Isuru Udana

Left-arm fast-bowling allrounder Isuru Udana was in Sri Lanka's white-ball sides off and on through the 2010s. He could move the ball off the seam, and had a number of slower deliveries in his repertoire, including one out of the back of his hand that brought him some success at the top level.

He was fast-tracked into the Sri Lanka squad for the 2009 T20 World Cup, the year after he was selected to tour South Africa with the Sri Lanka A team (before he had played a single first-class match). He took five wickets in five games in that tournament as Sri Lanka progressed to the final. Then he largely fell off the selectors' radar till 2017, when he went to South Africa and played T20Is at home against Pakistan and India. It took another two years before he added to the two ODIs he played in 2012; 13 of his 21 ODIs came that year, 2019, but yielded a slender harvest of 12 wickets at the unenviable average of 45.5.

Udana's was a tale of potential that was not fulfilled at the highest level. While still a schoolboy, he joined Nondescripts CC. He was the leading wicket-taker in the Inter-Provincial T20 tournament in 2008-09, helping Wayamba to the title and securing them a berth in the Champions League Twenty20.
