Gilchrist and Katich put on 191 in 32 overs to send Sri Lanka plummeting again. Jayasuriya,
back from injury, was quickly snaffled by Lee, and the remainder of the innings was again restricted
by Australian pressure and Sri Lankan hesitance. Jayawardene and Arnold added 121 for the fourth
wicket, but 233 was not enough, given the fast WACA outfield. Scoring at six an over, the Australian
openers made their target look embarrassingly slight. Katich hit his highest one-day score and
Gilchrist a satisfying century containing four sixes. Sri Lanka saved some face by denying Australia
a bonus point that had seemed theirs for the taking. Eighteen-year-old Chamara Kapugedera hit
a brisk 22 on debut.
