Lawrence Prittipaul made an unbeaten 149 in his third championship appearance, and his Southampton debut, for Hampshire against Derbyshire. Prittipaul, 20, shared in a stand of 248 for the fourth wicket with Will Kendall.
Hampshire struggled early on, losing openers Giles White and Jason Laney for just 21 runs. Smith and Kendall then took the score to 107 before Smith was caught off Matthew Cassar. But then Kendall was joined by Prittipaul and Hampshire set about a weakened Derbyshire attack without skipper Dominic Cork.
Kendall completed his third century of the season without giving a chance, and in doing so reached 1,000 for the season. Kendall batted for five hours before he attempted to sweep spin bowler Simon Lacey and gloved catch to slip.
Prittipaul took two and a half hours to reach his maiden century, and a hundred of his runs came in boundaries. Only three Hampshire batsmen have scored centuries on their home debuts and the last was Richard Hayward in 1982.
At the close, after two rain interruptions, Hampshire were a prosperous 368 for four. Prittipaul, a product of the club's youth system, had batted for 227 minutes and faced 212 balls. Adrian Aymes was unbeaten with two as Hampshire completed their recovery from a shaky start.
