Worcestershire wrapped up their second CricInfo Championship win of the season by an innings and three runs but Rob Bailey's first century of the season kept them waiting well into the afternoon session.
Bailey supervised some spirited resistance before Kabir Ali took two wickets in four balls to give Worcestershire their first win in Derbyshire for 28 years.
The chances of the game lasting until just before 3pm seemed remote at the start of the final day with Derbyshire still 113 runs away from making Worcestershire bat again but they came within three runs of avoiding an innings defeat.
Bailey has had a lean time this summer but 98 in the previous game at Southampton suggested he was running into form and he did not offer a chance on route to his 47th first-class hundred.
Graeme Welch also applied himself to share a sixth wicket stand of 115 in 49 overs and the pair almost made it through the morning session but Alamgir Sheriyar pinned Welch lbw for 39 in the penultimate over.
Welch had been dropped at fine leg by Kabir Ali 20 overs before that and there was more frustration for Worcestershire as the tail stayed with Bailey who completed his century by driving Matthew Rawnsley for six.
Nathan Dumelow resisted for 14 overs before he was caught at first slip pushing at Rawnsley and Paul Aldred stayed for nine overs before he carved at Kabir and was caught one handed at second slip by Graeme Hick.
Lian Wharton went three balls later when he was lbw for a duck leaving Bailey undefeated on 136, his highest score for Derbyshire who have now lost five championship games and remain adrift at the bottom of Division Two.
