Mohan de Silva has been elected uncontested as Sri Lanka Cricket's new president. He took over from Thilanga Sumaithpala, who decided to not re-contest after being held in police custody since January. Aravinda de Silva was reappointed as vice-president with Trevor Rajaratnam.
Mohan de Silva said that the first task of his administration was to restore credibility to the controversy-plagued sports body. "It is very important to have stability to rebuild the image of the board. We need stability, transparency, accountability and proper good governance."
"We have been confronted by many obstacles from the start of our journey last year. But we secured a coach, physio and trainer for the national team," de Silva said. "We secured tours for the `A' team on a home-and-away basis to help bridge the gap with international cricket, and we have successfully restructured our domestic tournament."
"This year we are focusing on an expansion of our plans, including action on our cricket academy to help improve and groom our up and coming players for the rigours of international cricket. We will take action to strengthen the national side - we have learnt lessons during the recent tour."
Sumathipala, embroiled in a passport fraud case, was appointed as Sri Lanka Cricket's official representative for international affairs, and will be an International Cricket Council director despite his ongoing court case, which has now been adjourned until May 6.
