fantastic yorker from Gul, but it's in vain as Broom digs it out and the batsmen zip through for a single, New Zealand are through, Pakistan are out
New Zealand defy expectations and make it to the finals. Daniel Vettori showed his worth with bat and ball again, and Grant Elliott shrugged off a hand injury to turn in a second match-winning performance. Pakistan's fielding will need to improve, that sitter which Younis put down isn't going to be forgotten soon, and they missed plenty of direct hits, one of which would have been enough to turn the game. Ultimately, though, it will be the batting that will have to take the blame, 233 was just not good enough on a pitch with nothing in it for the bowlers.
The best thing for Pakistan in this tournament has been Umar Akmal's batting, his mature approach against the West Indies and today's composed innings. And Mohammad Aamer confirms he's one of the brightest talents around.
Younis Khan: "I think we were 20-25 runs short. At one stage, we looked like making 250, all the time we are struggling in the Powerplays and we collapsed.
"The plan was that someone from the top four should stay, it was a good pitch to bat, if you score 250, it would have been very good.
"If I take that catch, maybe things may have changed, but in sports this is not the first time."
"We won the World Twenty20 and reached the semi-finals here. We are improving day by day."
Vettori: "It all started with the way we bowled. 230 was a score we fancied we could chase. We have not been a consistent side, but we have managed to do that here."
"We were always thinking of making it 60 off 60, we didn't quite get there but with the Powerplays, it makes such a difference. Elliott was great against Gul in that over which tool the game away from them."
Vettori is also the Man of the Match for his all-round efforts.
Whew, a fantastic win for New Zealand, they take on their neighbours Australia on Monday. Do join us then, it's me Siddarth Ravindran saying goodbye. Thanks for all the mails, see you Monday.
big appeal for lbw, full ball looked to be sliding down leg, there was an inside-edge as well
full and just outside, punched to extra cover
the scores are level as Broom steers the ball wide of third man for a couple
Elliott glides the ball to third man for a single, moving on to 75
The Powerplays have made all the difference, 55 runs in them
Vettori is gone, too little too late for Pakistan, Vettori goes down the pitch and goes for a big heave, misses the ball, Akmal has an easy stumping
Elliott swings the ball down to fine leg for a single
Vettori is down the track and turns the ball to midwicket for a single
off the pads, the ball runs towards point for one
Elliott is finishing this in a hurry, comes down the track, and opens the face as he drives the ball past cover, picked the doosra early there
Vettori sweeps from well outside off towards square leg
Ajmal is back into the attack
plays it with soft hands, but the ball drops dead at his feet, no run
Much of the crowd is making its way out of the ground
Vettori clips the ball to deep square leg for another single
reverts to the let-me-just-drop-it-and take-a-single mode, dabbing it to backward point
whoah, Elliott is turning on the style, singles? what are they, he says, smacks that one over midwicket for six, New Zealand are nearly home, it will need an almighty choke from here for New Zealand to go out
Elliott shows us he's not a single-specialist, another boundary, again full, this time Elliott launches it wide of mid-on
The crowd has gone silent, even the bugler isn't to be heard
fantastic shot from Elliott, full ball on off, backs away and lofts that between cover and extra cover for four, first ball for a boundary takes the pressure off
Umar Gul, the yorker specialist is on, for what is going to be a crucial over. Gul holds the key for Pakistan
finishes off with - you guessed it - a slower ball, Elliott makes room to cut, and dabs it towards the off side
one more slow delivery, dabbed towards point by Vettori
yet another slower ball, 102kmh, perhaps the quicker ball is his surprise delivery? this one is lashed through covers for two more
