van Jaarsveld and de Villiers were relentless in their onslaught, stroking 40 fours and two sixes between them. Both went past 150, and van Jaarsveld was still at the crease on 159 when the day ended - de Villiers edged Paul Adams to Thami Tsolekile, the wicketkeeper, for 151. de Villiers, rumoured to be the next South African wicketkeeper, did his cause no harm.

The pitch at Goodyear Park in Bloemfontein had the bowlers smiling as Garnett Kruger bowled the Eagles into submission, taking 5 for 43, at one stage having figures of 3 for 0. Loots Bosman (45), batting in the middle order, put up some resistance as the Eagles were bowled out for 148. Then it was the turn of Deon Kruis (4 for 27) to strike, leaving the Lions struggling on 87 for 6 with Neil McKenzie on 30 when bad light ended play a few overs early.

In trouble on 113 for 5, Jacobs and Robin Peterson put on 156 for the sixth wicket as the Dolphins lost their grip on the game. A further late wicket gave Lance Klusener three in the innings, while Russell Symcox, son of Pat, assisted with two of his own. At the close Jacobs had moved to 135.
