ENGLAND v PAKISTAN

At Nottingham, September 1

15-Apr-1997
At Nottingham, September 1. Pakistan won by two wickets. Toss: England. International debuts: Shahid Anwar, Shahid Nazir.
Knight's second hundred in two days (a feat previously achieved in a limited-overs internationals only by Dean Jones and Saeed Anwar) was made in a losing cause against a drastically rebuilt Pakistan side. He carried his bat, but no one was able to stay with him long. Atherton was the next-highest scorer, with 30, although his innings was interrupted by an unpleasant blow on the right thumb from Shahid Nazir's second ball. In reply, Pakistan's opening pair of unrelated Anwars and the prolific Ijaz Ahmed reached 177 for two before the middle order subsided, losing four wickets for 22, three to Hollioake. The result hinged on a run-out decision in the 48th over, when Rashid Latif seemed to have been beaten by Atherton's under-arm throw. The third umpire, Ray Julian, gave him not out, apparently on the suspicion that the bails had been dislodged by Stewart's pads fractionally before the ball hit the stumps. Latif went on to cut the winning runs off Hollioake with two balls remaining.
