South Africa's rare consecutive Test series losses at home

1999 - Last instance of South Africa beating England in a Test series at home. Since then England have toured four times, winning three series and drawing one.

1913 - The last time England won three Tests in a series against South Africa in South Africa. This is also the first instance of three consecutive home losses for South Africa since Australia whitewashed them back in 2005-2006.

70 - Years since South Africa lost two consecutive home Test series. They lost to Sri Lanka in early 2019 and now lost to England. Previously they lost to England and Australia in 1948 and 1949-50. This is also the first instance since 2004-05 that South Africa have lost three consecutive series. They lost to Sri Lanka (2-0), India ( 3-0) and England (3-1).

5 - Losses at home in the last six Tests for South Africa. The last instance when this happened was back between 1949 and 1950 when South Africa lost to England and Australia. South Africa's previous five losses at home stretched back up to five years, across 26 matches.

2008 - The last time a pace bowler from England took better figures away from home than Mark Wood's 9 for 100. Ryan Sidebottom took 10 for 139 against New Zealand at Hamilton. Hoggard's 12 for 205 in Johannesburg in 2005 was the last instance of a seamer taking more wickets than Wood did in a Test in South Africa.

284 - South Africa's highest score in the series - This is only the second instance in which South Africa have failed to score in excess of 300 in series comprising of four matches or more. Previously, they failed to do so in India in 2015-16.

24.12 - Average runs per wicket scored by South Africa in this series - their third-lowest in a home series since readmission. This is also the worst against England in any series since readmission.

224 - Wickets taken by Vernon Philander in his Test career. Philander finished with 224 wickets at an average of 22.32 and with 13 five-wicket hauls. Philander' s average is the second-best for South Africa behind Allan Donald for any pace bowler with 200 or more Test wickets.

20 - Test wins for Joe Root as captain. He is now only the fifth captain for England to secure at least 20 Test wins. Michael Vaughan has the most Test wins for England with 26 between 2003 and 2008.
