During a Test series already fraught with controversy (read: the stairwell saga, Lyon's ball drop, the Rabada ban and its reversal), another massive issue broke out in Cape Town: ball tampering. Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera seemingly working on the ball with a foreign substance in his hand, only for Australia captain Steven Smith to come out at the end of the day and accept that it was something planned by the team's on-field leadership group.
