Central Zone, riding on Gagan Khoda's unbeaten 246, piled on the agony for South Zone on the second day of their Duleep Trophy match at the Bhausaheb Bandodkar Stadium in Goa on Friday. Resuming at 178 for two, Central Zone lost only one wicket the whole day while amassing a total of 469 for three. This was in reply to South Zone's first innings total of 141.
Khoda was in his elements. He struck the ball crisply and showed deep concentration and total determination. By close, the 26-year-old right hander from Rajasthan had faced 416 balls and hit 29 fours and five sixes. Khoda, who played in two ODIs against Bangladesh and Kenya in 1997-98, was at ease against the reputed South Zone attack which included Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Sunil Joshi, Aashish Kapoor, Vijay Bhardwaj and Venkatapathi Raju.
Khoda and the other overnight batsman Md Kaif took the score to 282 before the latter was caught by wicketkeeper Naidu off Kapoor for 69. He batted three hours, faced 179 balls and hit seven fours and a six. The third wicket partnership between Khoda and Kaif added 176 runs off 57.3 overs. That was South Zone's only success of the day for Khoda and Yere Goud then came together to share an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 187 runs off 54.2 overs. At stumps, Goud who got a century in the last match against champions North Zone was on 75 compiled off 163 balls with eleven hits to the ropes. South Zone who are already in arrears by 328 runs face another tiring day in the field on Saturday.

West Zone piled on the runs on the second day of their Duleep Trophy match against East Zone at the Nehru stadium in Pune on Friday. If yesterday, it was Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli who held centre stage, today it was the turn of Ramesh Powar to steal the show. He scored 113 as West Zone raced to 656 for seven declared in their first innings. In reply, East Zone were 50 for no loss off 14 overs.
Resuming at 384 for four, West Zone lost Kambli early. The former Indian left hander was bowled by Javed Zaman for 117. Sairaj Bahutule joined Jacob Martin and the two pushed the score along past the 450 mark. Martin was rather laborious taking 150 minutes to compile 39 runs. He faced 121 balls and hit six fours before being run out by East Zone skipper Shiv Sundar Das.
The East Zone bowling came in for punishment when Bahutule and Powar shared a 109-run seventh wicket partnership off 36.5 overs. Bahutule was then run out by Rohan Gavaskar for 62. The Mumbai leg spinner faced 129 balls and hit eight fours and a six.
Powar who settled down quickly now went for the bowling. He and Indian all rounder Ajit Agarkar did pretty much what they liked with the tired and dispirited attack in adding 94 runs for the unbroken eighth wicket off just 21 overs. Powar, who came in at No 8, batted three hours, faced 140 balls and hit 15 fours and two sixes. Agarkar remained unbeaten on 32 off 64 balls with four boundary hits and a six.

Tahir leads the way as Central crush South by an innings

Central Zone crushed South by an innings and 147 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (Under-16) tournament quarterfinal match at the Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wodayar Sports Centre in Bangalore on Friday. Central Zone now take on East Zone in the semifinals from February 4 to 6 at Bangalore.
The reality was that South Zone were well and truly beaten by an inspired Central Zone team in all departments of the game be it batting or bowling. If the day was dominated by their skipper Tahir Abbas' (212 not out) willow, Central Zone's new ball bowler Devendra Singh (5 for 40) was not to be left far behind as he demolished South Zone for the second time in the match to pick up match figures of 9 for 111.
Resuming at 284 for 4, Tahir Abbas and Rahar Ilahi (84) took the score along to 316, when the latter was sent back to the pavilion, caught by Nalin Reddy off I Varun. The partnership between Tahir and Ilahi extended to 142 runs for the fourth wicket. During a 141 minute stay at the center, Ilahi needed just 99 balls to score his runs, which came by mainly in the form of 19 boundaries. The dismissal of Ilahi brought Gaurav Tikkas (105) to the crease. But Tahir was not finished yet and in the company of Tikkas he tormented the South attack for a further 45.1 overs, plundering a 189 run stand.
Tahir's innings was studded with 29 boundaries in all while requiring 374 balls during his near eight hour long stay at the crease. Gaurav Tikkas gave ample company for his captain but more important was the fact that he scored his runs at will. He needed only 67 balls to reach his fifty and a further 62 balls to bring up his century. After batting for close to two sessions on the final day the Central Zone skipper declared the innings at the fall of Tikkas. After a 165 minute stay at the middle Tikkas offered a return catch to Nalin Reddy in the 131st over of the innings.
