James Whitaker last night announced that he was retiring as a
player and standing down as Leicestershire captain after failing
to overcome knee problems. The 37-year-old Yorkshire-born
batsman, who has led Leicestershire to two County Championship
titles in the last three years, broke the news to his players in
Worcester, where they are preparing for tonight's National League
game.
Whitaker is already gaining a reputation in coaching and has been
handed the job of managing the England Under-19 side in this
winter's World Cup tournament in Sri Lanka.
Whitaker is also managing the First Class Counties XI who face
Sri Lanka A in a one-day match at Durham in 10 days. Sussex's
Chris Adams is the captain. Adams, who hit a career-best 163 in
Sunday's National League win over Middlesex, leads a 12-man squad
drawn from counties not involved in the same day's NatWest Trophy
quarter-finals.
