Lancashire's title hopes in the County Championship took a dent when
former England seamer Peter Martin had his thumb broken in fielding
practice before the match against Leicestershire at Grace Road.
The visitors were put on the backfoot in a game they have to win to
keep the pressure on Surrey who lead the table. Leicestershire scored
362 for 7 with stellar contributions from Aftab Habib (93) and Phil
Defreitas (90 batting).
In another match at Derby, both Derbyshire and Durham batted poorly
with the seamers of both teams reaping the rewards. Derbyshire scored
167 with the seventh wicket partnership between Rob Bailey (54) and
skipper Dominic Cork (45) alone producing 81 runs. Simon Brown, Melvyn
Betts and Steve Harmison picked up three wickets each.
In reply, Durham made only 144 with Kevin Dean taking 6 for 52.
Derbyshire batted through one over in the second innings to end
the day at 0 for no loss.
At Canterbury, Hampshire who need a win to avoid being relegated had
restricted Kent to 268 for 9 with wicket keeper Paul Nixon (92 no) and
Matthew Walker (47) being the chief contributors while Alan Mullally
took 5 for 67.
In a Division Two match, Glamorgan openers pounded the Sussex attack
to make a record stand of 374. Steve James (193 not out) and Matthew
Elliott (177) both hit big hundreds while Michael Powell made an
unbeaten 48 as the score mounted to 457 for one at the end of the first
day.
