At Christchurch, December 17

15-Apr-1997
At Christchurch, December 17. New Zealand won by one wicket. Toss: Pakistan.
A thrilling climax saw New Zealand win with one ball to spare. Their pursuit of 233 had reached a healthy 204 for four when Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis struck five deadly blows - Waqar picked up three wickets in an over. Morrison joined Larsen at 221 for nine, with 12 still needed, but a couple of no-balls in Wasim's final over helped Larsen see his team through. Pakistan's innings had been dominated by a blistering 80, in 95 balls, from Inzamam-ul-Haq. With Salim Malik, he put on 114 for the fourth wicket. But Morrison took four wickets in the closing stages, helping him to five for 46, his best analysis in limited-overs internationals, including his 100th wicket at this level.
Man of the Match: Inzamam-ul-Haq.
