At The Oval, May 21. England won by seven wickets. Toss: England. Played on a pitch of gentle pace, and on a cold day, the match revolved around major innings from Miandad and Broad. The difference lay in Broad's support from Athey (61 balls) and Lamb for 23 overs each. When Gatting, with a toe infection, did not resume after tea (England 83 for one), Lamb (71 balls, one six, three fours) picked up the pace. The light was deteriorating, and 50 from 61 balls by Broad and Lamb, in a partnership of 116, was just what England needed. Put in, Pakistan made the worst possible start. Ramiz, without facing a ball, was beaten by Foster's underarm throw to Richards in the first over. But from the seventh over, Miandad took charge, at first streakily and then with invention and audacity. With Mudassar (132 balls) he put on 110 in 36 overs, hit his fourth one-day international hundred off 130 balls, and when Lamb, running some twenty yards at third man, caught a top-edged flail, he had faced 142 balls and hit ten fours. Broad (168 balls, four fours) was more orthodox and unlucky to miss his hundred: the square-cut 2 which brought his 50 should have been 4 runs as Ramiz had his foot over the boundary rope when picking up the ball. That said, Broad was desperately close to being run out when 77. Salim Malik, diving to his right at cover, and Mujtaba, sprinting back to long-off to dismiss Lamb, held catches that matched the excellence of Lamb's.
