Series/Tournaments: Australia tour of West Indies

Australia's coach Mickey Arthur has warned the tourists that a West Indies trip following a demanding and successful summer should not be regarded as an end-of-season holiday.

As the ODI squad adjusted to the vast time difference between Australia and the Caribbean, Arthur said that any complacency after a home Test series victory over India and a subsequent triangular ODI series final success against Sri Lanka had to be weeded out of the team ahead of Friday's first match.

Among other challenges, Arthur also pointed to the unfamiliarity of West Indian conditions and also the prevalence of new faces in the hosts' squad as reasons for the visitors to be wary over the next seven weeks.

"There's three things we really need to guard against," Arthur told AAP. "One is attitude and complacency because we've come off a really good summer so we need to guard against that.

"We're in conditions that are very different to Australia so that's something we're going to need to get used to very, very quickly. Then the third one is an unknown opposition. Our preparation time is going to be so important to us. We can't compromise on our preparation time."

"An unknown opposition does present a lot more challenges," Arthur said. "They can certainly hit you hard up front and we could be chasing our tails for the rest of the series. We've got the week now to make sure in all disciplines we're right and ready to go come Friday."

Australia's training schedule will begin with a sharp fielding session on Monday, before the team settles into its plans and tactics for five limited overs matches. Arthur is working closely with the acting captain Shane Watson, and said the allrounder had so far surpassed his expectations.

"Shane's been really good. He has been outstanding," Arthur said. "I think he's led very well, he's led with authority which has been really good. I think he's almost performed above expectation in that area which is great."

"If things happen to Clarkey we want to have a really good and able vice-captain who can take over. He's also a vice-captain playing all forms of the game. Shane's doing that and can give a huge amount of support to Michael through the Tests and ODIs and to George Bailey through the Twenty20s."

One man not participating in the early matches of the series will be James Pattinson, as he recovers from a muscle strain. Though Pattinson has been afflicted by a foot ailment and now a buttocks problem in quick succession, Arthur said his preference was for young bowlers to train hard and learn to deal with the fact that injuries were a necessary evil of fast bowling.

"I would bowl him every day of the week if I could and let him loose ... the more for him the better," Arthur said. "I feel the same for all the younger bowlers. I think we've got to live with the fact that bowling is a real tough gig and guys are going to break down. We've just got to get them ready to go again after that."

@Randyoz :- "Most of our bowlers went down with injuries"...Sure... lol... Siddle, Hilfenhaus, Starc, Lyon didn't break down!... Rhino returned for Patto & wasn't injured... Ohh, in "most" you mean Pattinson... lol... Seems I have given you plenty of facts yet you never answer my questions or others... Hard to tell you from meety lately... :P

@Meety... Siddle has publicly stated that his fitness level gained from training with Carlton is the "major" reason for his improved bowling this season & his injury free statis has been improved because of this training... Nothing superficial about it... Try & keep up to date with things: Hayden, Ludeman, Paine, etc, etc... Perhaps if you actually went to a SS game you would have see Bird bowling & could make a real comment rather than a couch potato comment on him... PS: Nice try but what are you on about?... lol...

Look into the mirror before blaming things onto others :) ...

@ VEXXZ - as you mentioned WIndies batting 2 sessions, I assume you mean tests, sorry to tell you that Brett Lee has long retired from Tests & FC cricket. He'll only be playing in ODIs & T20s!!!!!

Lets say we give the players "nice fast bouncy pitches" , and the West Indies get The Aussies out for 300 or so . Please tell me which other West Indian batsman will last 2 sessions with Chanderpaul as they go up against Bret Lee and company ? .

I think Arthur has done a great job so far. .. he doesn't seem to say a lot but when he does he says the right things in my opinion. Here for instance he says respect the opposition, they can hurt you (are you taking notes there Freddy !!). ... the general impression I get is that the good ship Aussie Cricket has started going in the right direction since the change in regime. Of course there are going to be glitches like the one against the Kiwi's because the team is not as strong as it used to be, but overall I feel a lot more optimistic now than I did 18 months ago. .. that can't all be attributed to one person. All of the support staff have had some influence and I'd have to say that so far they are doing a pretty good job. .. thumbs up from me.

@zenboomerang - nice try, regarding the Ferguson post below. Pretty desperate.

@GravyMon...what is the team selection and leadership issues that you have? Not enough trinis and Jamaicans in the team? The trinidadian and jamaican players i.e. Chris Gayle think they are too big for WI cricket so i agree with the board on dropping them. Daren Sammy might not be the best player on the WI team but i'm pretty sure he is the best leader of the pack. The best players dont always constitute the best leaders e.g. Brian Lara, Tendulkar etc...

Ferguson is the GREATEST ODI batsman should be playing for Australia!!!!! What are those three Western Australian selectors thinking of leaving him out of the team. No NSW chief selector when we are the GREATEST domestic team in HISTORY. Rixon should be the coach as he is a GREATEST NSW batsman wicketkeeper. Ferguson should be batting at three for the tests and one day games and open in T20. We will lose against the West Indies in all matches without Ferguson. Just watch and weep at the GREATEST selection mistake in HISTORY!!!!!!

@ Syed Minhas Mahmood - As a West Indian, I would like to support your thought that the WI will be tough for Australia; but also as a West Indian, I'm afraid I must admit that we don't have that degree of confidence in our team's overall performance anymore. With highly uninspired leadership on and off the field, mediocre team selection, and a board hell bent on destroying WI cricket, all we can expect is some small streak of brilliance from one or two youngsters that would give us some hope for the future. It has been universally accepted that we are not putting our best product out on the pitch and as supporters we are very disappointed. We believe we have been short changed. We don't expect the outcome to be any better than our last visit to India. Warner will probably break Sehwag's record.
