PAKISTAN v SRI LANKA

Toss: Pakistan

15-Apr-1997
Toss: Pakistan. International debut: Salim Elahi.
Nineteen-year-old Salim Elahi, brother of the Test player Manzoor, had a sensational debut, winning the game with an unbeaten 102. Only three other players - Dennis Amiss, Desmond Haynes and Andy Flower - had scored a century in their first limited-overs international. And, astonishingly, Elahi had never even appeared in a first-class match. He reached three figures with a straight six off Wickremasinghe and also hit seven fours in 134 balls. He put on 156 in 34 overs with Aamir Sohail, then 78 in ten with Ramiz Raja, to complete victory with six overs to spare. Earlier, Sri Lanka were put in and looked vulnerable at 48 for three. But Ranatunga joined Gurusinha to rescue the innings with a stand of 137. Ranatunga scored 102 not out - the same as Elahi, though slightly quicker, hitting ten fours in 114 balls.
Man of the Match: Salim Elahi.
