MELBOURNE, Jan 26 AAP - Australian batsman Michael Bevan still has some chance of playing in next month's cricket World Cup in South Africa after a better-than-expected medical report on his injured groin.
Bevan tore a groin muscle during Australia's tri-series final victory over England at the MCG yesterday, with initial reports suggesting he would not be fit to play in the World Cup.
But scans this morning in Melbourne have shown a grade one tear of his adductor muscle - an injury doctors say usually has a recovery time of two to three weeks.
With Australia's first World Cup match 17 days away, Bevan could recover to play against Pakistan in Johannesburg on February 11.
Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said it was unlikely a final decision would be made today on whether to keep Bevan in the squad or replace him with a fit player.
"We need to consider exactly what to do, get everyone (selectors) together and talk about it, so it's very doubtful we'll make a decision today on it," Hohns said.
Already selectors have had to replace all-rounder Shane Watson, who was ruled out of the tournament yesterday with a stress fracture in his back.
Victorian Ian Harvey has been drafted in as his replacement.
Leg-spinner Shane Warne and fast bowlers Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie are also on the comeback trail from injury.
