However, that is all you can say about the way the number five seed performed in his opening game, after he made heavy weather of beating his Spaniard opponent.

It should be plain sailing through to the quarter-finals for the top seed now. Unseeded Daniela Hantuchova became the first player to reach the third round after walking over against her scheduled second round opponent. Hantuchova, a quarter finalist two years ago, looks to be carrying forward her good form from Eastbourne last week, and could pose the main threat to the dominance of the William's sisters.
