South Africa v Australia, 2008-09

Wisden's review of South Africa v Australia, 2ndTwenty20 international, 2008-09

15-Apr-2010
At Centurion, March 29, 2009 (floodlit). South Africa won by 17 runs. Toss: Australia. Twenty20 international debuts: Y. A. Abdulla, R. E. van der Merwe; B. Laughlin.
Roelof van der Merwe is about as subtle as a blacksmith shaping a crowbar, and bats with a very similar action. His "hit every ball for six" approach earned him 48 from 30 balls on debut in front of his home crowd - with four sixes, one of which was aimed at cow corner but actually flew over backward point. South Africa's 156 was competitive but not intimidating, although their other debutant, Dolphins left-arm seamer Yusuf Abdulla, quickly made it more daunting with the early wicket of Ponting in a clever spell with the new ball. But it was Botha who really strangled the tourists out of the game, conceding only 16 runs in his four overs. Ben Laughlin, Australia's debutant, is the son of Trevor, who played three Tests and six one-day internationals in the late 1970s.
Man of the Match: R. E. van der Merwe.
