Sachin Tendulkar hammered 199 and added 225 runs for the third wicket with Vinod Kambli (105 not out) as West Zone went on a run spree on the opening day of their Duleep Trophy match against East Zone at the Nehru stadium in Pune on Thursday. Riding on the form shown by the gifted duo, West Zone rattled up 384 for four wickets off 90 overs at close of play.
It was a good toss that Tendulkar won but Wasim Jaffer was perhaps a trifle unfortunate to be out to the first ball of the match, edging Debasish Mohanty to Deep Dasgupta. The home team suffered another early blow when the other opening bowler J Zaman had Nayan Mongia caught by Sukhbinder Singh for seven runs.
Tendulkar joined Hrishikesh Kanitkar at this stage and at once there was a change in the tempo of the match. The hunter suddenly became the hunted. Even as Kanitkar held on firmly, Tendulkar blazed away with thrilling strokes. The third wicket partnership added 127 runs off 25.2 overs before Kanitkar was leg before to Sukhbinder Singh. For his 42, the former Indian player batted almost three hours, content to play second fiddle to Tendulkar. He faced 121 balls and hit eight fours.
Kambli replaced Kanitkar at the crease and thanks to some splendid batting by him and Tendulkar, West Zone quickly went into a position of ascendency. Tendulkar and Kambli did pretty much what they liked with the bowling. East Zone captain Shiv Sundar Das tried seven bowlers in all but the runs kept coming at a fast clip. Tendulkar took only 39 balls to reach his first 50, in which there were eleven fours. His second fifty came off 73 balls with nine hits to the boundary. In the third 50, which came off 52 balls, there were five fours and two sixes. Just when a double century beckoned, Tendulkar was caught by substitute M Gupta off Sanjay Raul. Tendulkar batted five fours, faced 214 balls and hit 20 fours and four sixes. He had come in during the 12th over and was out to the last ball of the 79th over.

An unbeaten 110 run fifth wicket stand involving centurion Tahir Abbas (119) and Rahat Ali (67) aided Central Zone to take the first innings lead over South Zone in their quarter final encounter of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (Under-16) tournament at the Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wodayar Sports Centre in Bangalore on Thursday. South Zone, resuming at 255 for seven, were all out for 279. In reply, Central at stumps were 284 for four wickets.
Central openers Arvind Maan (6) and Shivakanth Shukla (20) failed to give a solid start. I Varun bowled Maan in the fourth over of the innings with the score on 18. Ali Akbar (46) and Shukla carried the score to 54 before Shukla was run out in the 10th over. Then Tahir Abbas forged a 66-run third wicket stand with Ali Akbar off 18.2 overs. After a 108-minute stay at the crease, Ali Akbar was sent back to the pavilion, caught by Srinivasa Rao off S Yadav in the 28th over.
Then A Alam (16) batted sedately for 84 minutes, helping Tahir Abbas to add 54 runs for the fourth wicket off 21.4 overs. Central were still lagging behind by 105 runs when Rahat Ilahi walked in to join Tahir Abbas. In what could be deemed as the decisive partnership of the innings, Rahat and Tahir preferred not to play the waiting game. Rahat in particular was severe on the Central attack, plundering as many as 15 boundaries so far.
Tahir brought up his century shortly before close. He needed 150 balls to get to the mark, while Rahat needed just 44 balls for his half century. Both Rahat and Tahir saw through the day for Central while taking them past South Zone.

A fourth wicket stand of 130 runs between I Srinivas Rao (89) and skipper Anoop Pai (80) helped South Zone end the first day at 255 for seven in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (under-16) quarterfinal match against Central Zone at the Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wodayar Sports Centre in Bangalore on Wednesday.
South Zone started off on the wrong foot after they opted to bat. Opener Dinesh Kartik (7) was caught behind by Ali Akbar off Devendra Singh off the first ball of the fifth over. His partner Prasanth Peter (7) hung around till the 12th over when he was bowled by Vivek Yadav. This brought Srinivas Rao and Anoop Pai together. They took their time to settle down and then set about rebuilding the innings. Before long both notched up half centuries, with Srinivas getting to the mark first.
The partnership was broken when Srinivas was dismissed caught by Tahir Abbas off Shivakanth Shukla in the 54th over. During a 203-minute stay in the middle, Srinivas faced 147 balls and hit 15 boundaries. Then with the score on 195, new batsman Srivasudeva Das also departed caught by Shukla off Rahat Ali. Anoop was finally out in the 78th over of the day when he was caught by Tahir off Praveen Gupta. Anoop had batted a shade over four hours, during which he faced 209 balls and found the boundary ropes eleven times.
Central Zone claimed the new ball after 83 overs and in the last stages of the day's play Abhinav was trapped leg before by Devendra Singh. Two overs before the scheduled close of play, new batsman Manjunath also departed in a similar manner, the bowler this time being Vivek Yadav. I Varun (17) and S Yadav (9) were at the crease at stumps. The wickets were shared all around with new ball bowlers Devendra Singh (2 for 55) and Vivek Yadav (2 for 30) being the pick.

Final `Test' drawn, Indian lads clinch series

The England Under-19 team saved the final `Test' match against India Under-19 from the jaws of defeat

The England Under-19 team saved the final `Test' match against India Under-19 from the jaws of defeat. A brilliant unbeaten 53-run partnership for the ninth wicket off 17 overs between Robert Ferley and Justin Bishop helped the England colts frustrate the Indians at the Lal Bahadur stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday. England were 279/8 at final draw of stumps, with Ferley and Bishop unbeaten on 37 and 21 respectively. The Indian lads thus clinched the series by virtue of their victory in the first `Test' at Mumbai. The second `Test' at Chennai was also drawn.
Resuming their second innings at 58/0, after being 176 runs in arrears on the first, England colts were, for most part of the day, looking at defeat. The pitch remained true even on the fourth day, offering little assistance to the bowlers. It was a hot day and the English boys put up a poor show for the best part of the day.
England colts started off steadily with John Sadler and Nicky Peng showing some good form. Peng got to his half century in style, playing a beautiful cover drive off Nitin Aggarwal.
The score had slowly moved to 104, when Peng stepped out and drove Amit Mishra straight into the hands of the cover-point fielder, Alind Naidu. Peng made 72 attractive runs that included 11 boundaries. Four runs later, Sadler danced down the track to Vidyut and was beaten comprehensively by the flight. Ajay Ratra wasted no time, to stump Sadler out for 27.
