LAHORE, 4: "Pakistan cricket team's tour of India will be finalised
after a meeting of the representatives of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka
and Bangladesh to be held soon had discussed the holding of the Asia
Cup of one-day matches and the inaugural Asia Cup of Test matches".
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Khalid Mahmood told mediamen at
the Qadhafi Stadium on Friday that the Board of Control for Cricket
in India (BCCI) wanted to hold Tests of the first Asia Cup during
Pakistan's tour. But that could be done only after the four countries
had arrived at some decision about the Asia Test Cup competition.
The Asia Cup of limited-over matches was scheduled to be organised in
1999.
While replying to a question, Khalid Mahmood said that the BCCI had
proposed venues of the Tests and the one-day international matches to
be played by the Pakistan team and the PCB was closely studying them,
keeping in view the security and other problems.
"Threat by some political elements in India about disrupting some
matches of Pakistan team's tour cannot be overlooked by the PCB and
the Pakistan government", said Khalid Mahmood while replying to
another question.
Pakistan team is scheduled to begin its tour of India from the third
week of January to play three Tests and five one-day international
matches. The chances are that the tour will go ahead as planned if no
unforeseen development took place.
