Hasaranga does not even look back at the umpire in his celebrappeal, and that will be that for tonight! A collapse of gigantic proportions, and Bangladesh, who seemed to have things under control for so long, have been consigned to a heavy defeat, almost out of nowhere! This is a googly pitching on a length just outside off. Jaker, having defended the first four balls of the over, decides to chance his arm with the sweep. Not sure if he picked the wrong'un but he got into an awkward position, eventually being unable to access the ball. Rapped in front of middle stump, and with Bangladesh out of reviews, the umpire's finger was the death knell for a batting performance that Bangladesh will want to forget rather promptly!
Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, 1st ODI at Colombo, SL vs BAN, Jul 02 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
10pm A chaotic game of cricket (which is not a surprise in this particular rivalry), and it ended with Sri Lanka going 1-0 up. We have a lot more of this lined up, and expect that to be just as engrossing. Until then, catch all the action from the cricket happening in different parts of the world, including this India-England Test, where Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja are currently intent on taking India towards 300 and beyond. As for this game, on behalf of Chetan, Madushka and Vairavan, this is me, Shashwat, signing off. Goodbye and take care, folks!
Charith Asalanka, the Sri Lanka captain is also the Player of the Match: It was a difficult time (when I walked in). I was trying to do my basics right first. I got a good start and wanted to play according to the situation. (On not cashing in with the bat towards the end) Little disappointed about that. They were struggling with their injuries. We did not have enough wickets in hand (to capitalize on the last ten overs). (On the fielding effort) It was simply amazing. Our best fielding (effort in this ODI team), and they did their job very well.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh captain: (On the toss being crucial) Definitely. The wicket was good, we bowled really well, especially the fast bowlers, they took wickets early. We did not get wickets in the middle overs. Credit to Asalanka for the way he played - it was amazing. If we got wickets in the middle overs, we would have come back. It is very hot. Two important bowlers got cramps (Mustafizur and Tanvir). We played really well first 80 overs - Shanto and Tanzid played really well. The middle order batters, we did not play well. The back-to-back wickets were a problem.
9:46pm At the first drinks break of the second innings, Bangladesh seemingly had the game in the palm of their hands. Tanzid was batting superbly and even though Shanto had run himself out on the stroke of drinks, the visitors had plenty going their way. But then, everything broke. And everything broke rather inexplicably. They lost nine wickets for just 25 runs, with Sri Lanka just as much in disbelief at what was unfolding as Bangladesh. Jaker, who watched most of the carnage from the non-striker's end, tried to salvage something, but he was always waging a lone and a losing battle.
While some of Bangladesh's application was ordinary, at best, nothing must be taken away from Sri Lanka. They were put under pressure early in their defence, but kept at it, ultimately carving an opening through a run-out. And once they found the door ajar, they barged through, ramming every bit of Bangladesh resistance that came their way, with Hasaranga (four) and Kamindu (three) combining for seven wickets.
very full on the pads. Jaker digs it out towards mid wicket

Hasaranga hobbles into another over. And, uh-oh, Sri Lanka have been penalized for not starting the over on time. It would be the third such offence this innings, and this is not great cricket by the hosts
stumps smashed, but that will not count! Back of a length on middle and leg. Mustafizur tries to tonk that into tomorrow and misses wildly. The ball thunders into the stumps and it takes Madushka, stood at slip, a brief moment to realize that that will be an immaterial detail!
Golden chance for Mustafizur to get off the mark
back of a length on leg stump. Mustafizur is a little late in getting his bat down but does enough in the end to keep it out. And oh dear - Theekshana has overstepped too...
darted in full on the pads. Jaker tucks it towards deep mid wicket and hands Mustafizur the strike for one ball
streaky but guess what, they all count! Fullish just outside off. Jaker swings for the hills and gets a thick outside edge that dribbles away past short third. Brings up his fifty too - his third in ODI cricket, and this has been a stellar hand!
This partnership is already worth 31
into the blockhole just outside leg stump. Jaker jams down on it and digs it out towards long on
shorter and wider outside off. Jaker stays back and cuts it towards sweeper cover. Single denied again
safe! Pushed in on a length just outside off. Jaker has a wild swipe across the line and shanks it on the bounce to deep mid wicket
tossed up on a length on off. Mustafizur gets a good stride in and defends
Mustafizur has one ball to face against a limping Hasaranga. Two slips and a leg slip in play as Hasaranga goes around the wicket
googly on a length on off. Jaker reads it off the pitch and nurdles it enough to the pitch's right to hare across to the other end
shot! Length on middle and leg, and Jaker climbs into it. He gets down on one knee, rolls his wrists and razes it behind square for four!
lobbed up nicely on a length outside off. Plenty of purchase off the pitch and Jaker dabs it towards short third with the turn
leg-spinner on a length just outside off. Jaker hangs back and taps it gently into the off side
Hasaranga seems very stiff
tossed up full just outside off. Jaker has a very tentative prod at it and squirts it off the inside edge towards short fine leg
Hasaranga back on. SL will have to choose which ball to continue with after this over

angled in on a back of a length on off. Mustafizur lets the ball come to him before meeting it right under his eyes
Two balls to survive for Mustafizur. Theekshana goes around the wicket
