Forty coaches attended an excellent practical fitness session at the Sports Science Institute on Monday night.
A good mixture of club and youth coaches watched as resident Biokenetisist, Grant Compton, put the WP u17 cricketers through a cricket-specific strength and endurance workout. Taking the form of a lecture /demonstration, Grant took the coaches and players through the warm up, a twelve-station fitness circuit, aerobic sprints and a cool down. Strength training and stabilization are vital components in a coaches' injury prevention programme when preparing the players for the season. Despite the difficulty of finding dry practice conditions, the coach must encourage the players to put in solid time on physical preparation. Further details on fitness can be obtained by e-mail from:

The next Coaches Association meeting will be on: Monday 02 October 2000 at Newlands (19h00). The main area for discussion will be the revised Laws which will be applicable for the coming season. All welcome.
Two important seminars are programmed for this month:
Wednesday 20/09/00 Advanced Coaches Seminar. (09h00 - 15h00) Level 2/3 coaches are welcome to register. A full programme to prepare coaches for the coming season.
Wednesday 27/09/00 - Novice Coaching Seminar (09h00 - 12h30)
This is geared at the previously unqualified coach, who hopes to unravel some of the mysteries of cricket coaching.
Registration is essential for both of the above. This can be done by phoning me at the WPCA offices: 683 6420 ext 215 of by faxing: 683 5407. Best wishes to all teams and coaches for the forthcoming season. PAUL PHILLIPSON (Coaching Manager)
