In a match that witnessed some steller individual performances and tall scores by both teams, Mumbai drew their three day West Zone Under-22 league match at the Middle Income Group Ground in Bandra, Mumbai on Monday.
Opting to bat on the first day, Gujarat put up a fighting total of 334. The innings was held together by a gallant 135 by A Sood in the midst of a fine seven wicket haul by S Kannan. Sood, who came in at the fall of the second wicket, that of his skipper AA Christian (0) - forged a 117-run fifth wicket partnership with H Joshipura (67). Sood was the fifth batsman to be dismissed when he gave a return catch to U Malvi. During a 238-minute stay at the crease, Sood faced 181 balls and found the signboards 23 times. Thereafter, Joshipura added 70 runs for the seventh wicket with VL Parikh. The total was boosted by some wayward bowling by Mumbai as they conceded 44 extras.
In response, Mumbai took a 223-run first innings lead thanks to the centurions K More (117) and A Dhulap (133). At stumps on the second day, Mumbai were 183 for five. More and Dhulap came together for the sixth wicket and added 240 runs off just 47 overs. While More needed 141 balls to reach his century, Dhulap required only 110 balls. The pair was separated when Dhulap was caught by Parikh off Sood. But More kept going until he was finally dismissed with the total on 475, caught by Joshipura off J Patel. Then stumper AM Shetye (50 not out) and MA Khote (61) added 82 runs for the eighth wicket. The fall of Khote prompted the Mumbai skipper HS Shinde to declare the innings at 557 for 8. Gujarat played out the final 15 overs on the final day to score 18 for no loss.

South Zone clinched the CK Nayudu Under-19 Trophy by virtue of the massive 201-run first innings lead over Central Zone at the Barabati stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji did the star turn with a hat-trick early on the final day to help South bundle out Central for 176 runs in the first innings.
Resuming at 169 for 6, the Central Zone innings lasted just 4.1 overs more. The fourth ball of the third over of the day saw Balaji bowl Chandrashekar Atram for a duck. Sunil Upadhay (0) who replaced Atram was caught behind by Tahir Hussain off the next ball. Naveen Choudhury walked in to thwart Balaji's efforts but he was trapped leg before and Balaji had completed the hat-trick. The innings folded up in Balaji's next over when he shattered the defences of the last batsman H Shitoot (5). Balaji returned figures of 6 for 57.
South Zone could have enforced the follow on but they opted to bat again and piled up 313 runs before being all out shortly before the final draw of stumps. Openers T Suman (47) and Tahir Hussain (10) were off to a flying start adding 42 runs off just 4.2 overs. Tahir was the first to be dismissed, caught behind by Amit Deshpande off Atram. Suman soon followed him caught by Atram off Afroj Khan in the seventh over. Suman who played a steller role needed just 29 balls for his 47 with the innings being studded with nine boundary hits.
Deepak Chougule (38) and Arjun Yadav (26) took the score to 127. Arjun departed next, caught by substitute fielder Jitender off Naveen Choudhury. With only a single added to the total, Chougule fell to the same combination in Choudhury's next over. This brought ASK Verma (18) and Stuart Binny (70) together and they forged a 74-run fifth wicket stand. Binny was the sixth batsman to be dismissed, caught behind off Surender Singh. The South tail wagged considerably to prolong Central's agony. Surender Singh was the most successful bowler for Central Zone with figures of 5 for 53.

False dawn for Zimbabwe as Australia cruises home

After high noon, there came a false dawn

John Polack

After high noon, there came a false dawn. By the time that the clock struck midday at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart today, Zimbabwe had laid the platform for a great score and given itself a genuine chance of challenging Australia in the teams' Carlton Series encounter. Less than five and a half hours later, its hopes lay in tatters as it looked back upon the effect of a batting display that led the home team to a destructive six wicket victory with six overs to spare.
Alistair Campbell (124) and Mark Waugh (102*) traded centuries, and both bowling attacks were no better than steady, but there was little else in the way of parity between the teams. At 6/279, Zimbabwe appeared to have handed itself a great platform from which to attack the Australians. Alas, the target was overhauled with ridiculous, almost farcical, ease.
The Zimbabweans had headed to the southernmost of Australia's six major cricketing centres today with hopes of lifting themselves closer to the heights scaled by the all-conquering home side. For three and a half hours, they performed the job beautifully; after being invited to bat, the tourists produced their highest total of the tournament, a ground record score for a one-day international, and established a target of such magnitude that an Australian team had never previously overhauled a bigger score on home soil in one-day international history.
In the main, it was Campbell who was responsible. After a tough initiation against Glenn McGrath (2/43 off ten overs) and Damien Fleming (0/46 from ten), he orchestrated a half-century stand for the opening wicket with Guy Whittall (36); another half-century association for the second wicket with an aggressive Stuart Carlisle (36); and then a century stand for the third with Andy Flower (51).

Amit Deshpande soon joined his partner in the pavilion. Off the last ball of the fifth over bowled by Kerala paceman Steve Lazarus, Deshpande was bowled leaving Central Zone in a spot of bother at 26 for 2. North Zone retain Duleep Trophy

North Zone duly completed the formalities on Sunday and retained the Duleep Trophy

North Zone duly completed the formalities on Sunday and retained the Duleep Trophy. They had virtually made sure of this on the third day of their game against Central Zone and about the only interest on the final day was whether they would underline their overwhelming superiority and go on to register an outright victory at the Feroze Shah Kotla grounds. However despite getting a first innings lead of 261 runs early on Sunday, they opted to bat again and at stumps were 233 for eight wickets off 56 overs with Yuvraj Singh helping himself to an aggressive 130.
All the same, the individual honours on the final day were claimed by Yere Goud. The 29-year-old Railways veteran, who was 67 at close of play yesterday, remained unbeaten with 107. Out of the 69 runs that Central Zone scored today, Goud got 40. But he remained indebted to the last two batsmen Murali Kartik and Salabh Sriwastava who stayed with him long enough for him to get to the three figure mark. First, with Kartik (27) he added 42 runs for the ninth wicket off 15.3 overs. And then Sriwastava stood by him as he reached his hundred. The two pushed the score along by 39 runs in an association that lasted 13 overs and 46 minutes. By the time Sriwastava was bowled by Harbhajan Singh for five off the 42nd delivery he faced, Goud had reached his objective. The right hander batted five hours, faced 222 balls and hit 13 fours and two sixes.
With North Zone opting to bat again, there was no competitive interest in the rest of the match. But Yuvraj Singh helped himself to a hundred which may do some good for his morale. He batted 3-1/2 hours, faced 145 balls and hit 16 fours and three sixes.
North Zone finished their engagements with this fixture. Their tally of 23 points from four games cannot be reached. The only interest now in the final round of matches, commencing on February 1, is to see which team finishes runner-up. East Zone play West Zone and South Zone meet Central Zone in the two games. For the record, East have 13 points, Central 11, West nine and South eight, all from three games each.
