middle stump goes for a toss, and the streak is over! Sunrisers Eastern Cape are on the board, and they have looked every bit the two-time winners tonight! Hard length, pitching just outside off and jagging back into Maharaj. He has a wild whoosh across the line and misses it completely. Loses his middle stump soon after and SEC are all smiles. They have endured a tough start to the tournament but things are suddenly starting to look much better and this win will go a long way in re-establishing confidence!
Eastern Cape vs Super Giants, 11th Match at Durban, SA20, Jan 17 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
9:15pm That will be all from us for tonight. We hope you enjoyed our coverage and we will be back with more SA20 action tomorrow. Until then, this is goodbye from Chandan and myself. Take care, everyone!
Noor Ahmad, Player of the Match: I was just trying to contribute to my team and wanted to bowl wicket-to-wicket - that always gives good results. (On chats with Maharaj) Communication in our team is very good. We always talk to each other, they give information about the conditions, about different batters and players. (On adapting to different conditions) It is easy - just keep it simple. Try to do what is my natural ability. Not happy with the result but we will try to come back stronger.
Aiden Markram, Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain: With the bat, we got off to a nice start, had a good powerplay. It was tough in the middle but some good partnerships with Tom and Marco to get a pretty good total on the board. You always worry with a batting line-up like DSG but hats off to the bowlers for taking wickets regularly. (On what he felt was a good score) With what we got, we felt we were going to be in the game. We knew we had to bowl well and take wickets often. You never know nowadays, guys hit sixes for fun. Lots of good things with the bat and the ball, still a few things to improve upon. (On Abell) Great mindset, calm head, and a really good player against spin. His touch game is good, nice guy to have at three and ultimately that 59 is worth a lot more at different venues. (On Jansen and Stubbs with the bat) Marco has been in really good form. It was a crunch moment and you want guys in form in the middle. Myself and Stubbs have not gotten going yet. Thankfully it (promoting Jansen) paid off. Quality side, quality opposition, you take any win against them (DSG).
Keshav Maharaj, Durban's Super Giants captain: We bowled too many soft boundary balls and our fielding is not where we want it to be. Credit to Sunrisers - they outplayed us in all facets. Only a matter of time before we click as a unit but we do need to address it. (On de Kock batting in the middle order) Tactical thing to combat a few situations. He (de Kock) has done an exceptional job, Parsons has stepped up as well. (On what is ailing them with the bat in the middle overs) We are losing a lot of wickets. Application is maybe something we are lacking and finding the right gameplan to tackle (the bowling). (On the fans and their support) Thank you to all the guys for supporting us. It has been a disappointing last two games but hopefully, we can give them something to cherish (in the matches that remain).
8:54pm A clinical and one-sided victory in the end. And to help SEC's case, they win with a bonus point too. They kept things tight in the powerplay and once spin came on, they truly squeezed the life out of DSG's chase. Dawson was brilliant, as was Harmer and the fast bowlers then wrapped things up promptly, bowling at the stumps and demolishing them quite often.
An insipid batting display to follow what was a patchy bowling performance earlier by DSG. None of their batters got going and they seemed to struggle against the lines and the lengths SEC bowled. They are now winless since their opening-game victory against the Pretoria Capitals and might have to indulge in some introspection before their next match on Sunday against the same opposition.
slanted in full on leg stump. Naveen plays all over it and gets pinged on the pads
Naveen is the last man in
stumps rattled again! Zipped in very full on middle and off. Bowled at almost 140 clicks and Noor is a week late on it. The ball bursts past his blade and then thuds into the stumps. Gleeson is delighted, SEC are delighted; DSG and the Durban crowd, very dejected!
fullish outside off. Maharaj throws his hands at it and slices it towards sweeper cover
Noor is the new batter in. At the other end for now
another moment of magic in the field, and the Sunrisers Eastern Cape are enjoying themselves now! Shortish just outside off. Maharaj dabs it towards backward point and takes a couple of steps down the track. Woakes thinks that is the cue to hare across, only to then be sent back. Dawson collects cleanly and then rifles it into the stumps at the bowler's end with his right hand. Dawson does bowl left-handed but he is ambidextrous when it comes to throwing. Woakes and Maharaj were late to realize that, and DSG are now eight down!
back of a length just outside off. Maharaj gets up on his toes and defends
Maharaj on strike
Mulder perishes too! Banged into the track outside off. Mulder has an ungainly swipe across the line and gets a huge top edge. The ball swirls and swirls, but Abell is up to the task. Watches it all the way and completes the catch with minimal fuss!
hung up wide again. Woakes has a waft at it but this time, only connects with fresh air
just short, and it hits the fence ultimately! Full and wide outside off. Woakes throws his hands at it and flays it towards sweeper cover. Hermann prioritizes the catch but the ball falls just in front of him. He cannot get anything behind it and the ball bounces into the fence!
Around the wicket now to Woakes
dug into the track outside off. Mulder gets up on his toes and jabs it towards deep point
full outside off. Woakes leans into the drive and times it sweetly, picking up a single to sweeper cover
Woakes joins Mulder
Jansen among the wickets too! Full outside off and Smith thinks he can smack this downtown. Goes through the line but does not get the connection he desires. More height than distance and Harmer settles under it at long off, ensuring there are no further hiccups. SEC can sense their first win of the season!
slow and short outside off. Smith waits on it and cuts it towards deep point. Good work by Hermann on the fence to keep it to two
Jansen back to bowl the 17th. DSG need 68 and a miracle off the final four overs to win this from here
pushed in on a length on middle and off. Mulder plays the trajectory and stays back, prodding it towards the bowler
length on middle and off. Smith backs away and eases it towards sweeper cover
shortish on off. Turns away, which gives Mulder width. He cuts it towards extra cover, where Markram sprawls to his left and keeps it to a single
fired in on a length on middle and off. Mulder, caught on the crease, defends it back to the bowler
back of a length just outside off. Stops in the surface and Smith, waiting on the back foot, punches it to long off
Smith on strike now
flighted up full on middle and off. Mulder opens his bat face and guides it towards backward point
Dawson again
stumps demolished, and that will be that for de Kock tonight! Searing full delivery, tailing into leg stump from around the wicket. de Kock looks to smash it into the ocean and perhaps aims too square. Only grabs a handful of fresh air and the ball clips the back leg before thundering into leg stump. Leg stump lies flat on the ground, and that perhaps is emblematic of DSG's pursuit of SEC's target too!
Over 19 • DSG 107/10
