At Perth, February 8, 2012 (day/night). India won by four wickets. India 4pts. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Kohli's stature in Australia grew even loftier when he made sure India didn't squander a helpful start. Zaheer Khan reinforced his own importance to India by claiming Tharanga early, then drawing an edge from Sangakkara that was brilliantly taken by Dhoni. Chandimal adeptly played the anchor role for Sri Lanka, but among the other batsmen only Mathews showed sufficient urgency.
When Tendulkar fell in the 19th over, India's greatest concern appeared to be his continuing failure to notch his 100th international hundred. But as Rohit Sharma, Raina and Dhoni followed, with 67 still to get, the result looked in the balance. Sri Lanka's chances improved further when Kohli, stoically coping with cramp, was run out by Malinga's direct hit from mid-on. Jayawardene, knowing another wicket would expose India's tail, relentlessly rotated his bowlers, but none was able to threaten Jadeja or Ashwin.
Man of the Match: R. Ashwin.
Attendance: 6,685.
