At Dambulla, August 2, 2005 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 50 runs. Sri Lanka 6 pts. Toss: Sri Lanka. One-day international debuts: W. U. Tharanga; D. C. Butler, R. R. Ramdass.
The outcome of this match was all but settled by Maharoof's opening spell of three for nine from ten successive overs as West Indies chased a challenging target. Using his height to advantage on a pitch offering him some encouragement under the lights, Maharoof harassed the batsmen with his controlled movement, and complemented his testing bowling with a spectacular catch at long leg off Joseph four balls after spilling a dolly in the same position. Smith hit a belligerent 68, which included 15 in an over from Chandana, but there was never a realistic prospect of a proper contest. Earlier, Deighton Butler, a 31-year-old left-arm fast bowler from St Vincent, had taken a wicket with his eighth ball in international cricket and conceded only 25 from his ten consecutive overs, but Atapattu and Sangakkara were seldom troubled.
Man of the Match: M. F. Maharoof.
