Thanks to the near-heroics of joint top-scorer Ravi Rampaul, West Indies came close to an improbable victory in the 2nd ODI. Nevertheless South Africa prevailed again, and Brian Lara's men go into the third ODI needing a win to stay in the five-match series.
The next match takes place at Durban. The last time South Africa played at the ground was that remarkable rain-affected tie against Sri Lanka in the 2003 World Cup. A big stand during the middle overs between Marvan Attapattu and Aravinda de Silva allowed Sri Lanka to post a hefty total of 268 for 9, while Herschelle Gibbs top-scored for the South Africans.
Gibbs is 7/2 to be South Africa's top scorer this time, and, although he is not in the greatest of form, Gibbs is always an attractive prospect. Jacques Kallis, meanwhile, is 11/4 to continue his fine run and top the South African scoring. Jacques Rudolph is looking an increasingly convincing cog in the South African machine, and he is 6/1 - the longest odds of the established batsmen. Romantics may fancy a flutter on Lance Klusener, but his 14/1 odds are not long enough to tempt punters.
For West Indies, the last match provided the unlikely combination of Rampaul and Dwayne Smith as top scorers. Rampaul remains a rank outsider for this game -he is 66/1 to top-score for the West Indies, while Smith is perhaps a better outside bet - he comes in to 7/1. Favourite in this market is the out-of-sorts Lara, who must come good at some stage. Those who remember his back-to-the-wall efforts against Australia in 1998-99 in an apparently lost cause will not be surprised that Lara remains 9/4 favourite in this market.
