Australia v South Africa 1910-11

Toss: South Africa

15-Apr-1912
Toss: South Africa. Test debuts: Australia - H.V.Hordern.
Rain had fallen in Melbourne, and Sherwell, on winning the toss, ventured to put his opponents in. His policy, though thought to be justified at the time, turned out very badly, the Australians at the end of the afternoon having scored 317 for eight wickets. Following up this early advantage in great style, the Australians won the match in the end by 530 runs. In their second innings, the wicket having completely recovered, they hit up the huge score of 578. Armstrong and Hill put on 254 runs for the fourth wicket, Hill playing especially well. Both hit thirteen fours, Trumper and Ransford were also seen at their best. Left with 702 to get, the South Africans were, of course, hopelessly outplayed. Given a place for the first time in the Australian eleven, Hordern bowled with great success.
