The Renegades have their first win of the season! Fuller length on off, Rogers back away and lofts this over mid-off, and they run across for a single
Strikers vs Renegades, 18th Match at Melbourne,BBL 2023, Dec 29 2023 - Match Result
Renegades won by 3 wickets (with 8 balls remaining)
10:40pm: And that's all we have tonight, as the Renegades have the first win of their season. We'll be back with more BBL action tomorrow with the big Sydney derby as the Thunder take on the Sixers. Until then, on behalf of our scorer K Vairavan, this is Aaditya Narayan signing off. Good night, take care.
Jake Fraser-McGurk is the Player of the Match
"Very happy to get our first win of the season. Don't know a lot about it (Clarke's injury), so didn't want to risk too much. (On Marsh) Just an old head, just to have that experience and know-how there was so good for us tonight. There's always been belief but there a point a year and a half ago, where I thought I needed to do something different. I did that, and it's starting to turn a bit now and hopefully keeps going. I do enjoy hitting sixes. As I said the other night, it's like getting a nice drive in golf. In bowlers' terms, it's like bowling someone out"
10:35pm: Right then, the Renegades are on the board in terms of wins this season. The Strikers, meanwhile, have now lost eight away games in a row. 177 seemed like a good score, but they had the game taken away from them by two stunning knocks. First Jake Fraser-McGurk went his own merry way and showed incredible intent right from the off. He found the perfect foil in the experience of Shaun Marsh, who played a superbly calculated innings, especially against the spin of Cameron Boyce. Both those fities mean that the Renegades now have their first win of the season
Yorker length, dug away to midwicket, they look for a single but it's not there
Tom Rogers, then. Can he finish it off without a hiccup? They've retired Clarke hurt again! Zampa has walked in alongwith Rogers
Marsh will not finish it off for the Renegades! That's a stunning yorker from Payne, Marsh plays all over it and sees the timber disturbed. The experienced man has done his job though, he has played a stunning hand for his side in this game
gets away with a filthy long hop down leg! Gets the radar horribly wrong on the slower one, Marsh pulls it one-handed but finds short fine leg
Payne to bowl what will surely be the last over of this match
Over to Marsh to put the final touch on the Renegades' first win of the season then. Slower ball again, short of a length, Clarke goes for the pull, but mistimes it back to the bowler
Scores are level now, and Overton will have to rebowl this one. He digs it in short, but then sees it sail over Clarke's head
yorker length again, on off stump, Clarke digs it out to mid-off
oh, that off cutter beats him, it was short of a length, he looked to pull it without any feet movement but it went past the inside edge
Shot! His quad may render his feet a bit problematic but no problem with those hands, he moves away outside leg, Overton follows him, Clarke whips it superbly in front of square for another boundary
length ball on off stump, pushed to backward point
Yorker length, dug out behind square on the offside, then ease across for a single
Overton to bowl the second over of the Surge with the Renegades needing 7 off 3 overs
slower ball, short of a length, Clarke looks to cut it away, but doesn't get any timing on it, it goes through to Nielsen on the bounce off a thick inside edge
And that's what he's walked out for! Low full toss angling in to him from around the wicket, Clarke times it beautifully past extra cover and gets a boundary. He really is struggling to move though.
Joe Clarke has come back out to bat here
One shot too many! Slower ball again, he looks to belt this one over long-on, but gets too much elevation on it and can't find the distance. Hose makes no mistake this time at long-on.
The skipper goes big and that should be the game! Cutter, length ball, lands right in the slot, Sutherland winds up seeing it in his arc and gives it a thump over midwicket
on pace this time, full and wide outside off, Sutherland flays it over extra cover and finds a boundary that takes the Renegades closer
slower ball, back of a length on off stump, cuts away, Sutherland looks to force it on the offside but misses it
The Renegades have taken the power surge now.
Colin: "On TV they're talking as if there's some doubt that MR will win this. It's a done deal, isn't it?" -- Given how they went the other night in Perth, one can't be sure with this team, Colin. They are in a superb position though
Dan: "Marsh will get this chase done. I don't understand these batters coming out and trying to smash the cover off the ball from the get go. Turn the strike over! SOS should get it done "
full length on middle and leg stump, flicked away to deep square leg
full length on middle and leg, dug out onto the legside, Sutherland looks for a quick single but Manenti runs over from midwicket to stop it
digs this one in short, Sutherland lets it go over him, but he gets the extra run for the wide
The skipper Sutherland walks out to join Marsh
