Neil McKenzie and Hashim Amla added 143 for the fifth wicket to spare South Africa A's blushes on the third day of their four-day match at Bulawayo, but Zimbabwe A still emerged with credit after a spirited performance.
They even enjoyed the bragging rights of a first-innings lead, thanks to Dion Ebrahim's unbeaten 97. He eventually ran out of partners with a century there for the taking, but his efforts had secured Zimbabwe a slender six-run lead.
In reply, Mluleki Nkala and Doug Hondo were quickly up to speed as South Africa slipped to 64 for 3, before Tinashe Panyangara removed the captain, Ashwell Prince, for 5. Panyangara later returned to dismiss Amla for 74, but by South Africa were into their stride.
McKenzie will be instrumental in tomorrow's morning session. Quick runs from him, or an early breakthrough for Zimbabwe, and this game is still there for the taking.
