Who will ultimately become the coach of India? If all the newspapers
in Calcutta are to be believed, the former New Zealand opener John
Wright has the brightest chance. Every day, newspapers in the city,
have been publishing reports quoting various sources that John Wright
will ultimately take over responsibility from the ICC Knock-out Trophy
at Nairobi starting October 3.
Papers have also quoted that even Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid have
been discussing the issue with Wright in England. Wright incidentally
is also the coach of Kent for which Dravid is turning out this season.
However, most of the reports have also indicated that Roger Binny will
be in charge of the conditioning camp prior to the tournament. The
camp is slated to begin on September 15 in Chennai.
A vernacular daily in Calcutta has also stated that the BCCI Secretary
Jaywant Lele is surprised the recent comments made by the Indian
captain Sourav Ganguly. The latter had given an interview to a Bengali
newspaper in Calcutta stating that he preferred to have Javagal Srinath
in the team for the forthcoming tournament in Kenya. Ganguly has also
said that he would definitely talk to the selectors and the board
secretary regarding the inclusion of Srinath.
Reacting to this statement, Lele has said, "How can Ganguly say that
he needs a particular type of cricketer without participating in the
conditioning camp?" and added" He should first have a look at the
talent that is available. Moreover he should have informed me first
about his requirements." However, Lele has also added that once
Ganguly attends the camp, he will definitely talk with him on the
Srinath issue.
