Mathews to miss rest of tour due to calf tear

WATCH - Mathews' steady 73

Angelo Mathews' calf tear has ruled him out of the remainder of Australia's tour, while allrounder Thisara Perera and left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan have been released from the Sri Lanka squad for the fifth ODI. In place of these three players, Sri Lanka have drafted in batsmen Upul Tharanga and Niroshan Dickwella, as well as seam-bowling allrounder Dasun Shanaka.

Mathews has not undergone a CT scan for the injury he sustained during the fourth ODI, but the team management has already confirmed he will be unavailable for the remaining ODI and two T20Is. Mathews had hobbled off the field during his innings on Wednesday and, though he returned to bat towards the end of the innings, had been substantially hampered by the injury.

Perera had played all four ODIs as the primary seamer but, although he claimed 3 for 33 in Sri Lanka's sole win, at Khettarama, he has since been less effective. Perera had also been dropped for the England tour, following a long stretch of modest returns. He is effectively being replaced by Shanaka, who had some success in that tour of England and Ireland - he claimed three wickets in the first innings of Test at Headingley, and also took a five-wicket haul in an ODI against Ireland, in Dublin.

Tharanga had also been somewhat effective in England, making a 53 not out and 40 from the lower middle order. Following Dilshan's retirement, the selectors may wish to bat him at the top of the order again, though Dickwella is also a candidate for the opening spot. In his last three List A innings, against England Lions and Pakistan A, Dickwella hit 51, 44, and 60.

Sri Lanka have already lost the ODI series. The final match is set to be played in Pallekele, on Sunday.

Please drop Angelo Matthews, He is the worst player in the side, He cant bat nor can he bowl and his fitness is not good too. Srilanka needs a new captain and some good depth bowlers as well as a few players who are not scared to go after a bowling attack and can hit the bowl through gaps rather than play good shots straight to fielders.

Johanan.col Tharanga should hv been in from 1st ODI After his recent form. So as Shanaka. Sriwardena should give more chances bz he has done well from his 1st game. He's very effective in breaking partnerships. Much better than seekuge or Randiv. Tisara , Kusal ,gunatilake are the players who will perform in 1 game n fail in the next 4. We need consistent performers. Also y SL Are not playing seamers here when Aussi is taking wkts with seamers. If Auss had batted 1st ,our bowling woud hv gone to all parts during death overs. No variation in our Attack with a all spin attack. My 11 is Tharanga ,Dananjaya . Mendis. Chandi.Avishka.sriwardena. shanaka. Pathirana. Aponso. 2 seamers. Atleast try binura Fernando or Kasun Rajitha. Drop dilruwan bz he's well known as he has bowled alot in the tests.

Tharanga 34...Milinda 32....that cud be why there were not considered. Milinda has to hold a place in the side first...it is a cock and bull story to talk of him captaining when Mathews and Chandi are there. Most probably they will groom Kusal Mendis to be captain after Mathews and Chandimal. That is logical and rational.

Many are just commenting and critisizing the team that white washed Aussies 3-0 in a test series. Mathews and Jayasuriya are the their main topic. This is all when Arjuna the world cup winning captain says Mathew ls will most probably be the best captain we ever had.

armchair @- tell me who is happy now after seeing defeat after defeat due to rotten top order kept for more than three years? Although most fans realize the futality of persisting with guys like Kusal Perera at the top now, this was written to these forums three years ago in black and white. It took 16 series losses and multiple failures over that long for others to admit. Still i don't think the problem resolved, unless Chandimal becomes the skipper.

6 genuine batsmen, 1 batting all rounder, 1 bowling all rounder and 3 genuine bowlers. Enough with bits and pieces players, get a proper balanced team already!

Opening batsmen for the final ODI should be right and left combination, since opening combination of Dilshan and Tharanga yielded good result in the past. Pace bowlers would find it difficult to adjust the length and line in the power play. All the best Chandimal and team to make the series 3 - 2 instead of 4 - 1, where we would lose more ranking points.

Sri Lanka should fix their bating and bowling they need to develop good fast bowlers and batsman's yes they found young batsman like mendis but they need at least 3 good batsman at the moment there bating line up heavily dependent on Angelo Mathews chandimal yes mendis play well but still young needs time and 2 thing lack of fast bowlers Sri need to find good young fast fast bowler's

it can be clearly seen that the potential candidates for captaincy is being axed to keep Angelo as the long term captain. he surely knows Chandimal wont get the captaincy ahead of him.Milinda and Tharanga are the closest rivals for the captaincy in terms of domestic experience and credibility. This leads to even small mistake of those two players to keep the. out of the side.

Mathews was not at his best right from the beginning of this tour. I think it is because of his fitness. Now this injury can be a blessing in disguise. This guy needs some rest, both physically and mentally. I am sure he would be back with his best form. Good luck !
