUS KAHN 5-UMER AKMAL 6-S.AFRIDI (CAPTAIN) 7-HAMMAD AZAM 8-SARFRAZ AHMED (WICKET KEEPEr) 9-MUHAMMAD SAMI 10-UMER GUL 11-SAEED AJMAL

    RESERVES :

SHAHZAIB HASSAN,SHAHZAD AHMED, MUHAMMAD TALHA, ABDUR REHMAN

  • Sports4Youth on March 2, 2012, 16:11 GMT

I hope the selectors dont pick up old failures like Samii, Kamran, S.Malik etc. Iqbal Qasim has promised that it will be a good mix of youth and experience. I hope this time the youth is not made to sit on the bench and that they are given a realistic chance. Also I hope that this time around they will not make the mistake of going with part-time wicket keeper. Hope to see back Sarfraz Ahmed beigng given a proper chance. I am also hoping to see some youngster in the batting like Awais Zia, Ahmed Shehzad, Shehzaid Hassan, Imran Nazir etc. I think in the limited overs game we had enough of Misbah, Younis, S.Malik etc..

  • SwingReverse on March 2, 2012, 16:02 GMT

Why are people asking for Irfan? There are better bowlers on the domestic circuit, including Sadaf, Talha and Anwer Ali like waza1234 pointed out.

  • hakoonj on March 2, 2012, 15:52 GMT

Asad Ali has the best domestic limited overs figures in Pakistan currently, he should seriously be considered.

  • on March 2, 2012, 15:49 GMT

This should be the team for Asia Cup:

    1. Kamran Akmal 2. Hammad Azam 3. Umar Akmal 4. Shahid Afridi 5. Imran Nazir 6. Ahmed Shazhad 7. Misbah (Unfortunately) 8. Mohammad Talha 9. Saeed Ajmal 10. Mohammed Hafeez 11. Anwar Ali 12. Sadaf Hussain 13. Umar Gul 14. Mohammed Khalil 15. Nasir Jamshed

This team will do really well seeing that they played well on the Dhaka pitch in the BPL. PCB should now stop favours and grant players a contract on merit. This team has a mixture of youth and experience and WILL be a definate winner for everyone involved

  • El_Toro_Loco on March 2, 2012, 15:40 GMT

Nothing special here, he's just an ordinary bowler..........

  • Ammade on March 2, 2012, 15:38 GMT

To be honest, Junaid Khan is really a hardworking cricketer but not as talented as some of the other fast bowlers that Pakistan have produced over the years! He is just like Ishant Sharma or Sreesanth, but definitely not like Amir, Wasim Akram, waqar younis, Asif and lee! Injury to him won't affect team Pakistan that much as they are relying heavily on the spinners these days but they have to find some good fast bowlers!

  • kam_uk on March 2, 2012, 15:36 GMT

Rahat Ali is making some waves in domestic cricket isn't he? Apparently he can bowl 90mph -145kph and can swing the ball. Would like to see him in action. Kamran Akmal has been scoring some runs in BPL maybe he could come back but they should not have both brothers in the team, might be a timely reminder for Umar Akmal to get some form as he was poor recently. My 15 man squad 1.A Shehzad 2.Awais Zia 3.Imran Nazir 4. Younis Khan 5. Shafiq 6.Misbah 7. Kamran Akmal (wk) 8. Afridi 9. H Azam 10. M Hafeez 11 Ajmal 11. Gul 12. Riaz 14. Rehman 15.Rahat Ali - will be taking a chance on Kamran's wicket keeping but he brings options to the batting and hopefully he has worked on his keeping.

M Sami for the national team AGAIN..? You must be joking.. How many more chances do you want to give him? You must be related to him to say that. Junaid Khan was totally useless in U.A.E. And even before U.A.E he was injured, we don't need bowlers that keep getting injured (like shoaib akhter, played one match and then got injured for the next 3). Junaid looks an average bowler at best, he bowls too many bad balls to prosper at this level. He is way too over-rated, we need some under-rated "workhorse" (Iike M. Asif was) not a one-trick pony.

  • Raoufy on March 2, 2012, 15:08 GMT

He looked good at first but now I think he needs to recover and tune his bowling in domestic cricket. Whab is also out of form. May be another youngster should be given a chance. We have huge talent in Pakistan. I hope the new selector is a bit more open minded when it comes to selection.

  • Sports4Youth on March 2, 2012, 14:23 GMT

The injury to Junaid is a setback, but not a major setback. It is minor because Junaid is not leading the attack. This article says the Iqbal Qasim and his selection comitee will sit tomorow to finalise the squad for the Asia Cup. I hope the selectorst have noticed Umar Gul's failures in the England series. I hope they have also taken note of the fact that Mohd.Amir is not appealing against the ban, which means he will not be available before 2015. I hope they realise the need of blooding youngsters like Hammand Azam and Mohd.Talha. It is vey surprising to note that since the rise of Sarfaraz Nawaz & Imran Khan, now for the first time Pakistan is facing a dirth of fast bowlers wihich has forced them to totally rely on spinners. It would also be interesting to know about the captainship and the fate of some players like Farhat, S.Malik etc.

I really hope they don't pick Mohammad Sami because that would be a major backward step. We need to try new young bowlers like Mohammad Talha, Anwer Ali and Sadaf Hussain.

Mohammad Sami is a good choice but if they pick him they should let him play few matches so he can get his confidence back, are we going to see Ahmed Shehzad and Imran Nazir back in the team for Asia cup?

pick M.Irfan in place of Junain Khan..

  • rasool92 on March 2, 2012, 14:14 GMT

Add Muhammad Irfan in Asia Cup squad in place of Junaid Khan... He is also a good fast bowler but remain unlucky that he could perform in England.. I think he should be selected...

It may be a blessing in disguise for Junaid. He must learn some tricks of the trade before coming back to the national side.
