skied to the keeper, and Australia will retain the Ashes for another cycle! Sutherland wraps up the win, by a thumping margin of 57 runs. Another two points puts them 8-0 up, with eight to play for. England's hopes of regaining the Ashes for the first time in a decade extinguished
AUS Women vs ENG Women, 1st T20I at Sydney, Women's Ashes, Jan 20 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
10.45pm: So, the wait goes on for England. After arriving with high hopes, they have now lost four on the spin - although Australia won't be satisfied until the Ashes are won outright, having been held to 8-8 last time around. For now, Valkerie's match report should be your first port of call, then stick around for more from our team at the SCG. Next it's on to Canberra, with Australia looking to maintain their dominance. We'll see you again for that on Thursday. Bye!
10.35pm: Time for the presentations, starting with Player of the Match, Beth Mooney: "Feeling pretty confident at the halfway stage, but you always think you can get more runs. We lost our way in the middle and at the back end. Wicket was pretty flat, didn't play many tricks early. The problem-solving nature of the game I really enjoy, England's bowlers threw a few plans at me and I had to react. [Voll debut] Absolutely cool. Seen a lot of Volly, thrown a lot of balls at her, couldn't be prouder. She came out and took it on from ball one."
England captain, Heather Knight: "Outstanding innings by Moons, she's so hard to bowl at when she's like that. Gave them too many runs, I thought, 20-30 less and we would have been in with a shout. Sophia Dunkley gave us a chance. Felt like we were in it. She was smart with her options, hitting down the ground. We got a partnership together, unfortunately I went for the wrong option. She has such a free swing and she hits the ball so cleanly, it's beautiful to watch. Frustrating today but on to the next one."
Australia captain, Tahlia McGrath: "Very happy, had a lot going on over the last 24 hours. Showed our depth. We're so hungry to improve every game. Found a way tonight. [King] Slightly different role for her in the powerplay, so players again stepping up. Looking forward to Manuka, great place to play cricket. England came hard at us in the powerplay so that's an area to look at, then trying to boss it in the field again."
10.31pm: Handshakes in the middle, Heather Knight leading a glum-looking England contingent out on to the field. The miced-up Phoebe Litchfield is already saying Australia are "targeting a whitewash now". Having won the ODIs 3-0, Australia are now 1-0 up in the T20Is with two more to come, followed by next week's day-night Test. For England, who came to Australia with such optimism after an 8-8 draw in 2023, it's been a crushing experience - and it could still get worse

Andy_Roo: "Of course, I want Australia to win the ashes but it will be very disappointing to see a dead test in Melbourne." Yes, although even an (unlikely) England win from here is a long way from taking the series to the MCG
