Herschelle Gibbs has signed a three-month contract to play for the English
club Lashings this season. Gibbs, who had represented Durham for the 2004
season, will start his stint in June, and joins a Lashings squad which
also includes Chris Cairns, VVS Laxman and Phil Tufnell.
Andrew Fitch-Holland, the chief executive of Lashings, told South African
Press Association that the club intended to rope in more big names for the season, making it "the most astonishing Lashings line-up ever". The club plays
mainly 40-over games and a handful of Twenty20 fixtures, and lost only a
couple of matches last season.
Lashings has a history of attracting plenty of stars to play for them - Viv
Richards, Richie Richardson, Alvin Kallicharran and Brian Lara have all
turned up for them in the past. Kallicharran is the current manager of the
team.
