Warwickshire took an immediate stranglehold on a low-key local derby meeting between two fading forces in the second division promotion race.
Worcestershire, beaten in five of their last eight Championship games, lost three wickets for eight runs after winning the toss against a visiting side without a win in six matches.
Philip Weston was first to depart, leg-before to Ed Giddins, and Graeme Hick failed to score before edging Alan Richardson to wicketkeeper Keith Piper. Paul Pollard then flickedd a leg-side catch to Piper, giving Giddins a second wicket on his return to action after a back strain.

Middlesex captain Justin Langer maintained his fine run of form with an unbeaten 76 on the first day of the County Championship second division match with Gloucestershire at Bristol.
The Australian batsman came into the game on the back of two successive championship hundreds and a third is now within his sights.
Langer elected to bat first when he won the toss, but soon found himself having to revive the innings after the early loss of Andrew Strauss, Mike Roseberry and Mark Ramprakash had left the visitors on 24-3 in the 12th over.

Vikram Solanki's third consecutive Championship 50 revived Worcestershire after a nightmare start against local rivals Warwickshire at New Road.
Ed Giddins and Alan Richardson took the first three wickets for eight runs, but Solanki reached an unbeaten 72 and shared in half-century stands with David Leatherdale and Jamie Pipe.
Wicketkeeper Keith Piper held two catches - the first to remove Graeme Hick for nought - when Worcestershire fell into trouble against good seam and swing bowling.

Marshall, Vincent lead Academy recovery

The contest between Hyderabad Cricket Association and New Zealand Cricket Academy was rather delicately poised at the end of the second day's play in this MRF-Buchi Babu quarterfinal game at the Guru Nanak College ground in Chennai today

The contest between Hyderabad Cricket Association and New Zealand Cricket Academy was rather delicately poised at the end of the second day's play in this MRF-Buchi Babu quarterfinal game at the Guru Nanak College ground in Chennai today. The Academy boys had replied with 208/4 to Hyderabad's first innings total of 392, still 184 in arrears.
In the morning fast medium bowler Kerry Walmsley added one more wicket to his kitty (5/102) as Hyderabad, resuming at 353/7, were bowled out in the 109th over. Overnight batsmen Yadav and Sabharwal added another 30 runs today before being separated, the last three wickets falling for nine runs. Left arm seamer James Franklin, 19, took the remaining two wickets to fall today.
The Academy made a disastrous start as Canterbury right hander Michael Papps fell for a third ball duck in the first over of the innings, bowled by Fiaz Ahmed. When Jarrod Englefield had his stumps disarranged by off spinner Jogam Yadav for 7, the visitors had slid to 45/2. That set the stage for a fightback by James Marshall of Northern Districts and Lou Vincent of Auckland, both 21, who added 130 for the third wicket in a little over 57 overs.
Fiaz Ahmed finally bowled Vincent for 72 (176 balls, 6 fours, 1 six) and Hyderabad pulled back another late wicket when Aaron Redmond was dismissed by Parth Satwalkar for six, six overs before stumps were drawn. Marshall's powers of concentration did not wane until the very end and he trudged back undefeated at close, having negotiated 87 overs without accident, on a personal tally of 95 (256 balls, 7 fours).

Interesting finish in prospect

An interesting final day's play is on the cards in the Buchi Babu all India invitation tournament between ONGC and TNCA President's XI at the AC Tech college ground in Chennai on Tuesday

An interesting final day's play is on the cards in the Buchi Babu all India invitation tournament between ONGC and TNCA President's XI at the AC Tech college ground in Chennai on Tuesday. At stumps on the second day on Monday, ONGC were 95 for two in their first innings in reply to the home team's score of 383. A total of 289 runs in a day with eight wickets in hand is a tough, but not impossible task. On the other hand, it is also possible for TNCA President's XI to take eight wickets without conceding that many. All in all, it can be said that the match is nicely poised for a keen battle for the all important first innings lead.
Having resumed at 296 for five, TNCA President's XI could not have been happy at getting only 87 runs on Monday morning. The overnight sixth wicket pair of Badri Attavar and D Dhandapani took their partnership to 151 before the latter was out for 62. Attavar was comparatively subdued but got to 155 before he was leg before to Saif. He batted 426 minutes, faced 306 balls and hit 18 boundaries. There was some resistance from the tail but the home team's total fell below expectations. Rahul Sanghvi finished the most successful bowler with three for 90.
ONGC were off a good start with openers Manoj Mudgal and Gagan Khoda putting on 52 runs off 12 overs before the former was out for 25. Skipper G Vadhera (3) did not last long but Khoda continued to go for his shots. Shortly before close, he reached his half century with eight fours and a six. By close he had faced 67 balls and a lot will obviously depend on him as ONGC continue their run chase on Tuesday. Keeping him company is another run getter with the proper credentials, Virendra Shewag who has started off well, getting 13 runs off ten deliveries with two hits to the fence.
