India v Zimbabwe

Wisden's review of the 39th match, India v Zimbabwe

15-Apr-2016
At Auckland, March 14, 2015 (day/night). India won by six wickets. Toss: India.
Taylor played the best 50-over innings of his career in his last match for Zimbabwe before committing himself to Nottinghamshire - but it was not enough to prevent India from completing their sixth win out of six. Reduced to 33 for three after being put in, Zimbabwe understood the value of keeping wickets in hand, as Taylor and Williams rebuilt with care in a stand of 93. Taylor then added 109 with Ervine, and timed his acceleration perfectly. His first 50, full of impudent reverse sweeps, came off 64 balls, his second off 35; off his next ten he thumped 37, finishing with five sixes and 15 fours. His eighth one-day international hundred made him the first Zimbabwean to score two in a row at a World Cup. India's three seamers shared nine wickets, though Ashwin and Jadeja, their two spinners, managed only one for 146. And now their batsmen needed a tricky 288. That looked even trickier when Panyangara removed both openers with 21 on the board, which soon became 92 for four. But Zimbabwe brought their part-time spinners on at the wrong time, allowing Raina and Dhoni a measure of the conditions. Raina was dropped by Masakadza at short fine leg on 47, and went on to a 104-ball 110, adding an increasingly fluent unbroken 196 with his captain. Dhoni had been in control from the moment he arrived, and finished with 85 from 76 balls, extending India's World Cup winning streak to ten. ANAND VASU
