England v New Zealand 2008

Wisden's review of Northamptonshire v New Zealanders, England v New Zealand, 2008

15-Apr-2009
At Northampton, May 30, 31, June 1. Drawn. Toss: Northamptonshire.
Treating this match as a confidence-boosting exercise after their defeat at Old Trafford, the New Zealanders were content to use the last day for batting practice rather than negotiate a run-chase with Peters, who had declared immediately on avoiding the follow-on. On the opening day Redmond shone, surviving a difficult return chance to Brown on 29 to complete his second century of the tour. It was hard work in dank, seamer-friendly conditions. Southee and Mills then undermined Northamptonshire's reply until Louw mounted a spirited counter-attack with five sixes, and New Zealand lost their top three before Saturday's close to offer the prospect of an interesting final day. But Taylor picked up where he left off at Manchester - hitting six sixes and 17 fours in a sumptuous display - and the county were left to play out time. Bob Carter, on the tourists' coaching staff, made his first return to Wantage Road since leaving his job as director of cricket in 2002.
Close of play: First day, New Zealanders 329-8 (Southee 12, Patel 2); Second day, New Zealanders 38-3 (Taylor 6).
