Surrey is on the verge of winning the National League 2nd Division thanks to an unbroken partnership of 93 in 119 balls between skipper Adam Hollioake and Jason Ratcliffe against Derbyshire at The Oval.
Batting first Derbyshire were 89 for 2 at one stage. Australian Michael Di Venuto made 30 from 44 balls before he was caught by wicket keeper Jon Batty off Martin Bicknell. The trouble started when Saqlain Mushtaq removed Dowman as Derbyshire slipped to 118 for 6. Then Bailey who top scored with 43 (76 balls) joined Paul Aldred who made a quick 25 to take Derbyshire to 175. For Surrey, Saqlain claimed 2 for 34 while Ian Salisbury took 3 for 32.
In reply, Surrey lost Mark Butcher very early, run out while backing up. Then Ian Ward and Nadeem Shahid put on a stand of 55 from 99 balls to put Surrey in a better position. Hollioake (48* from 66 balls) and Ratcliffe (42* from 58 balls) saw Surrey through. Aldred was the best bowler for Derbyshire with 2 for 26. This defeat keeps Derbyshire rooted at the bottom of the division.

Keen tussle for first innings lead likely

An unbroken third wicket partnership of 61 runs off 17.3 overs between S Badrinath and Dinesh Mongia has given Jolly Rovers more than a ray of hope in their Buchi Babu all India invitation tournament pre quarterfinal against Kerala Cricket Association XI at the IIT-Chemplast ground in Chennai. At stumps on the second day on Monday, Jolly Rovers were 95 for two in reply to KCA's first innings total of 299.
Because of overnight rain which rendered the playing conditions unfit, play started only at 2 pm. The Kerala tail did not wag for long and about the only defiance was shown by skipper KN Ananthapadmanabhan who was last out for 48. Ganesh Kumar, who took two of the three wickets to fall on Monday (Kerala resumed at 275 for seven) finished the most successful bowler with four for 64.
When Jolly Rovers batted, experienced campaigner Sunil Oasis removed both openers J Joseph (20) and skipper Sujith Somasundar (10) with only 34 runs on the board. But Badrinath and Mongia weathered the storm and came through unbeaten at stumps. By close, the watchful Badrinath had faced 83 balls for his 28 and had hit only one boundary but the more enterprising Mongia hit three fours while facing 55 balls for his 32. The stage is set for a keen tussle for the vital first innings lead on Tuesday.

MRF in command against Associate Banks

MRF were in a position of considerable strength when bad light stopped play about an hour before the scheduled close on the second day of their Buchi Babu all India invitation tournament pre-quarterfinal against All India Associate Banks at the MAC

MRF were in a position of considerable strength when bad light stopped play about an hour before the scheduled close on the second day of their Buchi Babu all India invitation tournament pre-quarterfinal against All India Associate Banks at the MAC stadium in Chennai on Monday.
Resuming at 320 for five, MRF declared their first innings at 490 for nine. Associate Banks were 84 for three when play was first suspended and then abandoned for the day.
Tanveer Jabbar, 110 not out overnight, scored only four more runs before being dismissed. But N Gautam and the later order batsmen prolonged the bank team's agony. Skipper M Senthilnathan, himself no mean batsman at one time, came in at No 8 and and scored 14, helping Gautam to add 27 runs for the seventh wicket. Then Gautam and Test left arm spin bowler Venkatpathi Raju (21) were associated in an eighth wicket partnership of 49 runs off 11 overs. Finally, Gautam and Zaheer Khan put a tired and dispirited attack to the sword by adding 90 runs for the ninth wicket off 20.2 overs. Gautam, who batted a shade under three hours was then caught by Akhil off Sridhar for 83. He faced 121 balls and hit five fours and three sixes. Zaheer remained unbeaten on 43, scored off 66 balls. He hit four fours and two sixes. The innings was declared when Gautam was out.
If Associate Banks were to pose a serious challenge to MRF's total, a good start was imperative. But they never got it. Opener CP Sahu (12) slipped while trying for a single and was run out by a direct hit from Kanitkar at point. Daniel Manohar and Devendra Bundela battled along but batting was generally a struggle. Finally Manohar who batted almost two hours for 27, was caught by Raju off Gautam.

MAC-TNCA push Airlines into tight corner

Indian Airlines face an extremely difficult task on the morrow after closing out the second day of their MRF-Buchi Babu pre-quarterfinal at 23/1 in reply to MAC-TNCA's imposing 459/7 declared

Indian Airlines face an extremely difficult task on the morrow after closing out the second day of their MRF-Buchi Babu pre-quarterfinal at 23/1 in reply to MAC-TNCA's imposing 459/7 declared. India 'A' opener J Arun Kumar survived 51 minutes before being dismissed by legspinner Balaji Rao for 14 in what turned out to be the penultimate over of the day.
Play was suspended at 4.34 PM due to bad light and called off at 5.00 pm since the light had not improved. Manish Sharma and VVS Laxman held out until close but Airlines are still 436 runs adrift. If they do bat out the whole day tomorrow, it is unlikely they would have overhauled MAC-TNCA's first innings total.
In that eventuality the winner will be decided on run quotient (number of runs scored divided by number of wickets lost). MAC-TNCA's run quotient presently stands at 65.57. For Airlines the responsibility rests heavily on the shoulders of Laxman, Sharma, Ravneet Ricky and Vijay Dahiya.
In the morning play started 105 minutes behind schedule due to overnight rains having dampened the outfield. Indeed only 69 overs were bowled during the whole day. Resuming at 314/4 at the CPT-India Pistons ground here in Chennai, MAC-TNCA lost Sharath for 124 (191 balls, 16 fours, 1 six) when he edged Dodda Ganesh into the waiting gloves of wicketkeeper captain Dahiya.

Warwickshire's search for their first Championship win at Edgbaston since last September continued as their game against Middlesex fizzled out into a predictable draw.
Captains Neil Smith and Justin Langer did their best to manufacture a positive result with some last day collusion but in the end the need to collect points in a tight Second Division promotion race ensured that caution prevailed.
Warwickshire showed little interest in a target of 296 in 81 overs and they were happy to bat out time on 191 for five on a pitch that lost most of its pace.

Michael Powell and David Hemp kept alive Warwickshire's hopes of a first County Championship win in two months with a battling third wicket stand of 83 at Edgbaston.
Powell ended a poor run of three matches without a half century as he struck six fours in a patient 50 which came in almost three hours and Hemp followed up his first innings half century with an unbeaten 40.
But Powell fell on the stroke of tea when he drove Simon Cook to Mike Roseberry at short extra cover and Warwickshire went into tea on 131 for three, still 165 short of their victory target.

A sensational bowling and fielding performance from the visitors limited Leicestershire to 53 all out in 20 overs.
Leicestershire, after winning the toss and electing to bat were soon on the back foot. They continuously lost wickets and were never allowed to settle at any stage.
The first over of the day did not pass without incident. Darren Gough having just bowled a no ball, cleanly bowled Trevor Ward who was given not out because of the free hit ball rule. Ironically, Gough remained wicketless, but his pace and accuracy was magnificent.

Badri Attavar (136) and D Dhandapani (53) with an unfinished sixth wicket partnership of 133 runs off 33.2 overs saw TNCA President's XI end the first day of their Buchi Babu all India invitation cricket tournament prequarterfinal against ONGC at the AC Tech grounds in Chennai on a happy note. After being 163 for five shortly before tea, the State's second string were able to post a much more healthy looking 296 for five from 95 overs at stumps.
Winning the toss, TNCA President's XI were given a fair start with openers Ravindran John (24) and SP Lakshmi Kumar (33) putting on 49 runs off 14 overs. Satyajit Medappa (12) did not last long but Attavar and Sunil Viswanathan (25) got the home team going again with a steady fourth wicket partnership of 56 runs off 24.2 overs. The fall of Viswanathan and R Prasanna (1) in successive overs however saw the TNCA President's XI in a rather shaky position. But they need not have worried. For Attavar and Dhandapani then came together for their rescue act. Attavar played the anchor role to perfection and by stumps he had batted 333 minutes, faced 249 balls and hit 17 fours. Dhandapani, matching Attavar in run production, has so far batted 140 minutes for his 53. He has dispatched nine of the 102 balls he has faced to the ropes.
The varied ONGC attack made little impression. Virender Sehwag picked up the wickets of Medappa and Viswanathan for 50 runs but he bowled only 14 overs. Rahul Sanghvi sent down 25 overs and took the wickets of Lakshmi Kumar and Prasanna for 74 runs while Amit Bhandari went wicketless despite bowling 18 overs.

Proteas come from the clouds to level indoor series

South Africa has tied the inaugural Super Challenge 2000 series at Melbourne's Colonial Stadium at one match apiece with a eight run win in the third and final match of what has proved to be a very innovative and enjoyable series.
There were several heroes for the visitors, in particular the underrated left arm spinner Nicky Boje, who took 2/29 from ten overs of very accurate left arm spin and was awarded the Man of Series award. He proved difficult to get away in the mid to latter stages of the match and along with skipper Shaun Pollock (2/36 off eight) did some valuable damage during the run chase. Pollock proved again his great ability with the new ball getting the first two wickets while Adam Gilchrist (63 off 67 balls) powered away in the opening stages of Australia's innings.
Curiously right at the death Andrew Hall, who kept very well in the absence of the finger knife slicing Mark Boucher, was called up to bowl the second last over, with 22 needed. He started with a nervous wide but held up well under the pressure to concede only eight off the over and this left the Aussies needing 14 off the last.
Jacques Kallis took the ball and after a smiling conversation involving he and skipper Pollock, South Africa wrapped up the match with a bit to spare.
